r'Mr. Seward waa born in the town
'f.Plorida, Orange county, New York,
Ha; 16, 1801. He waa liberally edu
cated' and' studied law under two ot
the ablest and profoundest ot the erai
aent lawyers qt New York City, John
Doer and Ogden Huffman, (fathea of
Judge Hoffman of the United States
District Court ot Sao Francisco). At
the Bar he won much distinguihment,
specially in criminal practice. He
was Chairman ot the Young Men's
Adams Convention in 1828 in his na
tive State, next joined the ami Masonic
tarty, by whom he was chosen to the
Mate Senate, and subsequently he al
lied his rpoilicaI fortunes' with the
..Whig party ol Henry Clar. He was
defeated lor Governor ot New York in
1834 by Win. L." Marcy, but in 1838
he was elected to that high station,
and was the first Whig Governor of
the Empire State. His re election fol
lowed in 1838, and in 1842 he declined
a re nomination. He did not enter
public life again in the way of office
until 1849, when he was chosen as an
United States Senator. He opposed
Know Nolhingism in 1855, as ho had
Native Americanism in 1844, and his
re election followed on the expiration
of his first term. On the inauguration
of Abraham Lincoln as President in
1861, Mr. Seward entered the Cabinet
as Secretary of State, and he continued
in that position until the close of An
drew Johnson's administration. Since
then he completed a tour of nearly
the wholo United States, iroin the At
lantic to the Pacific, and Oregon and
Washington Territory and Alaska were
especial objects of his memorable tour.

return from' that country sailed irom
8an Francisco on a tour of the globe.
Japan, China, the Indies, thence across
to the Mediterranean and through all
Europe, he journeyed, and by every
sovereign and reigning potentate, and
by all classes of the people, from roy
alty and nobility to the gentry and
humblest, ho was received with disiin
guished consideration and honored and
feted and lionized an rip citizen or any
ther-ljad ever beta before. He re
turned to'his native State, and in his
peaceful Auburn home he sat himxelf
tlOwn to sweet retirement for the clos
ing days of his most evehtful hie.
There he was 'some time ago stricken
with' paralysis which impaired his bodv
bit hot his mind, and up to a very brief
time back he was busily enlaced udoii
an elaborate and extended history of

tion tor a faithful history of his whole
lifetime.

away the coveted prize. But like
Henry Clay, with the old Whig party,
be at last soared above the ambition to
be President, and preferred to bo rec
ognized as the-f oremost leader ot his
party, as. he was.in fact during the war
the moat influential among those who
haped tho destiny ot the Nation in
that momentous struggle between the
warring sections. WeTiave not space

imlhe.field of diplomacy over the most
accomplished ot the veteran statesmen

in the cause of the Union at home.
They are embalmed and preserved in

elective antagonists to Slavery, and

tha Higher Law doctrine which first
