Honest Democrats-
Out of the 724 delegates to the Bal
timoie Convention, theio were but 38
that chimed any pretension to having
honest convictions of the tiuthfulness
of Democratic principles. All tho rest
scouted tho idea, and voted for a radi
cal Republican upon a Republican
platform.
Out of all the Democratic journals
in tho country, there is about one in
fifty that stick to what has been called
Democratic principles. The others
havo gone over, and aro fast goin
over to Greeley. Those that talked
tho loudest about tho "old democratic
piinciples of our party," arc the first
to desert them and jump over to old
Chappaqua, the farmer.
This looks like a snake creeping out
of bis skin. This is secession within
secession, a wheel within a wheel,
Democrats receding from Democracy.
Good for yon, old Democratic Party;
you sympathized v,ith traitors, and
now yon arc being paid back in your
own coin. This treacherous action of
tho Demociats to their old party re
minds us of tho fato of tho n calthy
father, who taught his son to be to sel
. fish and pcnuiiou's that ho swindled
the old gentleman out of his lich es
tate, and rudely turned him out upon
tho cold charities of the world.
Janus-Faced.
Tho Chappaqua gardener is telling
tbo people that he is a farmer. lie is
doing this upon the principle that it is
policy to be all things unto all men.
If he was in Rome he would be a Ro
man. You can't play that old man ;
if wo want a farmer in the Presiden
tial chair, wo will put one of our liist
class western farmers in that lias a
farm of somo magnitude; ve will not
take a Chappaqua gardener. Wc don't
want to feed on a patch of onious for
tho nest four years.
AYhy don't you bo honest about it
and tell tho peoplo that you are no
thing but a Chappaqua gardener, and
a poor one at that, Horace, and not
jnako yourself appear ridiculous by
Irying to blow a little garden into a
farm.

The Eugene City Guard, in speak
ing of tho Baltimore Convention, says:
"If success was the object of the Con
vention, and wo can account for its
strange action on no other basis, why
did they not inako assurance doubly
cure and nominate Grant ?"'

wanted him as bad as Jack did his
supper, but didn't nominate hira for
r the same reason that Jack didn't eat
his supper. Greeley is good enough 1
for beggars. '
Efficient Kail Servics-
A short time since it was reported
that the Oregon and California Stage
Company had offered to decrease the
tunc between the termini of the Rail
roads la sixty hours, if the Postmaster
General would increase the compensa
tion sisty thousand dollars per annum.
Wo presume the offer was accepted, as
the company are carrying out their
promise and conveying mails and pas
sengers from Portland to San Fran
cisco, a distance of seven hundred
miles, in the unprecedented 'time of
three and a half days. Expedition is
everything to business men, and the
additional compensation is trifling in
comparison with tho benefits derived
from this very desirable and necessary
change in time. We believe that the
efficient service now being perlormcd
on this important route, is due to the
energy of Col. Hooker, the Superin
tendent of the O. & C. Stage Co., and
he s"eeras determined to show the pub
lie that he intends to continue it, even
at a heavy expense, to the Company.

tions to the Postmaster General for his
prompt acceptances of the offer, and
the increased travel shows that the
new arrangement is appreciated by
it.
The Anti-Grant Movement-
The most degraded element of the
South, the scum of the North, the of
fice seekers, the repudiators, the cop
pciheads in the days of the rebellion,
the disorganized, the fault finders, the
moral jackals, who prey on graveyards
and feed fat on slander, falsehood and
corruption, arc received with open
aims into the bosom of the Greeley
party, that has but one molto on its
bariuers: "Anything to beat Grant"
Begone ye pests and festering sores
that ever lurk in the rear of civiliza
tion I You are but the virus that has
been thrown oft from the body politic.
Tho honest millions have met the same
crowd before, and will meet them
again in November nest with dupli
cated victory. The grand old party
of freedom, whoso bauners aie unstain
ed, whose ranks are filled with honest
patriots, whoso triumphal march is the
maich of justice and civilization, will
win a victory, under its trusted leader,
over which the friends of freedom
nv erj'where vv ill rejoice.
Honest, but In the Dark.
The Eugene City Guaid, and a few
other Democratic papers, are deplor
ing the action of the B iltimoro Conven
tion, and declare they will not give up
their Democratic principles; while the
majority of the Democratic journals
aie laughing at them for their honesty,
aud ridicule tho idea of a Democrat
harping about principle. The majori
ty of the Democratic journals, by their
action in indorsing Greeley with aRe
publican platfoun, most emphatically
declate that all their cry about princi
ples have been hypocritical and false.
This is a very frank confession by
tho Democracy, so far as actions are
concerned ; but it is a stinging insult
to the few ignorant, honest Democrats
who have thought that you weic sin
cere in your democracy. Honor among
knaves is played out in the Democratic
party. You make each other believe
that you are sincere in what vou pro
tend, and then laugh at the victims ior
being duped.
Can't Swallow Him. The CliL-a" o
2'imcs, an out-spoken Democratic pa
per ot the lirst stamp, declares that
Democrats 11133- as well go the Grant
party as tho Greeley parly. It de
clares that the Baltimore Convention
w as packed by "Liberal Republicans
in the interest of Greeley," whose
nomination is the disbandment of the
Democratic party, leaving its members
aud iu journals lree to support whom
tever they please; and taat persons
holding Democratic piinciples are not
under tho slightest obligation to sup
port the nominee.
1 hold our Government bound by
its duty of protecting our citizens in
their fundamental rights, to pass and
enforce laws lor the extirpation of the
execrable Ku KIux conspiracy ; and if
it has not the power to do it, then
say our government is no government
but a sham. I, therefore, on every
proper occasion, advocated and justi-

cially desirable for the South ; and if it
does not prove strong enough to effect
its purpose I hope it will bo made

A Word on "Military Despotism "
We commend the following table to
those who believe in the silly twaddle
retailed from the stump by Democratic
Iiberalties, that our government has
become a military despotism, wherin
the rights of citizens are trampled un
der loot. We are, today, the most
benevolent, magnauimous, and chari
table nation on the face of the earth.
The American citizen, who behaves
hjmself, enjoys, to the fullest estent,
personal liberty. Theje is no invasion
of his rights by the government. Our
"liberal" friends confound liberty with
license. Liberty is perfect freedom to
do rijiht. License is the unreitminod
privilege to do "wrong. No honest,
law-abiding citizen complains of the
rigors ot the law. The complaint
comes from the miserable cut-throats
of the South, who think, under a free
government, they should havethe
right to pillage, and burn, and murder
to their heart's content. Not satisfied
with their murderous attempt to de
stroy the Union, they repay the mag
nanimity of the covernment which
kept their necks from the halter, by
scourging and murdering the loyal
men who stood true to the party that
saved the Republic. Because the gov
ernment reached lorth its stron" arm
and protected these persecuted loyal
ists, punished a lew of these outlaws,
and stopped their work of butchery,
they and their friends end up the
howl of ''military despotism."' The
present administration has been too
lenient. It gave the Statts of the
South a fair opportunity to protect
their citizens, instead of granting
protection it saw the Southern States
encouraging these brutal outrages,
until it felt that longer forbearance
would be a positive crime. The result
ol its intervention has had a good ef
fect. The KuKlux bands have been
broken up, the poor whites and blacks
breathe freer; they realize that freedom
aud citizenship meat! something more
than !ie light to be whipped or shot;
feeling ot security has taken the
place of the reign ot tenor, and the
better clascs ot citizen?, who honestly
desire a return ot peace and prosperity,
feel somo encouragement in their ef
forts to maintain law and order in
their midst. To all who rebelled
against the government, who incurred
the penalty of death, but who have
been pardoned by a generous admin
istration who have been the recipient ol
a magnanimity, such asihe world never
beloro w ituesccl, we commend the
exhibit. Let it be borne in mind that
those who committed treason against
French government were compaiativu
ly lew in numbers, mostly confined to
Paris :

Vindication- of General Bctlek.
The proceedings in the suit of Tilden
against Butler, concerning the seizure
of the .Nassau, have been discontinued,
and alter an explicit statement by tho
counsel of the plaintiff that they were
entirely satisfied Gen. Butler had act
ed solely in the interests of tho Gov
ernment, and for praiseworthy objects.
They admitted, further, that they had
been misled by their own witnesses,
and declared it a mere act of justice
that the proceedings should be discon
tinued. Gen. Butler thus comes out
triumphantly, and deserves, as he will
receive, tho congratulations of his
friends and of a public that believes
in lair dealing.
Grant and his policy deserve the
highest credit. Horace Greeley.
There is one thing that can always
be found and that's fault.
General Grant has never been beaten
and ho never will be. Horace Greeley.
