' " The Kcail on Greeley
The truthful saying olEmrson, that
'Curses always recoil on the head oj
him who imprecates lh-m," mot fit
tingly applies to Grre'ey in hi present
insane struggle for the Presidential
chair. He attempted to pave the way
to that high position by maligninsr
thnso that had actual merit those
thit were popular with the people, and
who stood in his, way as a consequence
of their worthiness. But, alas ! how
the table has turned. Greeley has the
sad, but deserving, misfortune of seeing
his old friends hurl the poisoned ar
rows, that he so adroitly prepared for
others, back at his own head with re
doubled force. Carpenter's affidavit
will cause thousands more to desert
him. It is surprising how any Repuh
Iican can justify himself in supporting
Greeley after reading how he has been
compromising with traitors for the sor
did purpose ot carrying out his own
selfish ends. Carpenter's affidavit ex
plains the reason of Greeley's being
seen with rebel incendiane. The mem
bers ot Chapin's church will no longer
be astonished in seeing Greeley walk
ing arm it. arm with Saunders, thu reb
el who planed the buring ot Northern
Cities, which plan, it it had been sue
oesslul, would have cost the lite of
thousands of innocent women and
children.
Bosrox, August 6. Win. Lloyd
Garrison, in a column and a half letter
addressed to Charles Sumner revu wing
the Senator' recent communication in
the colored voters, sav s : 'I propose to
speak with equal plainness, and as
earnestly to counsel my colored coun
tryraen not to follow your lead in this
matter, but as voter to move unitedly
for the re election ol Grant, for every
coiikideration pertaining to their safely
and happii, for the cause of equal
right, and for the furtherance ot
national peace and unity.
Theodore Tilton says in his paper;
"Save me from a God who dsmns." An
acquaintance replies: We should like
to do it, my boy, bat the thing is ini.
possible."
