FISHER., OREUO.V, San Francisco, May 10, 1879. Editor Commercial Advocate: Be ing for a few days on a sojourn in your city, I have thought a few words in re lation to Oregon and its resources, eta, would not be amiss to your numerous readers and the emigration coming lo the coast The State of Oregon is im mediately north of California; bounded on the east by Idaho Territory; on the north by the Columbia river and Wash ington Territory; and on the west by the JfacincTJceqn. ana in this area it embraces 95,274 square mjjes of terri tory, befng about 6500,000 acres, with a population of near 200,000 souls. This risingyoung State embraces with in her borders every variety of mineral, agricultural and timber lands, coupled with a productiveness and beauty of scenery unsurpassed in the world. No more rich field for well directed euergy and enterprise with their consequent reward is afforded in the West, either to labor or capital, than is there to be found. The topography of Oregon di vides it naturally into three grand di visions, Eastern, Western and South em Oregon; and these divisions mark their own distinot peculiarities, each different from the other, and no two just alike. Eastern Oregon embraces all that portion of the State lying east of the Cascade range of mountains, and is to-day comparatively a new country, and adapted above any other country in the West to stock raising; it abounds in thousands of acres of the finest graz ing lands, with a climate exceedingly mild for the lattitude. Horses, cattle and sheep do well in this section of the State. I never knew a careful stock man to go into Eastern Oregon with, say .a hundred head of cattle, or sheep, or a f-w good brood mares, to remain five jtrs, but came away rich. It s und must cont'pfor years to be the great stock coBORt Many thouands '"aBiPfc"'-aHv m tav region to J.amas Uity artu Chicago, the great stock markets. This may appear strange, but nevertheless is true. Stock men from the West make their annual visits to these vast stock fields of bunch grass to supply their markets. And truly they porno not in yain. Southern Oregon is the most di versified in its resources of any of these divisions. It embraces all that portion of the State lying South of the Ump qua and Calapooia mountains, .compris ing the Uxnpqua country and the rich and fertile valley of the Rogue river. This part of the State is noted for its mineral resources and .stock raising especially for sheqp together with its vast forests of unexplored timber lands, abounding with the finest water and climate, in the Slate. In fact I know of no country more inviting to the poor man than is afforded in this favored section. An energetic man may here turn lib attention successfully either to mining, sheep raising or lumbering along the coast. The commodious har bors of Coos bay .and Port Orford are situated on the coast of this section of the Statefrom whence come to your lumber yards the finest lumber in the world. The coal interest of this sec tion is very rich. Thousands of tons being annually shipped to this city from Empire City on Coos bay. The agricultnral lauds of the valley of the Rogue river, while they are more limit ed than in the great Willamette valley, of which presently I will speak, are yery rich;" being peculiarly adapted to rye, barley, oats, potatoes, and fruits of all description, with a climate un rivalled. Could there be a country more inviting for the weary emigrant seeking a home I come now to Wes tern 'Oregon, which comprises the fa mous Willamette valley and its tribu taries. I am conscious that my powers are inadequate to describe this vast ag ricultural garden. This term is used in no exaggerated sense. The richness and beauty of the Willamette valley simply beggars description. It embra ces the whole of Western Oregon, and, as an agricultural and fruit .country, has .no superior Hn the world, with a climate unsurpassed The cereals grow in this section of the State to a perfec tion that is surprising yielding from 40 to .60 Jbusjiels of wheat to tho acre. while the fruits are superior to .those of .any other .in tho United States. It is not possible to do justice to this part of the State in a single letter. I can only allude to it. The Willamette val ley is capable of sustaining alone from its own virgin richness a population of five millions of jieonle, and .never feel tho strain; for its bountiful crops aro never falling and never ending. Its population is healthy, thrifty and hap py. This fact alone proves tho truth of the statement that Oregon is tho most favored State in tho Union. Va. rious railroads are projected to connect Oregon with tho Pacific road3 and tha railroads of the Eastern States, not, ble among which are the Oregon and California Railroad, running directjy south from Portland to Rosoljurg n the Umpqua Valley, present terrat ius, a distance cf20aJfcJonchfS the principal towns ii) QregoriTtjj hoped at no distant day it will Lo pushed on to the California line; tha Oregon Central Railroad running from Portland south, forming a junptjoa with the first named road at Junction City in Lane County. This, however, is in courso of construction; tho WL lamotte Valley and Coast Railroad, now being constructed from Corvallfs to fho Yaquina Bay in Benton county, This, it is proper to say, is one of tha most important roads in courso of construe tion jn the State, as it pushes through direct from the centre of the Willam ette Valley to the spa, where ships of the largest tonnage can ride at .anchor. More than 400 milts of sea voyage will be saved by this road. Oregon is sin gularly free from all local disturbance occasioned by a discontented popula. tion, with a taxation so light that ono hardly feels the burdens of Govern ment Its State debt is a mere baga telle that alarms nobody. While its State administration is notably freo from jobs, malfeasanco and corruption. The purity of its administration has ev, er been guarded with care. Its publiq men have been among the ablest in tho West, and to thejr efforts in and out of Congress, the State is not a little in debted to its present thrifty, contented and happy lot Tho most prominent of these are Generals Lane and Nesmith, Senators Grover and Slater, Ex-Sena- drTl ........Til & HBfl wniteaKcr. l give facts for the benefit of my State. Jj: Yineyarijl A CKASIU.NG OF ICEBEBC. Yesterday afternoon tho oldest in, habitant about Salem was heard to .re mark '-"this bea,ts Oregon.." In the foj' ty years that I have lived on this coast I have never seen anything like t&ja before, save on the plains of tho Piatt." About G p. it. a dark cloud came down from tho East preceded with frequent claps, of thunder and an ominous roar, soon the storm burst upon tho vcity. Immense hail stones or sinall icebergs came crashing down like the breaking loose of a glacier oyer the .edge of a precipice, so to spqak, and the Jain poured after "Jloachian" style. For more than thirty jninutcs the storm raged with unabated fury. Rivers of water rushed through the streets; th skylights in all tho buildirjjp in the city were utterly demolished including those in the State Houso on the flat roofs secured no protection against the deluge of water. The Jiail fell to the depth of two inches. Ono frag ment of an iceberg was weighed and found to tip one hundred nd sixty grains, and this was not the largest. Fortunately the storm was not acepm. panied with high winds, (nd it was not general over the valley; apparently con fined to a narrow bel t. Had i t been general it would have-resulted in great injury to the crops. Following jare the Josses and dau. ages: L. S, Bates, picture, frames and machines, S200; S. Friedman, dry goods, 500; R. H.
