ENSIGN JACKKAK'a DOG-
Enfign Jackman was an old Ver
mont farmer. Ho bad a good dog,
that for some reason born bait of bis
owner's name, being plain Jack; and
it would be no reflection on the old
man's sense if we should say the crea
ture knew half as much as he did.
Jackman once owed bis life to Jack ;
and it came about by his taking Jack
with him to his wood-lot, which was a
good way distant from his house. Al
most every da 7' daring the winter the
farmer and bis dog went off together,
always returning safely with great
loads of wood, until one afternoon, as
tbey were jogging homo ward, the sled
canted on a stone, -and the upermost
log on the load rolled off on the en.
sign's side, taking him unaware, knock
ed him down, and held him there
wedged in between the runner and a
huge boulder which almost overhung
the path.
As bo fell be instinctively shouted,
"Whoa l" to the oxen, and they stop
ped at once, then and there. If they
had started at all, the sliding load
would have been precipitated upon his
bead ; but trained and most obedient
creatures, like &11 good oxen, they
minded what was said to them, and
baited with the toppling logs ready to
roll off at the first movement. But
though they might stand there all the
afternoon, as probably "they would,
when night drew near they would go
borne. Besides there was no hope in
them.
"While this had been bappening,.Iack
bad been off careering about the woods,
hunting up hares and staiting up par
tridges, and having a most delightful
time; but now when the ensign whist
led for him, be came bounding back to
the sled-, saw what had happened, and
that he could not get at' his master, and
started for home with the speed of a
race horse.
Mother Jackman saw him coming
down the road, and he seemed to her
to be flying. His lameness did not
hinder him then. He cleared the
ground like a deer running tor his life.'
She knew that something was the mat
ter, and rushed to the door, but instead
of Stopping there be nhot past, and
kept straight on, by several bouses
and shopB, to the shoemaker's. Mean,
while Bhe caught up a shawl, and Bet
out for the woods.
Jack had evidently gone through
with some process of reasoning which
brought him to the conclusion, that it
was a case in which a woman could
not help, not even his own mistress.
And so be sped by everybody ele to
the one mau who had befriended him
He burst on into the presence ot the
shoemaker, pulled -at his shirtsleeves,
and ran to the door, whining. The
man pulled on his coat and followed.
At the grocery-store, next door, he
stopped long enough to tell the dog's
conduct; then borrowed a horse and
sleigh which stood wailing while the
owner waB making purchases, and drove
on alter Jack.
Men came out along the road until
there was quite a party on the way,
some in sleighs and some on foot.
When the old lady was overtaken, she
was picked up and conveyed along.
Jack led the way. There stood the
patient oxen in their tracko; they had
not advanced so much as one ot their
feet in all the time. And there lay the
ensign, quite insensible now, just where
be bad fallen.
A MONSTER SHIP.
The second largest iron steamer next
. to.the Great Eastern has just left a
Pennsylvaniasbipyard, within a month
or so from the launch of ber consort,
the City of "Pekin. The name of this
last splendid contribution to the Amer
ican steam marine is the City of Tokio,
which is understood to be the latest, or
at any rate, most proper came for Yed
do, which everybody knows is the
sacred city of the anoiently eivilbed
Japanese. They will noly probably,
resent the use of tbo name in this case
by even so recently civilirod a people
as the American, but rather ,4burn to
imitate The vessel which bears it, in
their restlessness to get bold of our
special material productions. So that
there will be a feeling of natistaction
all around, and even importunately
"protective" Pennsylvania may be al
lowed to clamor unrebuked for her
hersies against free trade so long as
she -will send out such floating argu
ments as this last for her view of
American prosperity and greatness.
The two ships have corns from &er
mines and workshops, so to tpeak, aeeas
likely to be the beginmag or a acw era
in the art of ship building. Hew York
may still claim the harboring and dis
patching of the greatest vessels that
touch and leave these shores, bat she
must apparently resign the sceptre rn
the domain ot conttraotion. Not till
wood returns to displace iron agin can
she hope at any rate te coeaplste by
the production of B"w raee of Niaga
ras, Adriatic, or Vaiiderbilta, with
a hat Pennsylvania, oat of her wealth
of iron and ooal. has just doae in the
eye ot the world.
