Two Fore Shoes.
. Col. F., a very irritable ami impa
ticnt man, bad occasion once, while ,
passing along on horseback through a
small town in tho "West, to patronize
a Dutch blacksmith.
" Are you a smith ?" he asked of a
Btout, black bearded, smoking, begrim
mod old man, who camo out of tho shop
to look at tho horso's defectivo shoes.
"Yes, I be der stui.lt," replied
meiuhcrr, steadying his long pipe
with his left hand. " You wish to have
do new shoes put on ?"
"No, Bir," replied the Colonul, in his
quick way. "Set the shoes of his fore
feot, that's all."
41 1 set do shoes on do four leet yah,
I now ondorstan.' I vill have htm in
ono hour shoed."
The Colonel went away and returned
at the appointed time, aud found the
blacksmith still at work at work on his
horse. Ho was very wroth when he
saw the stato of affairs', but he went
away again with the promise that von
half hour the shoes would bo set.
After dinner, in no very mild humor,
he made his appearance again at the
shop, and askca what was pay.
" Four shillings" was the reply.
"Four shillings! what nn impost
tion S" exclaimed" tho fiery ColoneL " 1
never paid over a shilling for getting a
bhoc in mv life."
"Voir "well." nodded mcinherr.
" Von frhilliuc for the von sdioe I set
dc four shoes dat ish four shillings
nichts." , ,
" Nick ! the old Xick !" roared the
excited traveler. ""Who told you to
eet more than two shoes?"
"Bv doonder, you tell me yourself,"
said the smith."
"IS Tin a falsehood !" answered
the traveler; "its a lie a"
"Mem Got ! You say do hhocs on de
foro feet f '
"So I did," said the traveler; "the
two bhoes on tho fore feot !"
"Got in Himmel! two shoes on the
four feet! You hat on dree heads so
much."
"You'ctomal f-fooll" exclaimed tho
Colonel, who stuttered when he was
excited " 1 said set the fore shoes on
those two f-feet, you b-blundering
.Dutchman.''
"You Yankee goose! monkey, you
tarn jackass, fool.
The Colonel replied, stuttering won-e
than ever. The smith struck his fist
and jabbered Dutch, his knowledge of
English being exhausted; and they
had it back and forth until a mutual
friend came up and explained the mat
tcr. The Colonel paid the charge,
laughing at the mistake, while IFerr
Brooked fiercely, cursing copiously at
that which made fore feet two feet and
two feet four feet, any way but the right
way doonder and blitzcu !
As Amkiucax Hor a Fkkncii Count.
Curious to relate, says the X. Y.
7WItiic' Paris corresjiondont, the
Secretary who reads the minutes to
day, the Count 'Wells de Lavallctte, i
nn Amorican by birth. Uy what
strange chain of eircumitanccs do we
find a Cannectieut boy a French citi
zen, a Count, and a deputy in the
Corps Lcgiblatifl, for to be a ."secretin v,
he must 11 'rat be elected a deputy ? 3fr.
Wells, of Connecticut, long ago estal
lished at Havre and Fans a banking
and commission house, and died in
France, leaving a widow and t-on to
enjoy the fortune he had accumulated.
This" widow married the Marquis dc
Lavallctte, a diplomat under the mon :
nrchy and a leading man in tho conn
cils of the Second Empire. The Mar
quis had no children, so he adopted
Mr. Samuel ells, Ins wile s son, as
his own child, nnd hi title of Count,
which is tho richt of tho elder son of a i
Marquis, confirmed to him by the coun
cil of the State. Thus Mrs. Well's son
became legally the Count "Wells de
Lavallctte, and, having married the
daughter of M. Ilouher, Minister of
State, ho was recommended by the
Government to one of the rural dis
tricts, as a candidate for tho Chamber,
and elected.
