A week or two bIiicc, Mr. Joseph Samples, well known i this community h n very pretty pample of tlio Bcnllnwng, took uiito himself n wife. Ho had secured tlio nflections of ft too confiding tody in Josephine county, nnd tlio tvrnin wcro innilooiic. Unppily roso tlio honey moon, nnd everything wns lovely, until matlnm heenmo BiispioioiiB that Joseph's allegiance was legnlly due to another woman, living in Marion county. Ar riving in Jacksonville, she immediately nsccrtaincd, by telegrnph, that the faithless Joseph had n wifo living at Scio, in Linn County, who would liko to ho rid of the gay deceiver but couldn't. Returning homo to Jose phine, tlio new Mr. Samples met her loving lord, and pouring on him a tor rent of Invective, Mich ns Is peculiar to an enraged woman, made him lcavo in a hurry. Poor Joel loving not wisely but too many, should ho bo again seen in these parts, ho may find himself in tlio tender embrace of that new shackle, just made to tho order of Slicrill Owen, nnd ultimately bo intro duced to somo high dignitaries of State, at Salem, lleturn, Joseph! come back I notices from tho press and fame await thee. m A "Titrsrr." Mr. J. Sachs, of the firm of Sachs llros., appeared in our office nt an early hour yesterday mom jig, bearing in bis hand n box of fine JIavana cigars. Of course wo tried tliem, and nmid tho clouds of fragant smoke, thanked the donor nnd wished him nil manner of possible nnd impossi ble blessings. Ike informed us that they hnvo n largo invoice of the most choice brands of cigars nnd tobacco that they had given up all thoughts of running for ollicc, mid nil hopes of marrying, nnd had determined to hence forth devoto thoinsolves to tho philan thropic purpose of disposing of their stock to dealors, at prices ho low as to "astonish tho oldest inhabitant." 1)i:sciuitivi: Catai.ociuhs and 1'am rnurrs. "Wo from time- to timo re ceive numbers of catalogues from man ufactoru and venders of various articles, fur which wo aru thankful. Tho sup position is that tho scudon desiro a no tice of their various wants, but wo fail to sco nny particular profit that will accruo to us or our patrons, ns it is hut seldom that such are accompa nied with nnndveitiscmcnt. Wo how ever suggest that such ciruulars ho no companlcd with n "greenback," in which easo wo will cheerfully devote a "square" to the notice of such article as may be oll'orcd for sale. I'iiowkctimi. Mr. Dillon, from Jo soph'mo county, informs us that Col. liutteriield is sinking shafts in tho ce ment beds, about n half a milo this side of Wnldo. Tho Colonol's inten tion is to go down until ho strikes tho bed-rock, hoping that ho will find a layer of pay gravel between tho cement bed nnd the bed-rock. Somo years since, Mr. Samuel Scott sunk through tho fo ment, lower down on tho Hat, and got good, pay; but whether liko results will bo realized in tho gulch, remains lo bo demonstrated. 'kw Gu.ns, Mr. Miller, gunsmith, has just received an invoice of now goods, among which is a now stylo ot tlio Henry llillu, a now Spencer Hille, ami sovoral now vnrioties of revolvers and pistols. II0 also has a largo nnm tor of tho IJallnrd guns. Mr. M. U enterprising and keeps fully up with tlio times In tlio introduction of tho latest nnd best patonts of firo arms. All thoso desiring anything In his lino should givo him a call. Livkly Timks. On Thursday, ton or cloven teams arrived with goods, from Crcscont City, nearly overy largo hotiso in town recoiving a consignment. California Street wns thronged, nnd busy with tho wprk of unloading, which mado tho town unusually lively. Only a small portion of tho fall stock has been received yet, and itis a puzzle what becomos of tho largo amount of goods shippqd to this point. Jf kw AnvjiitTjs khunt. Messrs. Mul lor & Urontano, havo a now advertise went this week, but this is not all tho 'low things thoy havo, for their storo is "lied with a very larco stook of tho latest and most fashionablo styles of feuuus. uiatomcrs nro invited ,to call nd sco for thomsolvep. DANOEitoys ExmuiiKNT. Mr. John 1 "tterson's team ran away this wepk, short dUtanco from town, and camo Wr breaking Mrs.Ps arm. Douglas Co. Correspondence. Rosnnuno, Sept. 0th, 1807. L. T. Thompson and n young Miss "Wright, of Cole's Valley, in this conn ty, mysteriously disappeared on tho 27th tilt., creating quito a sensation in tho neighborhood. T. P. Sheridan, and family, returned from tho Atlantic States, on tho 00th, after an nbsenco of several months. They were passengers on tho ill-fated Santiago Do Cuba, nnd wcro thrown ashoro on tho Jersey coast. Deaths among children arc of quito frequent occurrcnco in this valley, nnd nro generally caused by whooping cough. Thcro is a largo nmount of business being dono in this vnllcy tho present season. Heavy freight wagons arc ar riving and departing every day. The rich silver leads in tho moun tninsbctwecn thcWillamctto nnd Ump qua rivers arc still attracting consider able attention. Somo specimens brought in to-day certainly contain a vast amount of mineral substnnco of some kind, which resembles gold and Bilvcr. Tho Democracy had a drunk last Fridny night, over tho news of tho Cnlifornin election. Their noisy frolics nro of common occurrcnco in this town, but this is the first excuso they havo made for their midnight revels. Ilcv. D. C. Ilnyncs, a traveling clcr gymnn from tho Knst, was in this place Sunday last, and preached an elcgnnt sermon to a largo congregation. In the evening ho preached a sermon for tho benefit of tho frced-men whites and blacks of tho South ; but a cer tain portion ol his congregation with drew, and for a timo appearances indi cated that evil wns contemplated by those who, under tho pica of fun, are ever ready to do mischief to those traveling strangers whoso business calls them temporarily among us. -- TJio Nntlonnl Debt. When tho Volunteer forco of the army ot tho United States waB disband ed in 1 805, the Secretnry of the Treas ury announced that tho National Debt, exclusive of the cash in the Treasury, amounted to (2,707,80U,080 01. On the first inst., two years and one month aior the first announcement was made, Secretary McColloch reports tho debt to bo 6L,ini!,7fln,a05 05 n difTi.n'iwo of &205,o:!0,!l'Jl 80. This dillerenee is tho amount by which tho public debt has been reduced, and it is a t-howiug beyond anything that has ev er been known. Wo nro actually pay ing oil' the debt nt tho rate of $10,000, 800 per month. At this rate it will tako only ten years to cancel the whole amount. Hut wo hope to do even bet ter than this when tho expensive war on tho Plains is brought to a termina tion, and tho Southern States hhall have regained their former prosperity, so that they can help dischargo the debt. Tho Oreom'tn in speaking of this subject, says : Thcro aro thoso who, for small polit ical purposes, tako cvory opportunity to exaggerate tho burdens of the debt, and even to nst-ort that it can never be pnid. Unscrupulous nowspapors of a partisan ehnracter otten dcelarif. tlie debt to be twice as large as' it really is, and endeavor to lead their readers into n belief that "tho party in power" is still idling now heights upon the , mountain ot debt with no expectation or desiro of paying it. Of couie iu-i tulligout people will not bo deceived by theso statements; but tho readers of this sort ot journals nre not always of tho most intelligent clnss. This is simply one of tho methods whereby men who havo designs on plaeo nnd power plav upon tho prejudices of tho ignorant t'o accomplish their purposes. Hardly moro than a week ago wo found nu Oregon editor gravely or mthor, imputleutiy, arguing uii.v wu """Ti cals nover intended to pay tho debt, though thoy havo been paying it nt tho nvorago rnto ol tnrco iiiiiuhcu mm uuj thousand dollars a day ever sinco tho close of tho war. It is tho delight of this class of writers to delude thoso who nro so unfortunate ns to bo their readers into tho belief that tho debt, under tho management of " tlw party in power," will bo a perpetual incum brance upon tho industry of tho coun try, hoping thoreby to produco a dis content which will redound to tho ad vantage of their party. The favorable statements which nro inndo from timo time, showing a steady reduction of tho debt, would completely discomfit nny set of men less brazen or uuscru Ions than they; but observation has shown that tho,so writers will stick at nothing in tho shapo either of nigen ious misstntomont or positive falsehood which thoy think themselves nblo to turn to party advantage Ckoss-WaUvS. Mr. M. A. Horry is now having tho ilag-stoucs for tho street crossings quarried, brought into town nnd doposited at tho various poiuts where thoy aro to bo laid down. Don't Take too Much Cnnnrr. Tho Democracy throughout tho Stato aro rejoicing and making great demon strations, over what they arc pleased lo term a "Democratic victory" in California. This is an entire mistake. Thcro was1 no victory gained in Cali fornia by tho Democrats at tho lato election. It was a Union failure. The Democracy could no moro havo suc ceeded at the lato election than thoy could at Richmond, in tho spring of 'OS, when Grant was after them. All the California papers concur in saying that not moro than two-thirds of tho Union strength was called out on tho day of election. When such a stato nflairs existed, it is not nt all surprising that the Union party failed. "Wo think it altogether probablo that at the com ing Judicial election in Califamin, the now exultant Democratic party will bo hurled from its elevated position, and mado to tako the back scat it has occupied for tho last fivo years. "We feel confident that such will bo the case if tho Union party only docs its duty. Tub Book Knr.rmts. We stepped into Mr. Wade's commercial school during tho past week, and found the class progressing finely; in fact were so much pleased that wo determined to make one of their number. Mr. W. is a fine book keeper, not only has the theory but hashad the practice, and pos sesses the faculty of making himself understood. " o do not sco nnv rea Kin why our young men dioulil seek further for the opportunity to get a good, practical knowledge ol this busi ness. They will certainly never get it cheaper, and wo adviso eery man and everv youth, that can, to avail himself of this golden opportunity to acquiron thorough knowledgo of tliis important branch of business. Mr. Yandall informs us that tho yellow jackets can all bo destroyed or driven nway from nny house, in from one to two days, by procuring a piece of rabbit or deer meat, fresh nnd raw, and exposing it where these insects can got at it conveniently. This nttraets yellow jackets more than anything else, from tho fact that it is very tend der ; when it is covered with them, pour on scalding water. Mr. Yandall states that he has H'cn this plan tried once this f-cason, and frequently, in 'fl:i-5 nt which time llic.io ports were so num erous that they were nn absolute Plagm. and it 'always met with suc cess. joiiN f.' zioiuck, PRACTICAL Wnlclimnkcr nnd Jeweler!
