DOWN TIIE COLL'MBIA.
We have informally heard from Now
York that negotiations were pending,
and nearly concluded, between the Ore
gon Navigation and Railway Company
and the Northern. Pacific Company, for
the construction in joint account of
a standard gauge railroad dowu tho
Columbia river on the South side from
Wallula to The Dalles the road
eventually to be extended to Portland.
The plan substantially agTCfd on..Is--satd
to De to build under the Northern
Pacific's charter, to use the Northern
Pacific's land grant, each company to
own the right to half of the use1 of tun
road the Northern Pacific to issue its
bonds in aid of construction, the Ore
gon company to pay the entire interest
on those bonds for two or three years,
and after that both companies to pay
the interest equally, in the meantime
the Oregon company to have entire uso
of the road; the rails to be steel and
6JS pounds, the Northern Pacific to
build from the mouth of Snake down
to Wallula where the new road begins,
and, after the expiration of the two or
three years' term mentioned, both com
panies to operate the road and share its
profits equally. A division of the bus
iness coming from territory nearly com
mon to the two, is said to have been
agreed on.
But it is distinctly understood by the
representatives of the Oregon Naviga
tion k Railway Company that the
Northern Pacific will not vary or delay
its purpose to push its main line across
the Cascade mountains from the mouth
of the Snake or thereabouts, straight
to its terminus and seaport on Puget
Sound, Tacoma, and the public con so
understand it.
The work for this Columbia river
division of the Northern Pacific Rood
will commence immediately. The iron
and locomotives have been ordered.

Thus far stock have have not fared
as poorly as might have been anticipat

to-day; the foot-log had ice on it.
We shall probably have a foot shak

no Providential hindrance.
We have ten violinists on Big Butte,
and not a very good place for "cat

The next time we sleigh ride wo

Eggs are fifty cents apiece on Big

there were, perhaps the price would
not be quite so high.
While hunting deer a few days ago a
gentleman got lost, and was found sit

Most of our stock men are pretty
well "heeled" for hay.
Hearing that liquor was good for
snako bite, one of our fellows wended
his course straightway to Jacksonville,
and laid in a supply a few days before
Christmas, and while returning he
froze his heels and thought they were
snake bitten, and gulped down his
whole supply of antidote, before he
got home. His wife thought the story

Protection of Mineral Lands.
The Secretary of the Interior has ren
dered a decision that whenever, prior
to patenting, it is discovered that land
pieviously offered and entered as ogri
cultural is really mineral in its charac
ter, die entry must be cancelled and
the land reserved for entry under the
laws especially applicable to mining
lands. The issue was presented by
the case of Smith Scoggin vs. Culver
et al., involving a tract of 2,000 acres
of land in Camden (Arkansas) distnc
which was purchased by the Uova
ment on private entry in Apnl,
but was subsequently found to
