ber of the personal friends of Mr. and
Mrs. George Schumpf assembled at

Siiootixo Affray. A rencounter took
place in Portland on the 20th inst. be
tween J. K. Mercer, editor of tho "I5ee''
and A. C. McDonald, editor of the "Tele
gram." Seven shots wero fired, the
former firing four and the latter three.
Macdonald' was wounded in tho abdo
men, and will probably die. A by
stander nomed Lawrence was shot dur
ing the fisht in the trroin, probably fa
tally. The affray grew out of a news
paper controversy. McDonald lived un
til next morning, when he died from the
injuries received, and Mercer is now in
jail on a charge of murder.
