CITY AND COUNTY.
A Dog Stout. Arthur Langell, ot
Langell Valley, in the eastern part ot
"this county, lad two large mastiff
dog8! named Ben and Butler, poisoned
by one of his sweet tempered neigh
bors recently. The dogs were very
valuable, on account of the care they
'took of Mr. Lihgell's stock. They
were known to go two miles from
Iioae on their own'accounand watch
the wnlves off from a cow that had
lain in the mire until she was too
weak to stand alune, staying with Htar
during the whole night, and were
found with her the following day at a
late' hour, when they were released
from thuir post by Mr. Lingell coming
after the cow with a team and wagon
and drawing her home. A person
who will poison a good dog for no
other purpose than to gratily a mean,
devilioh disposition ought to be set tn
rounding iron for the public. Judge
Green, Judge of a circuit in the north
ern part of Michigan, sentenced a man
to the penitentiary for three years lor
wantonly shooting a New Fonudland
dog on the streets of Pontiac, and the
public approved the justness of the
sentence.

Remedy. The following remedy for
epizootics appears in tlio Yreka Jour

horses afflicted hereabouts: Run a
hot iron in a bucket of tar, to make a

will cause them to gag and cough
away the mucous matter which chokes
them up.

Peters' Musical Monthly.
This periodical stands' at the head of
the musical publications of the coun
try. Jt gives much more space to
ninsic than any of its competitors.
In fact, it contains all the popular mu
sic of the day. The music pages are
numbered, so that they can be de-
tnched and bound, making in the
course .of a year a olume of four
hundred and thirty-two music pages,
and all lor three dollars. J. L. Peters,
publii-hcr, 509 Broadway, New York.

the mass of testimony which has accu

Medical Blunders. JSL A.
From the period when surgeons
plied their salves to weapons iakea
wounds to the present wide awake a
the medical profession has often, tin
wittingly taken side with Disease in its
conflicts with the human system. Eved
yet, in spite of the teachings of centu
ries of experience, some physicians be
lieve in depleting their patients, already
seriously exhausted by sickness, with
powerful evacuants, emetics, ralivants,
cautharidal plasters, or the" lancet.
But, providentially, public intelligence
is ahead of these medical fossils, who
belong, of right, to the era of Crusades!
That powerful ally of nature in its war
fare with the causes of sickness, Hos
teller's Stomach Bitters, has opened
the eyes of the masses to the para
mount importance of increasing the i
lal strength of the body when menac
ed by disease. They understand that
when the atmospheric conditions are
adverse to health, it is wise to reinforce
the system with a wholesome tonic and
stimulant, and thus enable it to combat
and repel the depressing influence H
an inclement temperature, II jbtrcoii.-?
stitutional and animal oowers were al
ways thus recruited In the presence of.
danger, the mortality Irom consump
tion, bronchitis, chronic rheumatism,
etc.. would be much less than it is now.
The causes which produce croup, colds,
quinsey, diplheria and catarrh, seldom
aSect a strong and active vital system ;
and of all vitalizing preparations, Hos
tetter's Bitters have proved the most
efficient. It is not claimed that this
standard tonic, is a specific for lung and
throat maladies, ns it is fur dyspepsia,
liver complaints and intermittents, but
it is unhesitatingly asserted that it is
the best known safeguard against all
the atmospheric elements of disease.
