1SMAS TlWir.S OF OltKGOS
In the sub-report of Mr. Xesmith ac
companying the report of the Congres
sional Committee on the condition of
the Indian tribes of the United States
an estimate is presented of the number
of Indians in Oresron, together with a
variety of observations upon theircon
dilion'mid management. The number
at the Silet7. Agency i computed at
two thousand; at Grande Hondo Agen
cy, at one tliou-aud and sixty-four; at
Warm Springs Agency, at ono thou
sand and H'vcnty: nt Umatilla Agency,
tit seven hundred and fifty-nine. The
Snakes Klamath and Modoc in South
e:iterii Orecoii. comprising what uie
known ns the untamed tribes, are mi-
were removed from that place to South
eru Oregon. ThoKoguo luor Indians
then numbered flvo thousand. The
two thousand now nt Siletz Agency
are tho only remnants of theso bands.
Mr. Xesmith recommend that tho In
dians ut the Grande Hondo Agenoy bo
removed to Siletz, "where they Could
he moro easily and better provided for,
until such timo as the diseases with
which they aro now so universally in
fected shall result in their total extinc
tion." Ilo adds that "at Siletz there
is ainplo room for these people; by
their being incorporated with the tribes
now there, tho services of ono agent
and several employes might be dispens
ed with. The Government would also
bo relieved of tho expense of keeping
up a military post and garrison, m is
now done at their piescnt location."
Theso are practical sucgcKtions, nnd
should bo acted upon. Of tho Umatil
hi Hescrration. Mr. iscHinith says:
I
tlm Tthin rountaiiis. leiideriiig a con
fliet between tho Indians and reckless
white persons imminent ut any mo

ing removed, and the amount of money
expended in opening farms and build

forbid nny attempt in that direction at

) This sehcine is no doubt the pro
po
sition of somo ono more deeply interest
ed in tho value of a small propeity of
his own, than in the wcltaro either ol
the country nt large or of the future
ownersoftlie proposed railroad. Aide
from the benefit which it would be to
a very few individuals, there can be no
motive for a diversion of this kind.
Tho country through which tho Ore
gon military" road pas"es is mostly
mountainous districts, or barren wastes
and stony regions- millt for agricultu
ral pursuits. There is littlo to invite,
in tlic way of furnishing freight, even
in the remote future on that route.
On this route, the entire way from
tho Willamette valley to California
lies through a rich and'enltivated coun
try. The valleys of the Umpipiii and
Untitle Hiver. are in no respect inferior
to an equal area of the best portion of
the illnmette valley.
The principal need of n railroad
through this country is to form a di
rect and speedy communication with
San Francisco, which is, and ever will
be, the Queen city of the commerce of
tue est, aim ii a nuu snmim pro
ceed from Portland to Kugene, and
then branch oil' over the Cascade moun
tains, still there must and will be a
line from California, intersecting these
valleys, and connecting with that at
some point in the Willametto vnlley.
The grading on this .route will be far
less than ou the proposed diversion.
Altogether, the proposition appears
quite impracticnMc, itm, will iiniliiiilit

road contractors. Rwlntrj ICniyn.
THE SHIP OF DEATH.
.Since the time when the Ancient

A year ago she left tho Shetland on

Ten men, of whom tho Captain was

A thing of beauty is n-juy forever, of
which tint lire tho openi severally

Mississippi editor.
The opera is u thing which is never
enjoyed unless it is heard. It is none
ol'tlioso promiscuous musical arrange
ments which is never understood un
less it is duly appreciated. In order
to oxpeiienee'it eli'eotually, a libretto,
an opera glass, a well dressed lady and
a clean shiit are necessary. o ob
tained all these ut immense expense,
and went. On looking nt tho back of
our libretto wo saw tlmt tho opera on
this occasion was "Krnauny." On
looking through our glasses "at the
stnge, wo saw a sentiinentnl look
ing bushwhacker standing on a Hinall
mountain, with several more bush
whackers at tho bottom. Having asked
the old lady, of whom wo were tho
escort or, who that was on tho mountain,
and nho having replied " Krnanny" in
the atliriuative, wo wero morally con
vineed that'll was tho opera of "Lilian
ny" before whom wo were arrayed in
our paper collar glory.
Tho orchestra struck up liko four
hundred torn cats in a back alley, anil
a brindlo cur flog chained to tho gar
den palings on a sweet moonlight night'
in April, and tho bushwhackers at tho
foot of tho mountain nil ol a sudden
commenced to shako expensivo silver
goblets in tho soil Italian air, and hol
ler bravoro, and play drawn poker ou
tho rocks, and sing hymns to " Kr
nanny" on tho top of tho mountain,
wlio linally relaxed his sentiniental ex
pression, and saim ""t! "This is the
(trandrcri) Opcnro Moxicanccro Do
Rio .Inmrio by Vigo," ami ho camo
down from tho mountain, and mingled
freely with thu common high privuto
bushwhackers, and they all stood on
their tip toes and tiiod to tiing louder
than each other; hut nt last the man
with the big ted fiddle played foul ou
the high private bushwhackers and
quit playing to give " Krnanny" a
chance, who forthwith jumped on a
rock nud sang: " Brawn) eavnArrn, I
