QAULT, EDITOK, Satummay 3Ior.Ni.vo, Suit. 14, 1807. Central Oregon, It is sometimes profitable to compare the prosperity, general resources ami wealth of one part ofa State anil coun try with that of another. In our re cent visit to tho "Willamette- Valley we paw much that was uulookcd for, and many things wo expected to ceo were not visible. Tho internal improve ments arc superior to what we expect ed, while agriculture, tho great foun dation to a State's prosperity and wealth, seems to languish, or, at least, Is not pursued with that vigor and per tinacity which wo of Jackson county are accustomed to see. The farms in tho Willamette, for tho most part, do not have that tidy and thrifty appear ance that one would like to witness. The fences need resetting or rebuilding; the houses and outbuildings should feel the jar of the carpenter's hammer; tho orchard's look as though the plow niul pruning knifo were total strangers to them, while full half ot tho cultiva table land remains untitled. The Wil lamette valley produces a surplus, but just enough to bo a botheration. If thousands of bushels of grain were raised whero hundreds now are, tho market would' bo bettor, for induce ments would then tie held out to for eign tradors and merchants to come hero and purchue. An it is now, ves sels coming into tho port of Portland, arc unable to get a cargo of exports without much delay; hence, their com ing is at long intervals. "What middle Oregon 'o wants is, such an amount of produce that tho regular steamers shall not only be kept constantly employed but also sail vessels. Then will Ore gon grow in wealth and importance. That this thing may bo brought about, wo not only need a greater pop ulation, but a greater stimulus to labor. Iloth theso things will follow the in creased facilities of transportation; hence, tho groat want of a railroad. Hut had we, of this county, the same transportation as tho Northern coun ties, wo would mako I'oguo Itiver val toy a perfect garden. If tho people of that portion of tho State complain of eight and ten dollars per ton for trans portation of freight, what would they say if they had to pay eighty or ninety dollars, as wo do? Yet, with all those drawbacks, Roguo llivor valley has more outward appearaucos of prosper ity than tho Willamette, leaving out her manufactures. Tho towns, with perhaps two or threo exceptions, do not necm to be improving. Portland lias grown faster than tho demands of the surrounding country seem to have warranted. The Northern trade has either failed or been drawn into other channel; to that Oregon's metropolis will now ceaso growing until tho surrounding country, its truo support, shall have reached tho city's present level. Jiaiiufacturosol various kinds arc be ing carried on with success "and profit. Tho greatest of theso is the lion Works at Oswego, which is tho only establish inent of tho kind on tho Pacific Coast. With tho present facilities, about 20, 000 pounds of pig iron is turned out per day. This enterprise will not only prove a great benefit to tho corpora tors, but to tho whole State. CJiviug tho Willamette valley all tho advantages over claimed or boasted for it, with tho exception of tho singlo item of transportation, and wo of Jack ton, Jo&cphino and Douglas counties can far surpass fliat portion of tho State. 1'or wo have ledges ot iron, coal, limestone, marble, copper, and gold-bearing quartz, besides great beds of free gold, as well as springs ol soda, sujphcr and salt water, and our agri cultural and pastural lands, our forests of timber and our water power cannot bo surpassed. Tho climato and natu ral scenery of this end of tho Stato has not its erpial perhaps on tho continent. Give Southern Oregon a railroad, and in a low years it will bo worth looking at. "White iMnn's Government." As "n whito man's government" is tho particular hobby of Democracy, and California has just decided in fa vor of Democracy, we of courso ex pect to see that party devoted to the interests of whito men. Wo expect to sco a "whito man's government," par excellence, administered. Wo expect a moral, social and political purifica tion of our sistcrStatc. As Democra cy is responsible for tho advent of tho Asiatic race that curses tho Pacific Coast, wo expect that party to provide fully and speedily for its exodus. What a splendid "cartoon" the exo dus would make! Far in tho back ground, the snowy Sierras, already pierced for the great railroad, by tho blows ot Chineso laborers the genius of Democracy standing on the summit, frowning a terrible frown, armed with tho traditional lash, and driving the dusky swarms of Mongolian innovators to tho sea, for tho crime of labor. Near by, the great railroad tunnel crumbling into decay, and in tho foreground the rusting machinery of a half finished lo comotive. At last tho Mongolian problem is to bo solved. Tho wnh-houscs of Cali fornia arc to be emptied of disgusting Asiatics, and tho announcement that "washing and ironing is done here, by Joe. Drown, or John Smith," will re- plaeo the mysterious hieroglyphics of img I' oo and Chu Sow. The Pacific llailroad will bo built witli white la bor, or not at all ; and the gleanings of California gold fields bo harvested at some future timo by white men, when Democracy has starved them down by Free Trade, so that four-bits a day will be a blessing. All this wo fully ex pect, and as Democracy claims to be always truo to its pledges, it suiely must come to.pass without thatpartv should decide to strengthen itself by giving "John" tho ballot, and thus crushing out tholastvctigoofUcpubli eaiiNui, and proving that great is the mission of Democracy. J.ct the Majority Itule. Acquiesanco in tho will of tho ma jority is a Depublican principle. A majority, not of the voters of California, hut of thoso who choso to express themselves by tho ballot, have just de cided to-givo tho control of tho Stato government to the Dcinocratio party, and every good citizen must oboy tho will of tho people. Wo have every reason to believe that tho llcpublicans of California will bo perfectly quiescent anil accept with equanimity, a result that they certainly had tho power to prevent. Wo have not tho least fear that Alcatraz will bo stormed by the defeated politicians. Wo havo no alarm that tho contents of tho Mint and Custom llouso will bo seized by disappointed otlico scekurs, or that any effort will be made to precipitate the people into rebellion. Wo would be glad to havo assurance that triumphant Democracy, Hushed by an imaginary political victory, will not appropriate the government property in California to their own use, seize Alcatraz ami Fort Point, and declare California tho key stone of the Pacific Itciniblic. We confess an anxiety on this point. Wo havo seen what Democracy was willing to do when beaten and discomflttcd at every point, and wo have no reason to suppose that their temporary lease of power will not bo used with unbridled license. 11 JJciiiocraoy will only as sure us that California will bo allowed to stay in the Union, and that tho prop erty of the general government will be respected by the party coming into power, wo will feel less uneasy, and succumb to tho will of tho majority without a murmur. ... -r MM .1.. A MILLION MOKE. ft country lloaiil of Trustees. Si:iTi:inn:i:,Otli. A special meeting of the Doard of Trustees was held this nve. All the members were present except Mr. Love. The meeting being called to order by tho President, Mr. Linn, and the journ al of the proceedings ot the last meet ing read and approved, the President stated that tho Doard was called to gether to take soiiio action upon the matter of cross-walks, as it appeared that, although tho contract had been awarded, the required bond had not been filed, and tho work had not pro- gntesud. Mr. Deiry, to whom thocon- tract had been awarded, being present, made a satisfactory explanation to tho Doard, after which tho Doard amend ed the.-pecilications for the cross-walks, by specifying that the Hag-stones to bo laid down should bo not lens than three inches thick, in plaeo of four iuchc, as originally provided tho contract to bo finished in sixty days from this time, and a sufficient bond to bo filed. Tho Doard then authorized Mr. Derry to lay a three-foot cross-walk, of Hag stone, across Fifth St., from Greeiiinan's to Mentor's comer, as this walk had been omitted. Ordinance 3 1, to amend Ordinance 33, was parsed, reducing tho width of side-walks to six frot on California St., above Third, and on Or egon St., except .that part lying bo tween California and Main. Ordinance (33) passed, eutitliiug the Town Attorney to tho samo fees as tho Prosecuting Attorney is allowed by law, in prosecutions lor misdemeanor. before a Justice of tho Peace in cases of conviction. Tho bills referred to tho Finance Com- mittco at tho previous nicetim? woro not reported upon. A warrant for $25 coin, for tho Town Attorney's second quarterly sala ry, was ordered. On motion, Doard adjourned. D. LINK', President. U. S. Haydu.v, Decorder. Mixkk Ui When tho Democrats were rejoicing on Tuesday evening, one ot them, who seemed quite active, ttirew up his hat and sung out, " three cheers for Gorham." They were given heartily, when one of the sachems, per ceiving tho mistake, called out lustily, "threo cheers for Ilaight," to which tho crowd did not respond; probably, because Ilaight used to bo a "Dlaek," and is now considered a very shaky Democrat. Tin: Hay Coxtijact. The largo con tract to supply Fort Klamath with 370 tons of hay is being rapidly filled. Henry Klippcl, Col. Doss and J. N. T. Miller aro each running a reaper. James Kilgore, who lias asuli-contract for baling, is busy with nine bauds, and oven with that force, cannot keep up with the reapers. The above parties are all comfortably camped near Wood river, auoiu inreo miles Irom the Pot, and expect to comploto tho work in about three weeks. Foist Klamath. We learn that this post is garrisoned with only 35 men, under Lieutenant Iloudoreon. Lieut. Tho move ments of this party appearing some what strange, (they being armed with muskets,) Marshal Keelcr with his Dep uty, Mr. Peter Itiilliicr, continued to follow them, until at last ho had per suaded them to return to camp, which thoy apparently pretended to do. When they got on tho street leading towards tho Garrison, somewhere in j tho rear of Col. Gates' residence, they commenced firing otV their, muskets. Marshal Kcclor in company with his Deputy, proceeded towards the shoot ing and when in the supposed neigh borhood, lie called to them, but receiv ed no answer. Ho then proceeded on, his Deputy remaining a short distance hi tho rear, when suddenly ho was hail ed with "halt, who comes there?" ho j replied, "tho .Marshal of Dalles City." Tho soldier then said "halt, or I'll shoot," Tho Marshal replied, "Oh, no, you won't shoot," and continued to walk towards the man, and when with in about eight or ten feet, the fatal shot was fired. The man, with several oth ers, then ran towards the Garrison, tho Deputy firing several shots at them as they retreated. Mr. Dull'iicr ran to tho aisistauco of our Marshal, whose last words were " what will my poor wifo and children do."
