, SHERIDAN'S RIDE.
The .following: Ijric was written by
TbomlsTBachanan Head, to be recited by
James E. Murdoch, the distinguished elo
cutionist, at a Complimentary Festival
given by Mr. Murdoch in Cincinnati, on
Monday evening. Oct. 31st, 1364, in ac
knowledgment of bis noble contribution"
for the aid of our sick and wounded sot
dicrs: Up from tie So'nth at break of'day.
Bringing to Winchester fresh dismay,
The affrighted air with a shudder bore,
Like a herald In baite.to the Cblcflatn'a door
The terrible grumble, and rumble, and roar,
Telling the bottle was on once more
And Sicridau twenty mile away t
And heavier Mill thoic billoni f war
Thundered along the borison's bar ;
And louder yet Into Winchester rolled
The roar of that red tea uncontrolled
Making the blood of the listener cold,
As he thought of the stake in tne fiery fray
And Snerldaa twenty miles away I
Bat there is a road from Winchester Town
A good broad highway leading down;
And there, thro' the Hush o( the morning
light.
A steed as black as the steeds of night
Was seen to pas, as with eagle's flight
As if he kuew the terrible need,
ITe stntcbed away with bts utmost speed.
Dill rose and fell, but his henrt was gay
With Sheridan Jtfltn miles away t
Still sprang from those swift hoofs, tbsn-
derlng south.
The dust, like the saoVe from the cannon's
mouth,
Or the trail of a cjraei sweeping faster and
faster.
Foreboding to traitor the doom of disaster.
The heart of the steed and the heart of
the master
Were beating, like prisoners assaulting their
walls
Every nerve of the charger wis strained to
full play
With Sheridan only ten miles away t
Under his spurning feet the road,
Like an arrowy Alpine river Cowed;
And the landscape sped away bebicd,
Like an ocean flying before the wind ;
And the steed, like a bark fed with fnmsee
Ire,
Swept on. with' his wild eyes full of firs.
But lo I hs is nearlnc his heart's desire,
HeissnuSng the imcke of the battle fray
With Sheridan onlyw miles away!
The lint that the General saw were the
group
Of stragglers, and then the retreating
troops.
What was done! What t do! A glance
told blm both;
Then striking his spurs, with a terrible
oatb,
Tie dashed down the line 'mid a storm of
huzzas.
And the wave of retreat checked Its course
"there, because
The sight of the Leader compelled It to
pause.
With foam and with datt the black charger
was gray.
By the &uh of bis eye and bis red nostril's
He seemed to the whole great army to ray,
'I have brought you Sheridan all the way
From Winchester down, to cave the day 1"
Ilurrab fbnrrah ! for Sheridan X
numb ! hurrah ! for horse and man !
And when their statutes are placed oa
high,
Under the dose of the Union sky
Tbs American soldiers' Temple or Fame
There, with the glorious General's cam.
Be is said In letters both bold and bright,'
Tiers Is the steed that saved the dsy,
By carrying Sheridan into the fignt
From Winchester, twsnty miles away P

We have heard that fiitythooacd of onr
bravest men were starved and tortured to
death in the bands of rebels. Twenty
jtara from now, this will form one of the
blackest pages in history, aed will be so
regarded by the civilized world. The
English still keep fresh the horror or the
Black Hole or Calcutta; but what wis
that, where a drunken jailor merely neg
lected to give sufficient air for a night to
a basdred or two prisoners, compared la
the systematic, designed murder by a peo
ple of thousands of their prisoners. The
victims of rebellion were starved and tor
tured ls death oy ioches, acd attrocities
were committed upon tbesu which it will
set do to came, wbicb even themselves
will never mention. S. F. Flag.
