    THE ORE i SENTINEL
JACITBOBlItlEi
"Wednesday, : : : August 7,-1878
The Sentinel.
An improvement in this paper
will soon be made, and in order to
carry this ont, a certain amount of
bulIiouwill.be necessarj to pur
chase the outfit. Only about six
months has expired since wo took
charge of the paper, therefore we
can not request payment on sub
scriptions, as newspaper patrons
generally wait until the expiration
of the year before considering it
due. -To a great number, however,
it is immaterial when they pay,
and to those we would say that at
this time it would prove very acs
ceptable. Wo intend purchasing a
new dress throughout, and will then
also enlarge it to a twenty-eight
column paper. "Wo have also dc
cided on reducing the subscription
price, aud from this date, if paid
for in advance, it will only be 2 50
per year. Those not paying until
the end jof the year will be charged
the old price 3 00. It shall al
ways bo our endeavor to make the
Sentinel a first-cjass local paper,
and we hope our patrons will assist
us in making the contemplated im
provements by coming forward at
once and settling up.
Imperfect Uonutiou Claims
The Eoseburg Independent pub
lishes the following list of Donation
claims, situated in this and Jo
sephine counties, to which titles
have not yet been perfected:
Claiborn Neil, John Penninger,
J. W. Simpson of Jackson county.
James Lytle, of Josephine coun-
ty.
In many of the above cases im
portant proofs are wanting relative
to the donation settlers' residence
on the land, date of marriage, nat
uralization, &c. As eachyear pass
es the required proof becomes more
difficult to obtain, as many of the
early settlers have died and others
have removed from tho county-and"
State. A largfi majority of these
ciarms-Ojivecmingea ownorsnip mia
many of the present claimants are
not aware that their title to tho
land is not perfect.
All information required and
blanks needed to perfect proof will
be furnished by the Register and
Receiver at Iioseburg on applica
tion. Medical College.
From a circular just received we
learn that the Medical Department
of the Willamette University has
been removed from Salem to Port
land, where excellent facilities will
be afforded studefs for chemical
instruction at tho CoiSiJispensa
ry, the several hospital f tho city
and county, and the Insane A-y-lum.
The thirteenth regular course
of lectures will begin on Monday
evening, Dec. 1C, 1878. Tho facul
ty is uow made up of fourteen of
the best physicians in the State.
Address all letters to Dr. 0. I S.
Plummer, Portlaud, who is Dean
of the faculty.
o
'The Mississippi plan of collecting
taxes on drinks differs from the
Moffett system. Books of coupons
are sold by the State Auditor to all
si! quor dealers. When a drink is
.sold, tho consumer receives a coup
on, which entitles him to receive
from the state, in payment of his
taxes, one cent. If two drinks are
to bo paid for, he receives an-orange-colored
coupon good for two
cents. If five drinks, a blue paper
good for five cents. Not only does
the state enjoy an income from the
tax on drinks, but the consumer
.has a reasonable chance of paying
off taxes with coupons.
On tho 5th of last June, Thos. S.
Sherman, son ol the General, sail
ed for England to complete his ar
rangements for entering the priest
hood of the Catholic Church. His
father is not a Catholic and had
-educated his eon with the intention
of his becoming a. lawyer. He was
a graduate of Yale, also of.Qeorge
towu College and the St Louis law
school.
ocuiz" JLand. Decision.
The Secretary of the Interior has
at last decided in favor of the
right of settlers to pre-empt lands
within the a ay grants after the
roads for which such grants were
made shall have been three years
competed. Tho pre-emption price
is 1 25 an aero. And now, says
the S. F. Chronicle, shall come con
fusion worse confounded, andliti a
tion without end.. Tho first point
which the railway companies will
dispute, is the time when their
roads were completed. They say
some time; the law and the Comis-
ionera on the, part ot the Govern
ment, appointed to receive the
roads, say another and an earlier
time. In California the Central
Pacific, for itself, and tho Western
Pacific and the California and Ore
gon branch, will set up that they
have sold all their land-grants in
bulk to an association of their own
creation, representing nobody but
themselves. The legality of this
new finauce and contract dodge
will have to be tested ,in all tho
Courts up to the Supreme Court of
tho United States, and the "whole
power of the railway company will
be brought into play to defeat the
right ofany settler who may have
the impudence to sot up a preemp
tion claim to any part of the for
feited grant. This will require
years of litigation. In the mean
time several millions of acres of
tho best agricultural lands will re
main uncultivated, and measurably
untaxed, and the settlement, im
provement and productive industry
ot the Stite must languish. If the
Supreme Court shall decide that
the 6ale in bulk by tho railway com
pany to the railway company's land
company was a fraud, and not a
benafide transaction,, then all the
purchases from said fraudulent land
company will be null and void, and
every purchaser will have his action
against the laud company for the
money paid, with interest. We
can imagine that a suit of this kind
would produce quite a bicker be
tween the members of tho railway
company and the members of the
land company, and bring to light
some of the moat startling attempt
to swindle both the Government
aud the innocent purchasers of the
land, ever heard of in this or any
other country.
The New York Journal of Com
merce mentions, as a curious evi
dence ot the new combinations
which may crop up in politics, that
the Convention of the National La
bor Greenback part lately in ses
sion in New York State has ap
pointed a Committee to confer with
the New York Chamber ot Com
merce with a view to obtainiug the
support of that influential body for
the State ticket which the Labor
Greenbackers intend to put in the
field at the next election. Ihe
Chamber, instead of repelling the
advances made, seems inclined to
listen with attentive ear, and, m its
bitter disgust at the failure both of
the Republican and Democratic
parties to give an honest Govern
ment, to rather welcome the over
tures of the new organization.
Walla Walla Union: If wo add
to Washington the three counties
in Northern Idaho it will very ma
terially increase the chances of the
admission into the Union of the
state of Washington, with two sen
ators and a voting member of con
gress to assist Oregon in demand
ing the opening of the Columbia, the
improvement of Suake river, the
building of a railroad from the
Columbia through Idaho to the
Central Pacific, and 'the general
promotion of-the iuterests, the pros
perity, the progress of the Pacific
Northwest Then instead of send
ing two delegates to beg congress
for everything wo need, wo will be
in a position to demand our rights
and enforce the demand.

If vour are troubled with nervousness are
disheartened, tired of life, fear death or feel out
of sorts as the saying Is, you may safely con
clude that you have the Dyspepsia or Liver
Complaint. The liver is very apt to become
torpid this season of the year as poions arising
from stagnant water or decaying vegetatijn
are more numerous and are through inhalation
taken into the blood Unless the liver is strong
and active, and furnishes a supply of fresh and
pure blood to drive out the impurities, the
above mentioned symptoms surely follow, and
if not heeded, end in more terrible diseases nnrf
death. White's Prairie Flower Droves itself
the ureat Liver Panacea. Its action on the
liver is different from any medicine ever com
pounded Its cures are truly wonderful. Try
it. Price twenty-five ce its and seventy-five
