Tit mm sentinel. IxuiT Morning, Dec. 12, 1808. A ChulUblo Deed. Au Irishman in an Eastorn village took a contract to sink n well. Ho reached a depth oi twenty five feet pnd oonicrpvotcd to rcaoh water. Next morning on going there early he found it feared in. Attar a Tew moments spent in lamentation over his bad luck a bright idta'struck him. Hanging his lint and coat noar the windlass ho quietly with drew to .the top of a neighboring hill, where hiddon in the shrubbery he awaited to seo what would happen. As the morning wore on the inhabitants began to arouse and stir out. Several were attracted to the well, thinking that, as Pat's hat nnd coat were there, he was below, of course, at work. Soon the alarm wns raiswtl that the well hadcaved in nnd that P.it wan in it. A crowd colloctcd nnd stood horrified at the Uto of poor Pat. A brief con saltation was held, and soon spades ami other instruments were brought to 'li? out.thc remains of the unfortunate man. To work they went with a will ; when one set became wearied with tho unit ual labor, a dozon ready hands graWd thcjQStruments nnd dug lustily. Pat quietly looked on from his retroat on the eminence, while, tho wholu village stood around the well, and waited with broathless suspense, tho work go brave ly on. As tho diggers approached the bot tom, the excitement of the bystaudcis grew intense ; and they collected n near as safety would admit, garinc fearfully down into tho woll. With great care's ml precaution the dirt was dag away; nnd when tho bottom wa at last reached, no Pat was to be found. The crowd before so anxious gradually relaxed into n broad grin which broke forth in nproariouq merriment, when tho vertible Pat walked up with a smil ing countenance and aililromeil the crest fallen diggers who now stood weary and soiled with their labors : , ' "Bejabers, gintlemin, and it's Patrick Fagan, sure, that is much obleged to yens for rloin' of of that nice little job "of work !" The effect can be better imagined than described, and as the most ncti c of the young men slunk off, several low-breathed muttering broke forth that sounded Tory much like "sold." Throngh the kindly nid of liii follow citizens Pat soon finished his well, and it remains among tho monuments of his genius trwlsr Dangers or .Mi:. uk LdrKits. Ev- i .i , , ., erywhero there are dangers nnd eviln, , of which somo affect the iiitolluctn.il :...nnn.. i .i .... i uifyiu viiiuuo, uiki imicrn iirw iiiiiuviir yblo to the moral worth of literary men. In this country, especially, it too often happens that the young man who is to live, by his talents, and to rank the most of the natno of a schol ar, is tompted to tarn his literary cred it to tho quickest account by early making himself of consequence to some of tho people, or, rather, to somo of their factions. From the moment ! is found yielding himself np to their errices, or huntinsr af tor popular favor, his time, his studies, and his powers yet in their bloom aro all lost to learn ing. Instead of giving his days and nights to the study of the profound masters of political wisdom, instead nf patiently reseivitig tho lessons of hi tory nnd prauiical phylosophy, he pre maturely takc9 part in all tho dUscn ions of the day. His leisure is wasted n the profligate productions of dema gogues, and his curiosity bent on tin minnctru of local polities. The one quence is, that his mind is so much dis sipated, or his passions disturbed, that the quiet speculations of the scholar can no longer detain him. Ho hear the bustle of Committia, he nihlicr out of tho grave of Egeria, and Xuina and the Muses call aitor him in vain. It is pvrhapa one ot the incurable oviU ol our constitution of society, that his ambition of immediate notariety nnd rapid success is loo early excited, nnd thus it is tho promises of literary ex cellence are so frequently superceded. ' Filial Lovk. An iimtanoe is rcla ted in anoieat history of a certain citv that waa besieged for a long time, and t last it was obliged to surrender to tha invaders. Two brothers in the oity, having done somo kinduess to the conquering general, received permiss ion to leave the city beforcit was set on fire, and to take with tlmm nu much oi their property as each could carry about his -person.
