present 'in this ulty iteming boy named
George Henry Sylvester, who hns spout
the most of I1I9 1l since. 1 tJOI , among
the Snake, Cheyenne nml Sioux In
(liatm. His father timl family live at
the Dalles or in that vicinity. In 180il
while crossing the plains from Illinois
to this ooit-rt, nml while eneatnped on
tho Ilumbohlt river, the hoy George
was suddenly missing, tho parents con
jecturing rightly that tho Snake In
dians had stolon him. Ho has not n
dolinitc rceolleetion of tho circumstan
ces of tho capture beyond tho fact that
tho Indians seized and hurried him off,
nntl kept him for about two year,
treating him as well as is in the nature
of an Indian to do. Ho wa then
traded to tho Cheyennes for two horses,
and remained with that tribe as near
as ho remembers, about a year, when
ho was asrain traded by them to the
'Sioux for one Itorso. This occurred
some time in 1804. He remained among
the Sioux till just before Christmas, in
1600. Dunne that time bauds to
which ho successively belonged, ranged
and hunted tho Smoky Hill, Arkansas
river, Hopubliean fork, etc. Though
in a manner accustomed to Indian life,
ho oltcn felt a desire to escape from
them and return among tho whites,
but never had nn opportunity to do so
till the time above mentioned. Ileiug
sent out on horseback to watch a band
ol horses, ho concluded to make the
nttompt to get away, and accordingly
started toward .Tulesburg, riding for a
whole day and night at the utmost
possible speed. His horso finally drop
ped down exhausted and died, when
lie took his way on foot. During the
trip, ho had no food except the carrion
ol an o.x which he found dead, uud a
crow which ho contrived to kill. Dur
ing tho nights he was compelled to
build fires to keep away tho gray
wolves which Hocked close around,
Hiiarling nud barking, and impatient
for their prey. He describes tlii'K'
nights as most horrible; doubly so
becaiifo the iires built to keep away
tho wolves, increased tho danger ol
his recapture by tho Indians whom he
supplied to be in pursuit. Whim with
in about lllty miles ol .Tulesburg, he
encountered n soldier who took him in
custody supposing him to be an Indian
boy or girl, either lost or sent as a spy.
lleing taken to Omaha, u Mildier wa
found who could talk tho Sioux Inn.
' guage, to whom George related his hi
tory. Col. King then scut him to St.
Louis, where the facts of his captivity
nudicscapo were published in the news
papers, with n
view to tlio disco. cry
Tnf his relatives. An undo residing in
Illinois read tho ndvertiemeuts, went
to St. Louis nud took the boy home
with him, and informed ii father of
his recovery, llefore, however, hi
father had been heard Irom, George
got sick and became dUsutislicd, and
running away went to Fort Laramie
and theic enlisted in the 2d U. S. Cav
alry. Through Senator Corbett's in
fluence hit was soon niter discharged
-from tho scrvico with a view to hi-, re
turn to his parents. However, instead
of returning home, ho ran away again
early in 18(17, and went and joined the
Sioux under tho chieltaincy of "Spot
ited Tail." Ho stayed with this baud
three months when ho split off from
the band with sixteen lodges nnd two
.hundred Indians, by whom ho was
chosen as their chief. The Indian
called him "Littlojohn," or in their
own dialect, " Wnhcotcho." Ho pur
Bucd hunting nnd trapping with his
tribo until tho beginning of winter,
when he started with his buffalo robes
and furs, to what is now 3It."MoI'hcr
mii. On the way he froze his hands and
foot badly, uud in consequence of this
concluded to give up his wild nud lov
ing life. Ho accordingly made his way
to his iiuolo's, who persuaded him to
como to his parents in Oregon. He
arrived here, u passenger by the steam
"or Ajax, and is now awaiting tho open
ing of tho Colombia river, to go to the
Dalles. 'George is quito an intelligent,
bright boy, speaks his native tongue
but brokenly, and lias evidently been
long enough with tho Indians to no
quiro their restless and adventurous
spirit. Whether his return to the
whites is to bo permanent, is a little
problematical, though timo and homo
associations may eventually lead him
back to his own proper nature. .Much
of his personal experiences nud adven
tures wo Jinvo omitted for want of
