THE OREGON SENTINEL Location of Klamath Fort. Kd. SmiNKti : In the Skntinm, of the Hist utt., there ia on article over the sig nature of " Clmuncey Nye," in regard to the locution of Port Klnmnth ; in which lie proposal to present a few facts In favor of its present locality. He has fallen into a great error In sur mising that mere supposition, or assertion, will be taken for tho few facts." His first proposition, that it will protect the travel on the new road, is not sustained ty any facts that he hus presented. It is stated, on tho authority of those who are Itest posted in the geography of the country, the new roud cannot be reached in less than fifty miles from the fort. Now what pro tection can a garrison at that dial unco af ford to travelers on the new road? Sup pose the Indians living on the upper lake, between tho fort and tho new road, how would the news be conveyed to the fort ? There is no road connecting them, nnd, if there was a rood made, would it not be im possible six months of the year ? If the new road is destined to bo the great thoroughfare over which the surplus products of this valley ore to be carried to market ; and Is going to " be traveled three times as much is all other ronds " let us havo tho fort exactly in the right place; immediately on tho road where travelers can krep the garrison Informed daily of the conduct of tho Indians on both etids of the rood. It would be small consolation to a person being robbed nnd scalped by sav ones to know Micro was a fort over the mountain, fifty mikfl distant. The " good road" opened by tho Govern ment from the Humboldt to Honey Lake Is a desert of 1G0 miles, entirely destitute ofcrrnss at the timo of year the emigrants pass over it. and nearly so at nil times of the year. The water is such as is usually found on deserts, warm, hot, or poisouous ; nnd the road litrallly lined with deadstock, decaying monuments to attest the " fact" that " the Government has opened a good road from the JIumboldt to Honey Lake." Thetravel worn emigrant, who Is bound for Oregon, can travel this " good Govern ment road " if he has the gold or green backs to pay for hay to feed his stock at The rate of from four to eight cents per pound, which were the prices this year, while the old road, abounding in grass und fine water, und by which Oregon can be lenchrd in a third less travel than tho road by Honey Lake, is held in a stato of block ndo by u band of squnllid savages living around Mud or Gnoso Lako, who havo plied more emigrant blood, and carried more women nnd children into an endless captivity than any other tribo on tho coast. Why did not Nyo bring his arguments of "costs" to bear against tho now road to the John Day mines, on the grounds that then; was already a good rond by way of the Dalles ; the reasoning would have been just as legitimate ; for tho roud from tho Dalles is no more circuitous than the Hon ey Lake road is to the Humboldt ? The reason appears to be in tho fact thnt it is the Nye (nigh) road, nnd the nearer a road is tho better, is good reasoning. The road from Honey Lako to Yreka is neither a good, nor a safe one. Tho writer knows thnt it is not a good road from per sonal observation ; und that it is not a safe one would be readily attested by two citi zens of this valley, who were robbed last summer, near Sheep Rock, while on their way to Washoe, by a war party of Mo docks. The proprietor of Pilgrim Camp, who wns robbed of everything he possessed by the samo party, would corroborate their testimony; and tho other men living iu Squaw valley, who wero robbed of every thing they hud, and then compelled to cook tor tho red devils, would swear to it. THero is a great difference between a "few facts" nnd what Mr. N. may think about the altitude of Klamath Post and the cross ing of Lost River. That both places havo altitudes is a fact; " but I think" is not a fact, nor one of a few facts. Nor is it one of "a few facts" that "it is very well known in this valley that it was through the representations of Col. Drew to the Department, that a fort was ordered to bo built in tho Klamath country." Accord ing to tho laws of nations, this last great fact belongs to Mr. N., by right of discov ery. Ho certainly is tho only individual in tho valley who pretends to know any thing nbout tho long und persistent effort that has becu made for years to tho War Department at Washington, tho various military rulers on this coast, and finally by joint resolution of the last Legislature, asking General Wright for the establish ment of a military post in tho Klamath Lake country, who would think of ascrib ing the honor nnd glory of the establish ment wholly nnd solely to Col. Drew. Kailroad Meeting.
