Wo take tho following rctninisencc of Grave Creek, in Josephine county, from the correspondence of the Pacific, Christian Advocate, and as many of our lenders, no doubt, remember the circumstances, it will be read witli in tcrcst as nn historical fact: Grave Crock derived its name from the following melancholy circum stances: A "family bv the name of Croloy, belonging to which was n young lady whoso Christian name was Leland, was moving into Oregon, nud while de scending the mountain front the south toward the creek, in a wagon, the young lady, who had been ill for some time, breathed her last. I lor stricken father dug her a lonely gravo on the banks of this creek, nntl leveling down the dirt, corraled his cattlo upon the grave so as to hide it from the eye of the Indians, who were in the habit of disinterring the botliesofnlltho whites oi wnose graves w.ey . mi nil, k u tho cofllns of whatever clothing they mav contain. Hut tlio precautious ot the anxious friends were of no avail The savages found tho grave, dug up the dead body, and having accomplish ed their purpose, left the remains to moulder upon the surface ot tho earth. Sometime after this n brother of the young Indy passed through tho vnlley, and found the grave re-opened and the bones of his beloved sister blenching in tho sun. Thcso ho gathered up nntl interred in nnothcr place, and supposed ho had made the grave secure. But again they were dug tip, either by si ages or wild beasts, and bv fiininllv hands were buried the third time, while Ihe original grave from which tho In dians had first removed the cnflln re mained open, without an occupant. This occurred in 1810. In 1830, a white man in attempting to pass through tho valley was beset by a corn- nan v of savages, roniieii. w-aipod, ami murdered, and left unbiiried. Soon nfter, n company of whito men came along and found tho dead body, dug n grave near by and buried it. The white men discovered Indians not far nway, and supposing them to be the munlerers.nttaekcd them, and took the I'lliei anil MX oilier iiiui.iiin ii 1-iuiv.ir. They took the precaution to bind the lirisoners, and then charged them with being tlio murderers of the man whose body they had buried. They dciicd the 'charge, but wcro told bvtlie white men that they mioiiIm hodl tlicm re sponsible for 'the erimo unless they rould deliver up tho roil miiid"ier-. It was proposed that two of the Indi ans should t:o and biing the guiltv ones iu, whilo the rest rhould be held ns liOKtiiifcs. They went and ictiirued alone. Tlio Indians held a ooiiMilta tion. ami by the request of the chief, the Indians'wero sent out a second time, but returned without tho iiiurlerci. As they reached tho camp the other Indians niadenunttempt tobieal; nway, and all but the chief succeeded so far as to get loo-c and run. The w bites had prepared for such nu emergency by having all their weapons i cad v for use, nud thev fired upon tho Intliann ns they ran. killing five of them, The chief was killed in tho hoitso whete tho Indians had been confined, by a man by the nnino of Simons, with whom he had a loni; rough and tumble fight be foro .Simons succeeded in mnsteiing him. It was thus that this strange double baptism ix-nilcied the gravo up on its banks so notorious ns to fasten its name upon the cieek. Tho people of this part of Josephine county, how ever, in connection with the Legislature of Oregon, with doubtful success, have endeavoied to re-christen this cieek with tho Christian namo of tlio ttnfortu nnto lady who first found a gravo up on its banks. - .
