The re cent rains, and indications of more to come yet, have set the'nriners to work in good earnest, gettlngTeady to mine when there shall 'be sufficient water to do to advantage. The rain that has fallen, so far, Iras iioen'slight, but it is to the minds of tie -miners of this sec tion the harbinger-of more, and all the boys ask is water enough, and they will work out their own salvation in a pecuniary sense. Snow in the VrJircnuxs. For some days back there basTjeen snow in small quantities on the higher mountains sur rounding the Kogno River Valley. As a consequence we have bad somo cool weather, but not so much so as to be uncomfortable. German Sasitabt Fund. The sub scriptions for the abovo fund have, so far, been very liberal. The object lor which this money is collected is cer tainly a noble one to relieve the suf. -feting and want of the wounded, wid ows and orphans and no one will re fuse to contribute his mite. "Prairie Schooners." The huge freight teams sometimes figuratively "but not inappropriately termed "prairie schooners," have ceased their trips to Crescent City lor the winter. The merchants here have now full winter supplies and can accomodate the most fastidious-in regard to styles and prices. Personal. Mr. Silas J. Day, who went East, sometime ago, as Represen tative from the Grand Lodge, I. O. O. P., of this State, to the Grand Lodge, U. S., L O. O. F., Las returned to tl city. lie looks well and hearty and .seems to be glad to be at home again Assessment. The Gold Hill Mining (Company have levyed an assessment of one dollar and twenty-five cents per share; see their ad vertisment in another column. Claims Against the United States. Wo call the attention of those having claims against the United States to the advertisement of B. F. Dowell, in to day's paper; they will find it to their advantage to consult him. Rogue River Bridge. We are in formed that tho repairment , of the bridge across Rogue River, at Rock Point, has been completed, and that the bridge is again open for travel. Personal. Hon. J. D. Robert Hargadine, of Ashland, has purchased 200 Angora goats,- in-Californiaj and proposes to give them a trial in this section "of Ihe county, about Ashland. They are val uable for their coats of long, fleecy, white hair, much prized for manufact uring purposes. If a success, and we have no reason to doubt it, 'it will add another important article to our list of home productions, and Mr. Hargadine deserves credit for his enterprise. Capture of Railroad Robbers. Five men, suspected of being compli cated in the late railroad robberies, are reported as being captured. Wells, Fargo & Co. oner a reward of 85,000 for the capture of the robbers; and the railroad company offers in addition one thousand dollars for the arrest and conviction of each robber. .Election. The special election for Street Commissioner resulted in the election of Mr. Peter Bossche. Mr. Bossche received all the votes cast. Tub List One. On last Wednes day morning the body of the "last war rior" of the Shasta Indians, a once powerful and numerous tribe, was found jn a stall of the '-Treka Stable," at Yreka, Cal. He had been shot through the head, it is supposed by another Indian. . Trotting Race. On Friday before Christmas Messrs. Kilgore, Mansfield, J. N. T. Miller, Henry Brown, Bozarth, J. C. Tolman and Robt. Hargadine will try their trotting stock, on the Bybee track. Mile heats 3 and 5 terms, $100 entrance fee each. Died, Charles Williams, formerly of this place, died at his residence, in Oregon City, on the 4th inst. He leaves an amiable wife and several children to mourn his loss. Rettrned. A. P. Owen has re turned from Camp Warner, last week. He is satisfied with that country, and will remain this winter at Ashland. In Tows. "Jim" Comstoct is in town.
