The very able and interesting report of the proceedings of the Board ot Town Trustees, is crowd ed out this week for want of room. 'We.tf enabled to give only, a. few items, gleaned from the report. Also an order for grading 250 feet of 4th street, on .the same terms as the con tract with Dutton was made, and Street Commissioner Boschey directed to car ry it into -effect. Our readers will find inranother place, in to-day's paper, Ihe annual report of Wm. M.s Turner, Schopl,Superintendent of this county. We would recommend its careful per usal by the patrons of education in this county.- Wealth is not attainable by every one, butintthis country the elements of a good, sound education are not beyond tbeiweh of any. The former is not to be compared with the latter, and Mr, Turner deserves the thanks of the public in bringing this subject so fairly and forcibly before it at this time. Since entering upon the duties of his'offiee he has visited as many of the district schools in the cotmty as it was in his power to do, and his reflections upon the subject on which he speaks, are sharpened by actual observation and experience. Stock Dying, ts Douglas Countt. WeJ see by our Douglas county ex changes, that cattle, sheep, and hogs, are df ing off in that county for want of food. This is almost invariably the case 'there., The abundant smuttier range for stock, enables the Douglas county farmers and stock-raisers, to keep an almost unlimited amount of stock during the Bummer, but little provision being made for winter, they annually lose epongh through sheer starvation to nearly pay their taxes, if the same were taken care of and sold at the usual spring prices. Economy, without regard to the suffering of the starving stock itself, ought to cause them to make a more abundant provis ion for their winters there, which are characteristicaljy variable and uncer tain. Oub Daily Exchakges. The Daily ITerald and Daily Statesman have both suspended so far as this office is con cerned. Much as we feel aggrieved over thpir loss, we shall endeavor to worry it down, looking to time to assuage our poignant sorrow. If. that is the best you can do, cotemporaries, you can stop the weeklies also. It is "our best for your best, or no exchange." . i Death of lloif. Iaxsing Stout. Iton. The railroad era has dawned in Oregon, and the 'Willamette Farmer, not to lie outdone by the improvements going on in our State, has made its appearance in a new dress, greatly enlarged. No. 1 of Vol. 3 has reached us. It presents a handsome appearance; is an eight page paper, five columns to tho page; size of sheet 2Gii8 inches ;, and is ably con ducted. Subscription price, 82,50 per year. Printed weekly byA.I. Stin sou, Salem, Oregon. A Failure. As we expected, the modern vigifance committee in Douglas county has fizzled. Such institutions are no longer needed in this country, and no body need feel alarmed over the organization of a modern vigilance committee. From private letters we learn, that the parties warned some time ago to "flee the wrath to come," on the shortest possible notice, are still living quietly and comfortably at home, and have neither been molested nor made afraid. Fbom Josephine County. A friend writes us from Josephine that the debt of that county has been reduced to less than 3,U0U, and that it is the intention to pay it all off this year. He also in forms us that there is ample range in that county for 100,000 head of stock, and a large importation is expected this season. It seems to us like folly for our stock raisers to go off East of the mountains in search ot grass when there is such splendid openings in art adjoining county, and that too, where their stock is not so likely to be killed off by hard winters and snow storms: Plaindealer FbeIgut Wagon foe Sale.
