Hon. Jas. F. Wilson. Hon. James
F. Wilson, of Iowa, has been slandered
by being called an opponent of Grant's.
This extract lrom a recent speccn snows
with what truth : "He has done as well
in his high office as any man wonld
have done. He is a patient, able, plod
ding man, who neglects no trust and
betrays no confidence. Let those who
can point to deeds of their own as great
as his criticise him. Let drones and'
failures be silent. What a man has
done constitutes the true standard by
which to try him. Take Grant's " his
tory for tho last twelve years, and you
may safely challenge the world to
match it. The storm of maligant men
dacity which has burst upon him will
spend its fury in vain. The peopto of
tins country, gratemuy rememcenng
his great services, will see to his safe
deliverance, xne .american people are
not ungrateful. Noyember will prove
this by the re-election of Grant."

Foot," tho Indian warrior whoyas

few years ago. His depredations ano
cunning were so frequent and gra$
that ho was hunted down like' & wild
beast. When shot down he was stilt
able to keep his assailants at bay by
the rapiditvand urecision witfiNsrhitfi
he discharged arrows in every direction,.-
where he fell, and he retained life so
long that his slayers left him to did
without venturing to examine or'caro
for his remains. His jawbone, which
was picked from his remains by Mr.
Hunt a short ticno since, is said to re
semble thai of a beast mora than of a
human being. He was considerably
more than six feet in hight, of power

A doctor was summoned toaootlago
in Harwood, in England, and found a
boy in need of his services.
"Show yourtongne," said the doctor.
Tho boy stared like an owl.
"My good boy, let me seo your
tongue," repeated the doctor.
"Talk Enclisb, doctor." said tho old
lady; and then, turning to her son,
said : ' "
"Hoben thy gobbler, and purt out
thy lolliker."
Tho mouth flew open, and the doc
tor was terribly "taken in."
A curious calculation has been made
by an eccentric individual well known
in Pans for his peculiar antipathy to
the fly. He collected 3,000 flies in ,a
room measuring 70 cubio feet. On tho
floor ho spread apounded loaf of sugar.
At the end of four days he went to in
vestigate the result of his experiment.
There remained a teaspoonful of sugar,
JLhis statistician, therefore, calculates
that sugar being at the rate of thirteen
cents a pound, a fly costs tho country
twenty cents from its birth to'itcr death,
that is if fed an loaf sugar.
Tho Grand River and Sioux Indian
delegation called on Secretary Delano
on the 17th of September. They made
the usual speeches, complaining of pov
erty, begging guns and ammunition,
and want the railroads passing through
their country torn up. Tho Secretary
wanted them to go to farming, and
promised them implements and to put
them in a better country, whero they
can have the advantages of civiliza
tion. After all, it is the best wisdom to"
treat with absolute indifference or con
tempt a great deal that happens in this
world of misunderstandings. Let any
good and well-meaning man reflect "up
on the blunders and slanders that as
sailed and possibly annoyed him one
week ago, and consider how very dead
they are now ! Such fruit o( ignorance
and malice dies ol its own rottenness.
All the known volcanoes in the world
seem to be simultaneously "on a bust."
Tho volcano of Merapi, Japan, which
has been quiet oyer since 1803, recently
broke out in great f pry, burying a num
ber of villages, filling up tho ravines
and checking the course of rivers, be
sides destroying a frightful number of
inhabitants. The eruption of Hecla is
looked for every day. x
Bees consume large quantities of wa
ter when building comb and" raising
brood. Want of water is one pf the
causes of dysentery among them. A
bucket or trough filled with water,
with a few pieces of old honeycomb or
sticks for the bees to alight upon and
drink in safety should be kept near the
hives.
The Republican candidates for Pres
idential Electors in Oregon, in pursu
ance of arrangements made by .tho
State Central Committee, will each
canvass his own district, and will seo
that there bo held at least one mass
meeting in each county between -now
and the November election.
Colored people of Kentucky are be
coming: real estate owners. One agent
alone, residing at Lexington, sold them
the past year $100,000 worth of houses
and lots for their own use, and the col
ored population of that town pay taxes
on $4,000,000 worth of real estate.
Few people know, and thoasands.do

danger of breaking than with: a timcan.
"A woman's greatest enemy is tho
looking glass," said a husband Jo his
wife, who was admiring herself in, the
mirror while he was sipping hii wine.
"That maybe," she replied, '"but 'it
does not cost her and her children half
so much woe as a man's wine-glass."'
