tjU-H jfttmfr-tottjdg Sentinel. MAX MULLER, . RaCB HkTIVEK.V PdMPKY AND 'I'll K JoUK- nai. ok CoMMimoK. There Is broud humbr ns well as lulling logic in Henry Ward Becchcr's treatment of tlic negmphobia ol tlio Now York Journal of Commerce. lie i uys : The Journal of Commerce is disquieted beyond measure nt the prtispcct of ncgo rquality. No sentence can well be eon- '.Minuted in which the term Alrlc.m or no gio is introduced, which does not, to its ifcar, in some op-n or mysterious way scout to signify equality. Are slaves of rebels to bo enunoipatod? It is an attempt to . ni:il:c hlnvcs equal to white men 1 Aieour generals inclined to receive self-cmuncipn-ted slaves, and to get important informa tion fiom them? Another step toward negro equality ! Hut fear has become tcr ror, now that Congress has clothed the f Government with authority to employ the African population in all our armies. Its leader of Monday has as many reasons against this common-senso procedure as 'there arc caterpillars on a neglected spring .npplu-lroc. '" Now, for our part, wo have not the least leur that wo shall be put down by a , negro. At uny lute, we intend to make such good use of our opportunities, that, if u negro overtakes us tn u race, it snail bo Jty such splendid running as shall justify hi ptcccdencc. Hut every man must he ,left to judge for himself. If the Journal of Commerce own, uiou a careful estimate of their capabilities, are sutislied that they cannot hold their own in 11 fair race with i "the negro, wo do not blamo them for dreading a defeat ; but is it wise to let ull . tlio world know it? ' Hut. really, '? thero any real danger? We think not. The gentlemen of the Journal have inherited a very poor stock in politics, undoubtedly. Hut otherwise t they are estimable nud skillful. They lure many advantages over the African, which, by a judicious husbamlinir, will keen , theiu creditably aliead. They are in the 1ii Ht place while, and in an honest way, too. Home negroes arc white Hut they come by it improperly. They are obliged to say, with the chief captain, ' with it meal sum-obtained I this w'nltncu;" while our friends with Puul can say, "Hut I was tfA'iV born." Then, too, they have had n good educa tion r they have an honorable profession an unquestioned position in society. They liuve many prejudices in their favor, many ciHtoms and some laws. Indeed, with any tilling like diligence in thu uo of mcaiw, we think the editors of the Journal of Com merce will come out ahead of thu negrois. Hut, should the dire fear be prophetic, who 14 at (unit, anil what can we do to help thi'ii:-? Holh our disposition ami public prolcsiou oblige m to aid I lie weaker side in all- great strife for preeminence. I J itlt crto uc have been considerate for tho Af ii.t:i. A child of heulhniii-un; under the yoke, of bondage ; uncouth in personal ap weuriinco ; excluded from civil law, and pent up within u slave code, which, by thu frank nxpriBsion of its juridical ox .pounders, seeks only thu master's interest; shut out from nil ordinary industrial pur iiuits when set free, by u prejudice, as im penetrable as n buck-thorn hedge ; the butt of ridicule; and shut down by Haughty public sentiment to the condition of mi inferior race we have hitherto sup-pHcd-thut benevolence should havesympu thy with thu negro us tho most helpless, iiglcctcd, ur.d abused of thu human fam ily. Rut it Fcems wo arc mistaken. They nre mighty men. They threaten to out run white folks, or at least to rise up to an equality with them. Day after day there is u dreadful halluneiution, full of specters ; not of rat hcrclrittj there I rats every where! not, us some other instances, ppi de'is, and worms, and bullous (aces peering out litre and glaring forth there ! It is the negro that haunts the tklirmn tiemeni of patriotism- in our neighbor's case. They wake up. of nights shrieking negroc, ne groes I Tlicy nre seized ut mid-day, and alarm the neighbors with their outcries of negroes, negroes ! Wherever they en, tlieyiiie liable to these sad Ills. It is nroh- ublu they see negroes in trees, and stones, and running brooks. The earth and air are full of negroes, and all this ubiquitous nibe seems rushing after tho editors of the Journal of Commerce I In the Apocalypse, among Hip Eccr's vis ions was one of "a pale liorie: and his name that fiat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him." If the editors of tho Journal of Commerce were to write a com mentary, they would, no doubt, prove that this vision meant the uprising of the negro ini'e, riding down while folks, "and hell ,ollowiug." Hut wi hnve not pot this raco on foot, o we do not see how wo can Mop it. It s the Journal of Commerce folks that nre lclci mined to run n nice with the African. .We can only be spectators and S'c fair play between them. A fair Held, then (trip and at it, gentlemen all. Let the "thing be 6c tiled. Wo shall tuke neither fide; not with tln?c who cry On it Jour nul," nor with those who i-hnut, " Oo it ne grn." We stand calmly impartial, dctcn inii(d to put the wreath upon the head of the victor, whether it fulls on silk or wool. euccKsson to J. A.
