Never witness a tear with apathy or indifference. Words, looks, actions, may bo artificial; but a tear is equiv ocal; it conies direct framt the hear, and speaks at once the language of truth, nature and sincerity. Straw is worth money on the farm, first for bedding animals, second for throwing into the feeaing r3 barn yards, and third, if there lie surplus, forrotting where it may happen to lie. All this of course with reference to its ultimate value as manure. Yet a large class of farmers in the West, yearly burn vast quantities of straw, thus re ducing it simply to its inorganic ele ments. A child's logic is not to he sneezed at His mind is keen enough to see the folly of much of the reasoning of his seniors. A little fellow in Connec ticut asked his parents to take him to church with them. They said ho roust wait until he was older. "Wei., was tho shrewd suggestion in response, i'you'd better take me now, for when 1 1 get bigger I may not want to go." The Northern Pacific Bail Road is crawling slowly across the continent one mile of road being built daily. There are already thirty-four settle ments upon the 3ine, and the line and the sale of Government lands last year amounted to over 2,000,000 acres. The snorting and never tired steam horse will reach the Yellowstone in the course of the next two years. What a revolution steam horses makei And how long before there &iH arise a hum bug anti-railroad party! Tho Stewart grave robbers evidently thought they had got bold of a bonan za, and $2,500,000 was the first price demanded for the return of the body. From this princely figure th down step by step to 200,000. Hilton, it is said, shows no inclinaticn to pay more than 25,000, and even then will promise no immunity to the criminals. The robbers have tried in over way to bring him to terms, but while he is willing to pay the sum off ered for the body he will not compound the felony. Every man of sense and refinement admires a woman as a woman, a thous and things that in their appropriate sphere would be admired become dis gusting and offensive. The appropri ate character of a woman demands delicacy of appearance and manners refinement of sentiment, gentleness of -peecb, modesty in feeling and action, a bhrinking from notoriety and public gaze, aversion to all that is coarse and rude, and an instinctive abhorrence to all that tends to indelicacy and impu rity, either in principle or action. These are the traits which are admired and sought for in s. woman. The mere lapse of years is not life. To at and drink and sleep to bo ex posed to darkness and to light to pace around in the mill of habit and turn thought into an implement of trade, this is not life. In all this but a poor fraction of the consciousness of human ity is awakened, and the sanctities still slumber which make it worth while to be. Knowledge, truth, love, beauty, faith, alone can give vitality to the mechanism of existence. The laugh of mirth vibrates through the heart - tho tears that freshen the dry wastes within, the music thai brings childhood back, the prayer that calls the future near, the doubt that makes us meditate the death that startles us with mys tery, the hardship that forced us to struggle, the anxiety that ends in trust, are the true nourishments cf our nat ural being. Robert G. Ingersoll pays this trihnte to his dead friend: "Upon the grave of the Rev, Alexander Clark I wish to place one flower. Utterly cold of dogmatic pride that often passes for the love of God, without the arrogance of the elect simple, free and kind thi.) earnest man made me his friend by huipg mine. I forgot that ho was a Chribtian, and he seemed to forget that I was not, while each remembered that the other was a man. While this good man vas living his brethren jikmed him "for .having treated me 'with iaimcsB, Hut I trust, now that jbe has left the shore touched by the myjtfsioua-seev.thftt never ypthas borne oSanyrwawnlhej imagine of home- "AamL8Limt crime will be fsreiven Ly thotse-who still remain to tesfeh the the lore of God." -AND NORMAL.
