Wiiks it is Daiik. Tho following beau

Karl's Sketch Rook," entitled " The Night

derness : " It U dark when the honorable

years swept cruelly away by the knuvish,
heartless adversary. It is dark when he
sees the clouds of sorrow gather around,
and knows thnt tho hopes nnd huppiness of

that hour the memory of past integrity
will be a true consolation, and assure him
even here on earth, of gleams of light in

A Philadelphia correspondent wrote tho
following to N. Y., Tribtino :
Early this year the conscription fell up
on the Friends. In ono neighborhood, sonm
twelve of them were drnltcd. In nccoi
dnuco with their well known principles,
they refused to join the nrmy. But every
where the reign of terror prevailed, nnd
they weru forced into thu rauke. Here mm
kels were given to them but every man of
them refused even to touch the weapon-.
Every conceivable Insult and outrage was
heaped upon them ; they wero lied up, starv
ed and whipped. Still they remained firm
to their conscientious convictions, nml re
fused to light. Finally, the muskets were
actually strapped to their bodies.
One of these Friends was singled ont as
especially obuoxiou. nnd wns whipped un
mercifully. The olllcer in chnrgu was law
less nnd brutal, aud on one occasion order
ed him to be shot as an example to others.
He called out a lilo of men to shoot him.
While his executioners weru drawn up be
fore him, standing within twelve feet of
their victim, tho latter, raising his eyes to
heaven and elevating his hand, cried out
in a loud voice, " Father, forglvo them ;
they know not what they do." Instantl)
camu tliu order to fire. lint instead of
obeying it thu men dtopped their musketx
and refused, declaring they could not kill
such n man.
This refusal so enraged tho officer that ho
knocked his victim down in thu road, and
then strove repeatedly to trample him it
death under his horse's feet. Hut tho ani
mal crs!stcutly refu-ed to even step over
his prostrate body. In thu end they wero
marched with the rebel army to Gettysburg.
In thnt battle they remained entirely pas
sive, tired no shot, nnd in God alone trusted
for preservation. Very early in thu action
the officer referred to was killed. The
Friends, nil unhurt, were taken prisoners
and sent to Fort Dclewnrc. Here by acci
dent it became known in this city that sev
eral Friends weru among thu captured, and
two members of thu Society wettt down tu
inquire into the circumstance, but they'
were refused permission to see them. They
went Immediately to Washington, and them
obtained an order for their discharge, con
ditioned on their taking nu afllrination of
their allegiance. Tills opened tho prison
door. Thu atlirmatlon made, these martyrs
for conscience suku were release, and are now
here.
