Tncsr , - " THEvSENTINEL. WATCHES, ETC. MEDICINAL. EDUCATIONAL. LITERARY. MISCELLANEOUS. S Gen. Wheaton Vindicated. Tlie following article from the Jler ald, in -vindication of Gen. Wheaton meets onr hearty endorsement. Col. Bellinger, editor of the Herald, partici pated in the Battle on the 17th of Jan-uary-.-andithe facts set forth arc true 'in every: particulars When the Ignited States troops under Gen.'Wfie"atOri, co-operated with by the Oregon Volunteers, lought the dis astrous, battle of the lava-beds, on the Jthif last January, the country was ustoundcd at the result. Gen. Whea ton was sharply criticized and hastily judged. Journalists and others who thought-it necessary to offer some ex planation of "the expected result, did so by accusing tho officer in command of hasty nd. inconsiderate conduct of selecting aToggy dajttfr the attack, and of pushing his iricn to useless slaugh ter. Gen. Wheaton was superseded, although the reasons assigned for the chango had no reference to his manage ment of the fllodoc campaign, yet it -was so misunderstood that it could not , but damage the gallant officer in the good opinion of the public. Gen. Gil ' Jem was assigned to the command be causc.hc was Gen. Wheaton's senior in 'rank, and the war having assumed such large proportions and so many men from California having been concen trated, the senior officer was assigned to tlieic command in obedience to the well-known rule that obtains in such matters. The public, however, gener crally judge by the results, and his su perscdure, under tho circumstances, was most humiliating to Gen. Wheaton .and his. friends. Gen. Wheaton has been completely vindicated by what .has since occurred. General Gillem's attack upon Jack's! stronghold was in all its material iealures precisely the Fame as that of the affair of January lVlli. The plan of attack simultane ously upon the cast and west, was tho same. The maneuver to form n con nection between Green's loft and Ma son's right, so as to cut the Modocs off from water, was precisely what, was before-attempted between Green's left and Mason's right. Gen. Wheaton proposed to conduct his second movement by camping in tho lava-beds to enclose the Modocs' position with troops provided with ra itlons to dislodge tho Indians from their fastnesses by the use of mortars, and to make the engagement a matter of days instead of hours, it necessary. The mortars used by General Gillem were ordered before the change in ommaa4ectiwasunade. Thcso facts, mid the result of jjfcn. Gillem' move, deserve to be recalled and placed to .the credit of Gen. Wheaton., His crit ics have long since been silenced ; let them now be rebuked. Didn't Give It Ur. One of our cit izens is blessed, or othcrwise.-'with a very stubborn wife. In his case, he finds lhat.when a woman will, she will, .yon;may depend "on't, and when she won't, t-lic won't, and that's an end of it. This peculiarity of disposition in his wile is no secret among hisassoci ates, and one meeting him the other day, asked : Well, do you know why you are rjikc.a donkey?" I . "Like a donkey !" echoed W , opening his eyes wide. "No, I don't." "Do vou giveit' up ?" "I do"." "Because your better half is stub bornness itself." , 'That's not bad. Ila ! ha ! I'll give tliat to my wife when I go home." "Mrs. W ," he asked, as he sat down to supper, "do you know why I 'am like a donkey ?" lie waited a moment, expecting his wife to giveit up; butsho didn't. She 'looked. at. hirn somewhat commiscrat irigly 'as she answered : "I suppose it's because you were born so." W has abjured the habit of put ting conundrums to his wife. A Detroit furniture dealer recently found among a mass of old papers in a desk a will bequeathing property worth nearly $30,000 to a lady in Missouri. , Hu wrote to the lady, and subsequently sent her tho will, which was abmitted to probate, and lh6 lady put in posses tiou of the property. The will was nine years old, and the furniture dealer has no idea how it carao into his pos session. Mrs. Michael Dress, ot Schuylkill county, pa., gave birth to seventeen children in seven years, in the following order: First one child, then twins, then triplets, then four children at a birth, then -again triplets, then twins, then again twins. All the children flived lo reach manhood or womanhood. A Missouri woman said she gave aj railroad conductor a ten-dollar bill ; he said it was a two; she insisted; ho persisted ; she took out a revolver and snapped it, and lie gave the eight dol. lars balance, not wishing to have any dispute with a lady. An editor says his experience is the same as of the other editor, who. wrote: Same people act as if their newspaper debts were like coffee, and wpuhi set tle themselves by long standing. - i .
