The following extract from the Oko
lona States gives evidence of the feej.
ing that exists in the South. The ex
tract is published as it appears in tho
"States:"
So, if'we-sr: to haheve a B&dical,
high in Radical ronfirJence: Mio sinrm

1880, and tho rope -will be jerked fay

ple out of their P, 'sident in 1876-7.

They must meet and make ready in

The States must fortify themselves
by re-organizing and re-equiping the
Militia.
The South must be transformed in
to one mighty military camp, if neces
sary to protect our institutions and
preserve our inheritance.
Unify! Organize! PREPARE!
If Grant and his people want war
let them have war.
"We of the South have a million of
friends and allies in the North who
will be musket bearers in the Army
of American Liberty, and help to deal

Our boys will give another yank at
the underpinning of the amendments
when they go back to "Washington in
October.
The safest way to avoid war is to be
prepared for it, and evidence to the
world a spirit and determination to
meet it like bravo men and true patri
ots. Down with the flag! and down with
the Union! unless we can restore the
Republic to its grand old perfection
by making that flag a symbol of sov
erign commonwealths and that Un
ion a Government for "White Men and
VhiteMen onlv.
Among the humors of the late Paris
Exjiositions are the errors committed
in the awards of diplomas to a num
ber of American exhibitors, growing
out of the unfamiliarity of the Com
misMon of Awards with the American
vernacular. The diploma intended
for the Providence Tool Company, is
adressed to the Providence Fool Com
pany; that for the Gardner Gun Corn
Company is granted for a Fusil pour la
Jardinere, or a Gun fora Gardener;
for that of the Wamshutta Mill, is
granted to Mons "Wasbmutta. The
Waterbury Button Company receives
diploma in the name Waterbury, But
ton Si Company, The parties interes
ted express great disappointment, es
pecially the "Providence Fool Com
pany," who are anxious for a revision
of the award in so far as the designa
tion is concerned, as they are hardly
willing to make pub'ic exhibition of
their laurels under any Buch colors as
those indicated.
Ireland is about the size of Maine.
France is more than twice as large as
England, Wales and Scotland together.
Texas is thirty-five times as large as
Massachusetts, or as large as Maine,
New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachu
setts Rhode Island, Connecticut, New
York, New Jersey, Pennyslvania,
Delaware, Maryland, Ohio and Indi
ana combined. The entire population
of the United States could be provided
for in the State of Texas, allowing each
man, woman and child four acres of
land.
After the exposure of Tilden's tale
telling cipher dispatches in connection
with tho returns in 1876, is it not an
insult to the people's sense of honesty
ami decency to even mention Samuel
J. Tilden as a candidate for president
of the United States in 1880? Tho
very fact that many of the Democrat
ic leaders are seriously proposing this
thing, is proof of their utter sharneless
ness and destitution of principle..
Home at Wioht, It is night now
and here is home. Gathered under
the quiet roof elders and children lie
alike at rest. In the midst of a great
calm the stars look out from the hear
ens. The silence peopled with the
post the sorrowful remorse for sin
and shortcomings, and memories of
passionate joys and griefs rise out of
their grares, both now alike calm and
sad, Eye, as'snut mfne-hijIfSV";
that have long since ceased to shine,
The town and the fair landscape sleep
under the starlight wreathed under the
Autumn mists. Twinkling among
the houses a light keeps watch htre
and there, in what may be a aiok
chamber or two. The clock tolls
sweetly on the silent air. Here is ,
night and rest. An awful sense of
thanks make the heart swell and tho .
head bow as I pass to my morn
through the sleeping house, and feel as
though a hushed blessing were upoij
it.
A Noteworthy Contrast. In the
last year of Democratic administration,
under James Buchannan as President,
there were borrowed $4,840,000 on
one year treasury notes, which bore
interest at the rate of twelve per cent,
per annum. The same administration
sold 818,415,000, twenty year six per
cent bonds, at 89. 10-100 per cent.
These bonds mature in 1881, and will
be paid in full by a Republican admin
istration, in honest money. Although
they have less than two years to run,
such is the confidence in the credit of
the Government, they are now selling
at 10 J, while 6's having ten years to
run, are worth "one hundred and twen,
ty-one. The Buchannan Democrats
who played the government out, now
that it is saved and restored under Re-
popublican management, ask to be pcr
rruttcd tn tntipnJLml again.
Honor the dear old mother. Time
has scattered tho snowy flakes on hejr
brow, ploughed deep furrows on her
cheek, but she is not sweet and beau
tiful now The lips are thin and shrun
ken, but those are the lips that have
kissed many a hot tear from the child
ish cheeks, and they are the sweetest
lips in the world. The eye is dim, yet
it glows with soft radiance of holy lov
which can never fads. The sands of
her life are nearly run out, but feebli
as she is, she will go further and reach
down lower than any other on earth,
You cannot walk into a midnight
where she cannot see you; you cannot
enter a prison whose bars will keop
her out; you can newr mount a scaf
fold too high for her to reach that she
may kiss and bless you in evidence of
her deathless love. When the world
shall despise and all forsake you; when
it leaves you by the wayside to die unr
noticed, the dear old mother will gath
er you in her feeble arms and carry
you home, and tell you all of your
virtues until you almost forget that
your soul is disfigured by vices. Love
her tenderly, nnd cheer her declining
years with holy devotion.
The New York "Tribune" say that
5,000 fools assembled at Njiagara on the
Fourth to see another fool jump into
the river. Fourteen hundred peoplo
jump into the river. Fourteen hun
dred peoplo went from Detroit on that,
day, but none of them went to see the
man jump. Thirteen hundred and
ninety-eight were gazing at tie beau
ties of the falls and the other two were
taking lunch at a hotel. The 5,000
fools alluded to by the "Tribune" came
from New York and Canada. Th
acrobatic fool was not such a fool as
he looked, for he did not jump, and
thus he fooled the "Tribune" man and
his 4,999 comrades.
The country is full of idle capital
and idle men. One fears and hates the
other. One takes no chances, aud tho
other had rather tramp than work.
The conflict between capital and labor
is not so general or so uncompromis.
ing as the outside world is led to suji
pose. It isccmiine.d on the one side to
the usurious, who will risk a dollar
only when he is confident it will-double
