Freighters are generally earning a piece lor themselves by drawing sup plies to the troops in the neighborhood tot the lava beds. The late rains have caused the grain to start from the ground, which entices flocks of leathered lowls within the range ol fowling-pieces. The late -warm weather so dried out the exposed woodpiles about town that the heavy atmosphere of the present cold 6nap floats it away unseen, where it is unrestrained by roofs and padlocks. "Modoc Punches" have been all the go among the boys lor a few days. They take them internally and admin ister them externally. Taken, they produce red eyes ; given, black ones. Now that Greeley is gone we would suggest that the mission to China be conlerred upon our chief, for he cer tainly comes next to Greeley in ability to mark tcaboxes without instruction or further practice. Bovincs have good times lately, eat ing hay from passing wagons. "Boss" and "Sukey" can at any time be seen leisurely following a hay wagon, calm ly chewing mouthluls of purloined hay worth $20 to 825 a ton. A walk through "Chinatown," during their late carousal, forcibly reminded ns by the smell of the Hoosicr's des cription of a pork-packing establish ment during a warm spell. He said it "sraelled like hell scented with asso foedita ! " Prudent housewives and tastclul ma trons generally are re arranging disor dered walks and garden fixtures about town. Now is the time to restore the ravages ol winter by repairing fences, removing rubbish, and consulting hor ticultural authorities generally. Lieuts. E. It Thcllcr and W. D. Sherwood, of the 2l6t U. S. Infantry, with thirty-two men ol Company I, p isscd through town yesterday morn l lg, on their way to the lava beds. Battery E, 4th Artillory, Brevet Lieut Col. M. P. Wilier commanding, is ex pected to reach here by to morrow or Monday, destined to the saraeYegion. We received the postscript of a let ter irom B. F. Dowcll, postmarked Denver, Colorado, Jan. 22d, but as the letter itself has failed to reach us we omit the publication of the addendum. Probably Capt. Jack intercepted the letter, and is using it for a model in a new system of hieroglyphics, as we are informed he proposes making a change in the Written lanirnirrn nf liia frilm en that Gen. Miller can't affix his signa ture to vouchers without his consent ; and we doubt the Captain's opportu nity to obtain a more completely orig inal system than that letter will afford. Chinese New Year This Celes tial holiday was ushered in on Tuesday last by a most infernal fire-cracker fu silade, accompanied by a charivari din of all manner of heathenish sounds by gong and cymbal, and pig-squaling screeches from bamboo banjos and one stringed fiddles. This is a most im portant holiday with them, and for weeks preceding its occurrence our Chinese population stint their appetito and feed their imagination only, that they may have at hand a good supply of "polk and blandy" lor tho festive occasion. This lirao tho feast lasted lour days, and all housewives depend ent upon Chineso kitchen-help were left in tho lurch, as "John" invariably refuses to waivo his prerogative and "cookee all tho time New Year." Sxow-fau. On Wednesday night a ligbt fall of snow succeeded a cool rain, and on Thursday morning the old lady finished pickincr her trcese in real Michi.gandcr style, the flakes falling as largo as dimes and as thick as dust in an Arizona whirlwind for a few min utes. There was no storm about it, and the ground was barely covered. By noon the snow had vanished. SrEciAi, Notice Is hereby given to all persons having any concern in the matter that Veil Schutz st'ili con. tinues the manufacture ol the very best quality of lager beer, at bis brewery in this city. How do we know? Wc have the evidence right here, and any ono who speaks to the contrarv 5s a Tampirc and Modoc sympathizer. Return of the VelHnteers. On Monday evening last Gen. Ross and staff returned from tho Modoo war, and on Tuesday the Company ol Volunteers marched into town. The boys presented quite a martial appear ance as they passed up the street, re minding one very much ol the return ol a scouting party during the war. Although apparently the worse for wear they still looked hearty and were in the best ol spirits. They are cer tainly entitled to great credit, not only for their promptness in responding to the call for troops, but also for their lib erality in remaining so long after their term of enlistment had expired. Their courage and soldierly .conduct won for them high compliments, not only from their own officers but from the officers ol tho Regular forces with whom they were associated. Indeed, it is believed by many acquainted with the facts that had their example been imitated and their efforts properly sustained early in the light the result would have been quite different. Their return was the occasion lor "a high old time" on the part ol many of them, and right mer rily they put in the twenty-four hours succeeding their arrival. There were some little private differences of opin ion among them concerning the width of several chasms in the lava bed, the possibility of a sage-bush becoming a marksman, individual courage, etc., all of which were magnified by overdoses ol "savago" whiskey, causing in the end a few discolored optics and tattered garments. The intervention ol the more amicably disposed finally restored quiet, though the discussion became at one time so violent and genera! as to excite lears of a renewal ol the battle in the lava beds, with Captain Jack an outsider. The most of them have re turned to their homes, and as soon as the necessary blank lorms are procured and filled out tliey will all receive their final discharge. .a . Too Many for Him. We accident ally heard, the other day, ol a case of connubial indifference which beats the well known corn story. A couple had lived through tho honeymoon without the exhibition oi any disposition on the part ol the bride to care lor their mu tual necessities. The man split the wood, made thc-fires, prepared all the meals, etc, while she quietly lay abed or dawdled in a chair until he called "time." He exhausted argument and failed in eulrcaty, when he decided to shame her if possible, as he had already become quite ashamed of his soiled lin en. So ho quietly arose one morning, made a rousing fire in the stove, filled the boiler with water and set it on the fire, and then with a terrific rush rolled the wash-tubs into the room. "Hallo 1 What now?" said she, for the first time noticing the preparations. Now he had her, he thought, and quietly res ponded, "Going to wash my shirt." A yawn and a struggle in the bed was all he heard for a moment, when she held toward him her own shirt, which she had just drawn off over her head, with the remark, " Here, you can take this and wash it too; and while you're at it you might as well pull oft' my stock ings and wash them also ! " Then, as she closed her eyes lor another nap, he barely caught the suggestion, "Call me, when you get breakfast ready!" That was too much for him. He gave it up. And a Chinaman now musingly curls his cuo about his head, and with a smilo so bland chops vigorously at the matutinal hash in that domicil, while Benedick ponders abstractedly over the theory of woman's rights. ) a Wild Goose Cuasr A stray goose indulged in an aerial snrvev of the nitv on Monday last. Ho was evidently in search of a lost mate, and his cries, as he sailod slowly up and down the can yons and all over the town at tempt ing range, drew lorth the Nimrods in all quarters of the place, and for sev eral minutes he ran the gauntlet of a hot nre irom shotcunnerv. Finallv he nut off northward, unscathed, probably to give that needle gun a show. Catholic Seevices. Rev. Father Blanchet will hold divine services at the Catholic Church to-morrow, (Sun day,) at the usual hour. Dentistev. Dr. Jackson, surgeon dentist, will make a professional visit to Kerbyville, Feb. 17th, and will re main two weeks. Street Commissioner This is but a few lines calling attention to the ad vertisement in another column, bearing tho same heading. Wanted. The attention of Sehnnl Directors generally is called to tho nrv. lice under this heading.. Wnr Endure IVfeai is Cirrable. 1 "What can't be cured mast be en dured," says the proverb; but indi gestion can be cured, and therefore it is the merest stupidity to endure it. Dyspeptics have certainly d rigul to' continue dyspeptics to tho end of their days if they choose but as it is not supposed that any rational beltig pre fers physical torment to Case and health, the probability is that if ail sufferers from indigestion were con vinced that an absolute, infallible rem edy for their complaint existed, they would with one accord resort to it. We most emphatically declare that such a remedy does exist, and that its name is Hostctter's Stomach Bitters. The record of its success extends over a period of more than twenty years, and it is fearlessly alleged that during the whole of that time has never failed to afford permant relief in any disorder or derangement of the stomach that was not organic, malignant, and incurable. The testimonials that go to establish this important fact can be counted by the thousand. Stomach complaints that had been aggravated by a total disregard of all dietary rules, and in tensified and rendered chronic by me dicinal treatment or drastic purgation, nave in hundreds of instances been cured within three months by the sys tematic use of this celebrated stom achic and alterative. It should bo re membered that weakness of the digest ive organs involves many other ail ments. Biliousness, headache, nervous debility, spasms, palpitation ol the heart, rash of blood to the hp.id. vprti. , - , ..... go, nausea, and sleeplessness are among us concomitants ana results ; and tor all these the great vegetable tonic is a specific. It acts firbt upon the stomach, and through the stomach upon J he se cretory and nervous systems and the bowels, its ceneral effect heinir nlwnvH genial and benificcnt. . The Greeley Moxumekt. A New York telegram of the 23d ult., says: A meeting of the Greeley National Statue Committee was held here last evening. Wm. Orton presided. It was announced that something like S15.00O had been RnhsnririPil Presi dent Orton then said it was tho desire that every State and town should sub scribe to the fund, and subscriptions from ono dollar upward would be re ceived. As soon as tho subscription lists closed they should be sent to the treasurer. William W. Niles was ap pointed President of tho Committee, and Andrew II. Green. Trp.isnrer Tr. was decided to collect S40,000 to erect in central i'ark a bronze statue, with a pedestal Of rranite frnm 'rw TTnmn. shire, and place a simple memorial tab let, over me grave at lireenwood. Which will be erect ed first? or last the longest if put in position ? Wc will give a few pounds of type metal if wc are called upon to do so. Henry Ward Beecher said a good thing and a wise thing at the New England dinner, when he declared that the cry against politicians, as a class, was neither just nor reasonable. He might have added that it was both meaningless and absurd. There are bad politicians, as there are dishonest merchants ami cheating bankers, but that all who engage in politics are es sentially selfish or essentially knavish, is untrue, or else it is only a question of time when the experiment of popu lar government will wind up in a dis graceful failure. The form of our gov ernment presupposes a politician in every citizen, and the evils of our gov ernment arise Irom there being too few, and not too many, who are willing to be politicians to the pvtnnt m ;ni.. imj themselves in the election of public uiucers ana conduct ot public affairs. Libkeal. In its usually vigorous waging of war on all kinds ol monopo lies or public impositions tho S.in Francisco Chronicle has taken up the cudgel against the extortionate "Em ployment Agencies" ot that city by charging 15 cents lor advertisements ol five lines for ladies in search ol work barely paying lor the setting ol the type and 6ays it will continue to use every means in its power to break up all kinds ot extortionate practices in that city. Success attend the effort. Telegeapii Rates. On the 1st of February (to-day) a new tariff on ten word messages takes effect over all lines oi tho Western Union Company. The new tariff from any Western Un ion office to any other Western Union office on all their lines will not exceed two dollars and fifty cents lor a ten word message. This mates the tariff from here to Now York. Washinrton etc., $2 50 lor ten words. Pity there is no competition between San Francis co and Portland. Off fob. WisniNGTos. Hon. J. TT Mitchell sailed from Portland for 8n Francisco, on the-25th inst.. on hiw I to Washington- Another Fight with the Modoc?. On Monday last Gen. Wheaton sent over the wires the following brief ac count of another fight between his forces and the Modo'Cs at Tule Lake: I have the honor to' report a decided success on the 23d instant.- The Mo docs came out ol the lava bed in lorce and attacked an escort of twenty-two ffiehj who with two wagon's, we're mov ing grald from Land's ranch ttf Ber nard's camp, at Jesse Applegate'rY on Clear Lake. The non-commissioned officer sent a courier to Col; Bernard who hurried to their aid With reinforce ments and charged the Modocs, who" were then slowly retiring. The Indi ans being on open ground fled in con fusion to the lava beds. Four of them were killed, several wounded and all their horses captured. Many Indians threw their rifles into Tnle T,at- as they fled to their stronghold in the rocks. Didn't Succeed. After his fiasco in this place Sam Colver started on a lec turing pilgrimage northward, with the avowed intention of "firing ye Web foot heart" with the fervor of his elo quenco. But judging from tho com ments and compliments passed upon him by tho papers along-his line of pil grimage, he found that heart about as hard to ignite as the native fir of that soggy land. His efforts invoked such epithets as "bilk," "shyster," "unmiti1. gated ass," and even down to "Hon.," as one of the Portland papers dubbed him in the following notice ol his ar rival in that city : "PEnsoxAi.Hon. Sam'l Colver is in this city,- and will probably lecture on the Modoc War, at the Court House on' Saturday evening. Probably was apparently Well put in, as we have not heard ol him since.
