.if m w ,i sir (From (ho -Uhsnj Jcuresl.) Enthusiastic Meeting of the Al banr Grtuit Club-Tlic Ilnll Crowded-' The New Nation.'' Last Saturday evening was the oc casion of another outporiug of nntion al feeling by the loyal citizens of Al bany and vicinity. Jy request of tlio Grant Club, CAi'viy 1$. McDonald Ed itor of the Unionist, had consented to bo present on that evening, to de liver a lecture njion "The New Na tion." The Club made every prepara tion for the reception of n largo audi ence, as also securing the adjuncts of both instrumental and vocal music. The Albany Ilrass Hand played a num ber of national airs while the audience were convening; nnd proceeding the lecture, the Harmonic Quartette Glee Club accompanied on the melodion, whereat u beautiful young lady prcsid cd sang a patriotic song. The President of the Club, E. F. Urn. skll, Esq., then came forward and in troduced Mi:. McDonald to the audi ence, by whom he was received with enthusiasm. The lecturer opened his subject by passing before the mind a panoramic view of our national history from the lauding of the Pilgrims, the settlement of Jamestown, and the pall of slavery covering the fairest portion of the laud, to the point where the "sum of all villainies "made open war upon civilization. It is impossible hew to convey to the reader the word pictures which the fervid nnd classic sentences of the lecture presented ; his tory, poetry, and political philosophy all contributed to thu theme. Wu were next led to the battle-fields and prison-pens of the South; to the desolate hearths and tears throughout the loyal North and West; the urina tion of our President by instrumental ity nnd connivance of rebel sympathiz ers everywhere; treason now in the Executive olllce; nnd the duty of the hour. Here every word seemed a flash of lightning wielded by the Genius of Liberty herself. The audience were divided between being iiupassiouately still to catch the slightest tones of the speaker, nnd the alternately bunting forth of eufuricd applause accompanied by the waving of a hundred handker chief by the loyal ladies present. The Ophidian party has received such a scathing by all that is classic in thought nnd invective, as few but Milton has known how to embody before. Those of them present began a leaving; and from what wait dinning in their ears, wo feel assured that their dreams led along lurid el id's nnd dismal deeps, and if they are conscientious, their slumbers will not be disturbed for a mouth. The "new nation" is now great, strong and treo; still her patriotic sous have a further conflict with the giant Wrong next fall; but under the leader ship of him that took Jlichmnud, we will march to victory, and the results ami ideas secured by our four years' coulliet will be secured to ourselves and posterity forever. Mil. McDonald concluded amidst n perfect ovation ; and hero wo ntlirm that for poetic imagery, patriotic fer vor, clothed "thoughts that breathe and words that bum," this lecture is equal to any production upon the same subject prepared by an American pen. Thero were nearly five hundred per sons present, about one-fourth of whom were ladies. It is strango that many persons feel Iittlo concern in the matter of paying small debts. "Straws show which wav tho wind blows," is a homelv proverb; and a man who neglects to scttlo minor bills should not complain if his trustworthiness be questioned at a time when good (standing would be of tho utmost service to him. If a small debt bo due, thero is no oxcue for neglecting its pnyment. .1 A youth who desired to wear the matrimonial yoke had not sullicieut courage to pop tho question. On in forming his father of the dillieulty he labored under, tho old man replied quite passionately : "Why, you booby, how do you sup pose I got married ?" "Oh, yes!" said tho promising lover, " you married mother, but 1'vo got to marry a strango girl I" Flows ! Plows ! Br cases often each or set up.
