Tlio lute raise of Jackson creek causes uncmsiiiess to property holders within reach ol, the in'iul freaks of tho stream. The sub ject of break water) is being very gen erally canvassed throucli town; some advocating a special tax for that pur pose, while others think the thing should be dono by subscription. It is estimated that it will require from $1,000 to $1,500 to complete thu sys tem already commenced. If this amount cannot bo raised by subscrip tion, we arc of opinion that taxation should be resorted to rather than the work should go undone. It has been ascertained by a tedious course of ex periment, that a system of breakwa ters can be built which will be a cer tain protection to the town ; and wo think that it is folly for the town to fail to perform a peicc of work because it requires tho outlay of a few dollars. This protection from thu ravages of tho water has become one of magni tude, so much so, that the property holder.') are not equal to the task ol uoiitroliug it. Wiscteu Am csnansT. Last Thurs day morning when tho ground was covered with snow, young America was out in all his pomp and glory. Snow balls flew in all directions and at all object-). Nor was the mania entirely confined to tho young; for wo heard that somo of (he ladies, thinking no doubt that their gentleman friends did not liuvu the virtue of clean faces imfllciently impressed upon their blinds, went into tho snow-balling mid face washing buiim-ni rather extensively. "Ax Acknowi.i:iioi:ii Institution. " Jiroicn's JJronviial 2'rocic" are among tho acknowledged intitutions of thu laud. What would om minis ters, our lecturers, our lawyers, do without these invaluable Troches? To what niiamouut of " ahem" and throat clearings would we bo all subjected, were it not for thno all-powerful and soothing lozenges? lie have tried thrill, nnil they did in good. Xtx York Wtirerli. a Fini: Stock. Wo stepped into Mr. IVeatcr's broom factory, on the corner ol Oregon and Main St reels, yesterday, and saw him working some of the Ore gon raised corn. He was making his lamest class brooms, yet the straw was mi long that a part of the butt had to be cut oil. This straw makes a far su perior broom than if it were shorter. Tin: Wi:atiii:k. The weather thi week has been quite rough. It rained Tuesday and Wednesday, and on Thursday morning miiitv lay on the ground to the depth of two and u half inches. It lay on all day in town, but in tho country the ground was bare before night. Laiioh J'aiitv. TIip :irty at Veil Slintz's Hall 011 Now Year's Kvo was tlio largest of the season, there having been slxty-llireo tlekets solil.
