Hardly any State in the Onion has advanced and is advancing so rapidly as Oregon which has many advantages over the other Western States in the quality of the soil, the number, of its navigable rivers, and Uwcl itspopulatjoul ciirauaraao princn&S ine iMvaEaaf.t. jsiar i .uousani .i , -Tuswsa .- . " ne- dlirftgaMKn Ix. -n j at up, and fully ten thousand persons hare been added tavthc population. The immi gration there has been extraordinary in that time. Thfi eastern quarter of the State is rapidly settling, and to this fact the Indian war of last Summer Is partially ascribed. A number of rail ways; mainly harrow gunge roads to transport grain to tide water, have been lately built, and a railroad is projected between Astoria and Winnemucca, on the line of the Central Pacific. Every- thing aujurk well for Oregon, upper region of the Columbia The river seems destined to be one of the great granaries of the West. The crops now raised show a remarkable average per acre of superior quality, and have nev er been known to fail. But they ate probably insignificant in point of pro ductiveness compared with what they soon will be. There is a vast area of land of unsurpassed fertility between the Blue 'Mountains in the south and the Spokane river in the north, and not one in fifty acres has yet been cul tivated. The larger portion who have settled in Oregon are from New En gland, directly or indirectly, nnd have carried to their new home all the intel ligence, energy, perseverance, thrift and industry for which they have been noted. Tne Oregonians are very unlike the Californians in their freedom from reckless specula-spirit. They expect to mako money Only by legitimate enter turner lot-tune, as southern neighbors do. The! growth and Jirosperity of Oregon are solid, its present is most encouragim, and its future is full of promise. "N. Y. Times." Ax Incident in a Sleeping Car Between Heading and Wheatland. It was in a sleeping car between here nnd Reading that it happened. Among the passengers were a middle aged cou ple, oh their return from 'Frisco, evi dently on their first journey, and a sour-faced old maid, rather desiccated in her general effect, who was travel ling alone. The couple had an upper berth and the "maiden well stricken in years" the upper berth in the adjoining section. In the same car were a couple of frolicsome youths, ready for any shrt of mischief. Bed time caine and all hands retired. But the husband could not sleep. Whether it was be cause of the motion of the" cars, the noise or the novelty of tho situation, he could ndt tell( but try as he would lie rould not sleep". At length it oc curred to hint that ho was thirsty. The more ho" thought of it the more thirsty he got. So' he called the porter, who brought tho ladder and helped him down. Now, while he was gono for tho vater, one of the boys stepped out of bed and shifted the ladder" so that it rested against the berth in which tho ancient maiden was sleeping, and then returned to his bed to note the result. In a moment or two the husband re turned and crept quietly up the steps, anxious to make as little noise as possi ble, so as not to waken his wife. The occupant of the berth, thus rudely in truded upon, awoke j ith a start and screamed. The husband, supposing it to be his easily frightened wife, tried to reassure her, and said: "It is only mo." "Only you, yo'u old stotmdrel," said the veneiable maiden, "I'll teach j'ou a "lesson," and with that she seized him by the hair of the head and scream ed for help. Then his wife, awakened by the noise; dhcoxered where her hus band was and raised her voice in la mentation; heaping reproaches upon her faithless spouse. Then tho passengers all got up and demanded an explana tion of the commotion and foremo-it among them was the wretch who caused it all. Then the husband covered with confusion and utterly unable to account for what he had done, climbed down from his fierch and slunk away to bed, where lie was soundly lectured for his faithlessness. Tho cause of all the trouble' leaked out, but has not yet reached tho ears of those chiefly afleet cd by it, and tho glances of defiance exchanged between the wife and the old maid when they meet on the street are a study. "Wheatland Recorder." "'"OVaiMBIIBVaMHHBM TUB GUOYtTII br 1MILMD. Si.t years pgo, three years, one year ago knowing ones said "Ashland will never grow any larger. It is already as large a town as the business center-inS'je'ro-will support. There is noth- jiggtj'o KniM up a town here." Strang- ins io ine niace are nuzzieu to at. ipainfains sd thriving nnd I a, town in this narrow littlo hnmrheJ in bv hicli rnr!nntinl UponetthSruuTharrowing ranLljp'" pinched up into a rocky canyon a few miles above. If it wero a mining re gion its source of life would bo appar ent at once, but there aro no mining camps directly tributary to the town. Still Ashland grows, steadi ly and rapidly, and every year brings the addition of hub'tantial business! houses and beautiful homes. Ashland people aro asking themselves: how long will this continue; what is the limit; it it a solid growth! Besides the two brick buildings in the business part of town, which will contain four or live capa cious stores, there will be built thin season at least four lanro dwelling houses one the school boarding houso and likely as many cottages, smaller and less expensive, and yet wo have faith to believe that Ashland will not have1 reached the limit of improvement at the end of this building season. Let us make a cursory analysis of the busi ness of the town, and perhaps its gro'vth will not appear so mysterious, after all. A wco!snfactory, turn"ngotit annually 30,000 worth of goods manufactured from wool grown within a few uiilej of the looms and spindles is no mean factor in the maiutninance of a town; a flouring mill, turning out 1,000,000 pounds of flour, much of which brings cash into the place from abroad, is not to be over'ooked in seeking for tho props of the town, and the trades of a Wiioii people raise and sell thousands' of dollars worth of cattle every year is Worth considering when mercantile resources aro in question. Tho cattle men of Lake couitty do not attempt to raise nil they must eat, and our fer tile valley furnishes what they need. This makes business for Ashlaiid. Tho" Lake country does much for our town in other ways, also, than ond woultt suppose from a casual view of Ihe sub ject. Many of tho owners of the hom ed herds that roam in tho valleys east of the mountains1 spend a part or all of the year in Ashland with their famil ies, n number of them owning comfort able residences here and considering themselves citizens of the town. - No' more attractive a place for a home can bo found than Ashland, and these men who aro making money in Lake county do well to give their families" the advantages and comforts of a res idence here, instead of inflicting upon them the social and domestic privations of a life upon an isolated cattle ranch. We know of three of the prominent cattle owners of Lake county who in tend to come' with their families to Ashland this fall, and who will in all probability bccomepcrmaiitmtresidents. Ashland has an enviable and well' de served reputation as a desirable placo for parents to send or bring their chil dren to be educated, and wo could name several families whoso residence here is owing to this feature alone. The prospects are that the inducement offered to this closs of people will be greatly increased, and consequently that portion of our pop ulation considerable augmented every year from this time. In this partial enumeration of the chief resouices of the town, it will bo that only such enterprises as bring in money front the out.sido territory aro mentioned. Besides these, however, are other kinds of business partially dependent upon them, but also worthy of being counted with the creative and sustaining forces of the town. So it appears that the prosperity of tho" place iS not without foundation, and is likely to continue and to increase with1 the increasing population and the de velopefacnt of Southern Oregon. "Ti dings." A couple of Black River Falls barb ers are anxious to meet each other in battle array for a hair-cutting match,, but cannot agree on tho rules that shall govern the contest. If the match1 conies off, we suggest that a corps of surgeons bo on hand with a stock of court plaster and tin ears for tho vic tims. Neither of the barbers would want to loose aluabletimeby stopping anfl hunting through a pile of hair on the floor for a man's ear. The au thorities should see to it that the rale of hair renewer is forbidden on tho grounds.
