With the exception of a few small dances and a shooting match, the holi days passed off very quietly at our end of Applegate. I do not think the mercury was low er than zero, but it hardened potatoes, apples, ic., considerably, but the dam age was slight. How depraved and low must those persons have been who did, on the night of Jan. 3d, enter and steal from Henry York eight pieces of bacon, and on the same night also took some out of J. Sissel's smoke house? A good plan for those persons that go out sleighing here on Applegate, is to take a wagon along, for the wrecks, and sleighs scattered along tho road will convince even a casual observer that all the sleighing was not a success. I did think I would have a marriage notice to send, but could not procure the needed information. That fellow from New York who put an ash poul tice on his neck for a cold now holds his head in a set position it did too much. Here is the way a man latelv from Iowa now on ague snd fever. Applegate, cured the He took at one dose seventy small pebbles, then stood on his head, and strange as it may appear, the ague left him. I suppose the phi losophy of the cure is "that hr must have sand in the craw." I do not think standing on the head will become universal. The storm of wind on the 9th in stant vas the severest that has ever visited this country. Large trees were torn up by the roots, others snapped off like weeds, while the fences that were blown down astonished the na tives. No stock was killed that I can hear of. Mr. Harriott says that so far this Winter has been a great deal hftrrlpr t.hnn thn nnpt nf Ififi vmiey by tne Ju, ana mucn v,: .... last snow still on hand. As to the weath er being pleasant, is saying a good deal, but still wo have concluded to take it just as it comes. Stock looks well and as far as I can learn but little perished in the big storm, except that Messrs. A". Wimer and Clemens lost about two hundred sheep, but perhaps many of them will yet be found alive. A good many buildings could not stand the pressure, but no great damage done, and although the snow went off in a hurry, Applegate behaved quite well, not get ting out of its channel. The snow taught many people a great lesson, and if heeded, much suffering among stock will he avoided; that they should be prepared for a hard Winter, whether it comes or not, for where is the sense or the humanity in keeping more stock than what feed is prepared for. A few head wall kept are worth legions of half-starved stock. Mac. ANNEXATION OF MEXICO. The San Francisco "Chronicle" has a special from Mew York dated Jan. 8th, indulging in the following specula tions concerning the "manifest destiny" of several of the provinces of Mexico. Let us have "piece," stop intestine rev olution, and give the Mexicans the benefit of a gool government : There has been considerable talk at the Manhattan and Union Clubs with in a few days about a formidable fili buster movement, having for its object the severance of the Kio Grande States of Mexico from that republic, and placing them as speedily as possible un der an independent government styled the Republic of the Rio Grande. News received from there yesterday, appparently confirming this gossip, cre ated lively interest. A "Sun" corres pondent this morning says there has existed for some years a secret organi zation, having its ulterior object the absorption of Mexico by tho United States. The manner in which this is to be effected is the old one, the grad ual settlement of adventurers into the Northern States of Mexico, Chihuahua, Sonora, Coahuila, Nuvea Leon and Tamaulipos. Grant, while President, entered into the plot privately, and fa vored a part of the programme. The Nicaragua canal is .but the hem ming in of Mexico's defensive powers on the South concurrent with ostensibly peaceful and industrial movements on the North. The Tehauntepec Railway, now being constructed by Mr. Learned, has nothing to do with the Grant scheme. GITAYMAS AS X RIVAL. It is said, and with much plausibility, that the wealthy Bostonians who have secured control of the Atchison, Tope ka and Santa Fe Railway, and with it whatevpr is valuable in the franchiso and land grant of the old Atlantic and Pacific, intend, after constructing their line down the Rio Grande to El Paso, to push southwestward to Guaymas. A careful study of the map fayors ft strong suspicion of this intention. It would bring them in connection at El Paso with the Texas Pacific, and tho two companies, then combining, as would be clearly to their interest, would have the shortest possible route, from the waters of the Pacific to Gal- veston and New Orleans and with tho whole railway system of Texas and the Southern States. The distanco from El Paso to Guaymas is just about half the distance from El Paso to San Diego. Moreover, it would place Guaymas 200 or 250 miles in closer communication with St. Louis than San Francisco is by the Salt Lake and Omaha route. The port of Guaymas is a good one for commerce. The region between it and El Paso is believed to be very rich in minerals. It has a fine agricultural feeding in the direction of the Yaqui Valley and Hermossilo, in Sonora, and with this railway communication to tho Southern and Southwestern States, backed by the unlimited capital of Boston, it would bid high both for tho trade San Francisco now has with the Mexican and Central American coast and with the constantly increasing trade of Australia and China. This Mexican coast trade is as yet in its in fancy. The valley of Colima, which is soon to be connected with Manzanillo, by railway, has immense resources for the production of coffee and other trop ical products; and if Guaymas secures what she expects from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Company, it is a sorjoiBfcestioriiyith San Tniruufia slice ouc of our trade, and leave us wondering what had hurt us, andhow so large, rich and great a city as this managed to bo humiliated by so insig nificant a town. Tho tea trade with China and Japan we shall possibly al ways keep. But suppose Mexico should make as high a bid for Chinese labor ers as Cuba and Peru have made, would it not soon happen that Boston lines of steamships would ply weekly between Hongkong and Guaymas, at first carrying laborers chiefly, but by and by taking away our commerce with China altogether! One thing seems inevitable: That, if the connection by rail shall be mods between the Mexican port and tho Texas railway system, the Central and Couthern Pacific Companies will have to inaugurate a far more liberal policy toward this State and tho merchants of this city, or lose a large part of the traffic upon which they are depending for future dividends. They are get ting into deeper water than they have been used to, whether they know it or not. San Fran. "Chronicle." The following touching story is told by a truthful exchange: A man in a certain town who had never advertised was recently found dead under the counter, where he had been lyinij for two days. He was accidentally discov ered by a small boy who went in to get a nickel changed. As he never ad vertised people had forgotten where his store was, and hence no one happened to discover the corpse until decomposi tion had set in. Surgery can justly boast of a new conquest; when an eye is severely wounded, the healthy one is in danger of being impaired by "sympathy," to preserve the good eye, it was hitherto the practice to remove the injured one. Dr. Boucheron has discovered, that by cutting the ciliary nerves, the "sympa thy" is stopped, and thus dispenses with the necessity of removing the in jured organ. Forty surgeons havo thus operated successfully. "Pacifio Rural Press." If your local paper happens to tread on your toes a little in performing its mission, don't get your back up and abuso its editor, but stop and take a good breath and think bock for a season, and see if you can't remember some of tbe favors and kindnesses it has shown you in the past. Then reflect that it may not be long before you may want favors again. Ex.
