Sentenced for Life The case ol the State of California vs. Walter (J ir rick, son of David C'arriik, charged with being implicated in the murder ol Scott, tried at Yreka last week, went to jury on Saturday,, and they return ed a verdict ol guilty as charged in the indictment, and that he should bs-sent to the penitentiary for Hie. Last Saturday while the stage was coming, over the Siskiyou mountains, and when about a hundred yards above the Toll House, it upset and rolled down the mountain, a short distance. No passengers were on .boardiat the time, and the driver es-- eaped with a lew slight bruises. The only damagq done to the coach was the breaking of the two side lamps, which were in a sadly demoralized condition. Whitean old and highly res- peeled citizen of-this county, died at his borne at Rock Point last Friday morning after an illness of over six mouths. He was an old resident ol Ibis valley, having arrived here in the spring of 53, and has resided at Rock Point for the last 18 years. He leaves a wife and family of grown up sons to mourn his loss. Symplons It begins usually like an ordinary sore throat, with redness and sometimes swelling of tbe arches of the palate, and of the tonsils. There is a slight stiffness of the neck, and the giands-at-the angles of the jaw are en. larged and- tender. Withia-a' period varying from" a few hours to a few dayB', an exudation lakes place on the tonsils, uvula and soft palate.. This, exuda. tion is more or less extensive, generate ly tough, add of a white or grayish hue. It may show but little tendency to spread, or it may extend to the gums and along tbe walls of the pban yox and into the windpipe. In some cases it passes upward into the naris, (where the throat and nose unite) yet itmiy commence there simultaneously with its appearance in the throat. The false membrana-once formed dar-- kens, wastes lrom circumference to' wards the center and gradu ally disap pears. But sometimes the coat be comes for a timo thicker 3nd thicker. by tha constant addition of fresh layers.- mere is generally but little fever ac companying it, but the patient will complain of weakness ''tired" as they generally express it. Many will not even complain of their throat as beog sore. The disease is undoubtedly ono of tho blood, the exudation is the ef fect of the disease.
