Forthwith oar small edition of his satanic majesty, who had been sav ing himself for tho occasion, in con junction with a ccitain jinenile tele graph operator, went after its contents. Ono glass apiece but whetted their desire for more. A banter was passed as to who could throw himself outside the greatest quantity of lager beer. Banter accepted. Race commenced. Both parties even at the bottom of the filth glass, when a breathing spell was taken. Raco resumed. At the end ol the third our devil showed signs of weakening. A wild look took posses sion ot his usually placid eye, and he began to plead for some one to "put him in his little bed." After bumping three or four telegraph poles and dam aging seveial fence corners he reached home, when he crawled down behind the kitchen stove and went asleep. On being awoke and asked what was tho matter, he said he was sick and thought ho had the measles. There upon the father of tho young man ex amined him very critically, and a tem perance lecture was the result. Our devil promised ho wouldn't do so any more. By dint of perseverance he kept his promise till the next day. P. S. Our devil is of tho opinion that the telegraph operator put that job up on him. N. B. The beer keg is empty. Posttoned. The Teacher's Insti tute for this Judicial District, the programme of which was pub. lished last week, has been post poned on account of the inability of -the State Superintendent of Public In struction, Mr. Syl. The patriarchs took no mercury, no bismuth, no iodine, no, bromide of potassium, no stry cboria. no quinine. Happy old gentlemen ! they did not even know of these "s pecifics." and yet tbey lived until it seemed as if Death had forgotten taem. inelr medicines were derm and roots. They have left this fact on record, aud the world seems now to be taking note of it and returning to the first' principles of medi cation. Hustcttir's Stomach Bitters, the pnrest and mot efficacious vegetable restorative of the day, is also the most popular. Thousands of persons who only a few years ago believed Im plicitly in all the poisons which figure in the pbarmacocpia, now prononnce this palatable tonic aud alterative and all-sufficient remedy for dyfpepsia, nervous debility, constipa tion, bilious complaints, headcahes, inter tmtter.t fevers, and all the disturbances of the Mumacb, the liver, the dis:har)-ing organs and ibe brain. The time is not far distant when most of the powerful and .venomous drugs now r-n recklessly administertd by practitioners of he ' ucroic " scuooi, in cases mat mignt easily be controlled by milder treatment, v. ill be utter Iv discarded by all philosophical physicians. -k it t. the ibiuk'iHg pnblic, who are generally ahead ol the profeiouaN, have already put the dangerous preparation aide and adopted IIos- ttiltr liitlirs in tbeir stead as & safe aud ex cellent liousibold medicine, adapted to almost every ailment except the organic and deadly contagious dis;ae.
