KESLUrS POrULAK XO.VTHLX The January number commencing a new volume- of this very excellent magazine is an nnusvally attractive one in its literary and artistic departments. A: new serial story of deep interest, en titled "Not Guilty," by Etta W. Pierce, is begun, and those who read the open ing chapters will scarcely fail to follow the story to the end. The leading ar ticle, "Icebergs, and Dangers Encoun tered at Sea," by Capt. Barret, of the IT. S. Navy, is replete with informa tion and exceedingly interesting. "The Negro Exodus from the Gulf States," by Fred Douglass." "Dwelling House Reform," by Geo. J. Hagar; an article on "Do Tallyrand," and one on "Teeth" by Dr. Wilson, will not fail to attract considerable notice. The department of fiction is very attractive, the stories are by some of the most popular wri ters, and one by N. Robinson, telling "How Mr. Nobbles took his brido and mother-in-law to Niagara Falls," with its comic illustrations, everybody who can appreciate genuine humor will en joy. There are poems by Nellie C. Hastings", Rev. M. G. Watkinds, A. A. Watts, etc; some admirable sketches, and an abundant miscellany embracing a variety of subjects. Notes of travel, fun, science, eta, etc. There are 128 quarto pages, with about 100 illustra tions, together with a beautiful colored frontispiece, entitled "Maternal Solici tude." Those of our readers who de sire pleasant and instructive reading should subscribe to Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly for the new year. The annual subscription is 3; single copies, 25 cents, postpaid. Address, Frank Leslie's Publishing House, 53, 55 and 57 Park Place, New York. The daily circulation of the most popular newspapers in the City of with a population of 200,000 newspapers in the Republic agirjegate a consumption of about 800 reams a month, a quantity that many single mills inihe.United States could easily supply and yet not run one-fourth of the time. Switzerland is having hurricanes, earthquakes, and snowstorms of un usual violence. Ireland, Spain, Portu gal, France and Italy have been having fearful rains' aud inundations. These visitations, together with extremely hard times, ought to encourage emigra tion. Common school education with com mon sense, is better than a college ed ucation without it OLD AND RELIABLE.
