Notice is hereby (riven that a .Kepublican
convention will be held ot the Court House
in Kerbyville on Saturday the 11th day of
May, 1878, at 10 o'clock AS M. for the pur
pose ol nominating candidates to be voted for
at the coming Juoe election for amember ol
the State Legislature and the various county
offices. The different precincts will be en
titled to the following representation:

land, was put up on Eoudray and
Seybert to secure Tip Plymale's
nomination for clerk, and will be
done and ready to go by the first
Monday in next June.
The late Democratic Convention
received a pressi ng Invitation from
Dr. Hawthorne to visit the State
lunatic asylum. 'The Dr. doubtless
perceived the out-croppings of in
sanity" in their financial plank adop
ted in the platform.
JOippel's Job is billeQ for Jack
sonville in a few days for a quiet
little run with "the boys." All
ara expected to drink regardless of
previous condition of political servi
tude. KVil will introduce the sub
ject to the audience and Klippel
will denote his extra points.
Tip Plymale's nomination was
the consideration of Job Tozior's.
By this coalitiouTip was enabled to
got away with a nomination over
the wishes of a largo majorit of
tho -genuine Bedrock Democracy
who heartijy preferred another man
for the place. If Tozier goes over-
beard, why not his equally guilty
co-conspirator, Plymale. If one
was a fraud so was the other.
Tho Pemoctatic-Stato convention
ini placed the following ticket in
tho field: For Congress, John
"Whiteaker, of Lano county; For
Governor, V. "W. Thayer, of Mult
nomah; Secretary of State, Thos G.
Beames, of Jackson; Treasurer, A,
II. Brown, of Baker: State Printer,
A.lft)ltuer, of Multnomah; Superin
tendent of Public Instruction, Rev,
. Joseph Emery, of Benton. They
will all receive complimentary tick
ets for a free passage up Salt river
on the 3d of next June.

lowed a few crumbs under his table

hour and never struck a lick, until
after they had received more wages
than tho faithful Bedrocks who had
been toiling for principle since be
fore dawn, ever asked or expected

Democrats and Republicans what is
going to be done in tho way of op
position to tho couuty ticket al
ready nominated aud in the field
Hitherto we have not been able to
give the information sought, but
wo havo learned within the 'past
week that steps are being taken
towards calling a mass convention
of all voters who arc -opposed to
the election of the present, so call
ed, Democratic county ticket, for
tho purpose of nominating a Citi
zen's couuty tioket to be voted for
ami elected next June. We have
been promised a copy of the call for
the same for publication iu our next
issue. From the names and char
acters of those said to bo cnmujedi
in this movement, and the very
general dissatisfaction with the
ticket already out, it looks very
much like tho end of tho one mau
power in our county.

Parly Ties.
The approaching June election is
alreadv reviving the old controver
sies which have been going on in
this county at intervals for the last
eight years, as to tho principles
which ought to govern in tho selec
tion of county officers. Ou tho one
side it is contended that the voter
should always vote his party ticket,
no matter what the nature of the
office- and no matter if he prefers
tho opposing candidate and believe
the public good would be promoted
by his election. On the other
side it is contended with equal ear
nestness, and certainly with better"
reason, in our judgment, that party
obligations cannot and 'ought not to
govern the voter except in selec
tions to those offices whoso adminis
tration involve- political principles.
That outside of tho offices of this
olass the voter has a perfect right
to consult his own personal
preferences in determining whom
he will vote for. The latter senti
ment we believe has ever since its
public avowal in this county, gain
ed ground, and is stronger to-day
than iu any time past. JSor is its
progress confined to this county
alone. .It fills every state, and has
been deliberately adopted by the
Presidential administration as tho
fundamental principle ot its policy
of pacification and reform. Aud
such eminent Democrats and distin
guished statesmen as Hill, Gordon
and Lamar, all Senators from the
Southern States, do not seem to
think their poltical principles, or
those of tho intelligent democracy
whom they truly and ably represent,
will suffer any injury or disparage
ment by their uniting with the
President in carrvmjr this seuti-
ment into effect. And yet the
small politicians wuo aspiro no
higher than to run the politics of
their county, or perhaps precinct or
town, denounce this ssntiment bit
terly when it is proposed to carry it
out in local an-tirs.
The opportunity for a practical
demonstration of the popularity of
'ijear at hand, arid
circumstances were never more
favorable to its adoption. The op
position is already in the field a
ticket made up of candidates hard
ly one of whom is acceptable to the
majority of his own party, and
several of whom have already been
renounced by large numbers of
their party associates. These men
'wero not tho choice of their party
when they received their nomina
tions aud well they knew it, but
they fancied they could either
flatter or bulldose a sufficient num
ber into their support to elect them.
It is strange indeed that these par
ty caucuses aud conventions which
politicians claim as the only effec
tive safeguard of political principles
should not in this instance alone
but in almost every other result iu
nominating men for office whom a
large majority of the party do not
want. There is a wrong some
where, else; the favorites of the ma
jority would have received these
nominations. And if there was
such a wrong, if the will of the ma
jority was thwarted through cun
ning manipulation iu'the convention
which made these nominations,
with what appearance even of jus
tice or right cau these very persons
wno wero tne .authors ot this out
rage como forward aud claim a rat
ification cf their frauds at the
hands of their wronged, disappoint
ed and betrayed constituents. Why
this is but adding insult to injury
and ought to condemn the uufaith-
ful stewards to deeper and more
lasting odium. Yet if the people
stand idly by, with folded hands
and do nothing, this fraud will tri
umph aud add a fresh incentive to
similar machinations in tho future.
The Democratic "boss'
is "ettins
nervous aud making frantic efforts
to consummate the job that he put
up oil his party. Mr. Foudray 's
friends are equally determined
that it shall not be done, aud the
"ring; master" finds himself in thn
position ot Sisyphus, who spent his
me trying to roll a stone to the top
of Mt. Caucasus, but never rot it

cratic noses! ' r
Fall In "Boye.
"Tall in! Fall in boys!!" is the
last imperial mandate of the great
Ringmaster. "Your ticket is nom
inated, no matterwho oro on it or
how they got there. "You can'tgo
behind your returning board. -You
have the privilege of exhibiting
your Democratic blood by fighting
each other like Tom Tigers before
the nominations, but now you must
unite aud enthuse over the ticket
for it is mado up.
"Hold not aloof (from thjs my
ticket out-of envy towards mo, -"for
surely, I have no profit and not"
much pleasure in it. "I get no
spoils, nothing for my pains but the
barren honor of putting such of my
faithful followers on the ticket as I
wish to 6ce there. "There is now
no iother alternative. "You must
support the ticket, the whole tick
et, aud nothing but the ticket, or
go to the Republican party. If
your hearts still entertain rebellious
thoughts towards me and my tick
et, bo not encouraged by the easy
escape of Neil, Tozier ana Grain
from the dire effects of my waked
wrath. "It was the great and pres
sing necessity which overtook me
in my endeavor to nominate Tip
Plymale for county clerk that caus
ed mo to take them back airuin.
