The correspondent of the NVY. 7V6- tinr, writkig from Cairo a discriptlon of the recent battle at uorinth, Mississippi, says of tho hostile doings, on Saturday, Oct. 4th : Tho morning wore on, and for a time there were no demonstrations on the part of tho enemy they remained altogether quiet in the angle of the woods near the railroad. Presently two lines wcreJormed, one at right angles to tho other ihc one destined with its rcscrvo to sweep over the railroad, through tho nbattis into llie vil lagethe other with its reserve to attack Battery Robinett, which wns tlio key to the whole position. It oneo taken ami fheld nnd Corinth wns undeniably in reb el poscssion. The line destined for the occupation of the village came rnppidly forward at a charge across the ruilroafl, over the fallen timber, driving the Union line before them like chaff. All that grape and canister could do to impedo their pro gress was attempted, but still their irresist able progress was not stuyed. Butteries of light urtillery pluycd upon their front and left incessantly ; their colors were thrice shot awoy; but tliey-cnmo still on ward, nor halted until they reached the publio square, and formed in lino of battle directly opposite Gen. Halleck's old head quarters. Our line of battle was formed directly opposite, in the street leading past Rosekrans' headquarters. Tho two armies advanced nnd engaged in a terrible hand-to-hand conflict, nnd for a time the destruction of the Union army seemed inevitable. Our nrniy gradually yielded and fell back until the enemy had nearly reached the Corinth House. 'Here Gen. Rosekrans rode along the line, und in a few cheering words revived tho drooping courage of the wearied soldiers. The ene my's reserve wus at this 'time directly in range of the guns on the redoubts to tbe left, and huge shells begun to drop into thqir midst, whoso explosion in the solid masses began to create considerable confu sion and loss of life. At the same 4Ure the order was given to "charge bayonets'." At this command oar brave foldieri sprang to their work with a wilL fl'bev at- hacked vigorously, and soon theepemy was nying across ne puoiio rqiure-ir. wild confusion. The explosion of tierytuissiles from tie two batteries added baste to their movements, and by the -time 'tbey reached the cover of tho timber 'their retreat be come a mat. By tlio 'time ,ihis lino was driven back the other Jlino with their re serves were well advanced in the direction ofiBattcry Robinett. During the period of seeming inaction, when the enemy hod withdrawn to .the cover of tho 'timber, while preparing ito makeiUie'twQicbnrgfs M recorded in tho preceding 'narrative, Gen. Price and 'hjs principal 6fUcers held a. consultation 'to de vise waysnd means ta tab the ibntterv. The imicrtonce pf, Jts ,ppptor was admit ted, OBC'toe risk and dimjer of the attempt thoroughly canvassed. Gen. Price would not undertake the responsibility of ordering the attack, but called for volunteers. C 1. Rogers of Arkansas immediately tendeied his brigade as thu forlon hope, and Col. Ross his brigade as a support. They massed their troops eight deep, and ndvanc under a heavy fire of double charges of grape and canister. A terrible enfilading and flanking fire was poured upon them from every battery bearing in that direc tion, aided by incessant volleys of musket ry from the supports of tbe batteries, and the Union regiments drawn up In line Sarallel with them. The first shell from lattery William exploded in tbe centre or the advancing column, sending tairty or forty to their long home. Every discbarge caused huge, gaps in their ranks. An eye witness of that wonderful charge sajrs'he can coaipare the elect of our fire to noth ing but the falling of grain before "the scythe, litis tremendous mortality did not effect their irrcsistable onward march. As sooa s one man fell, Lis comrade stepped forward in bis place. I doubt . whether history has ever recorded a charge characterised by such determined vutor and bravery. Twice did they approach almost to the oater works of the battery, and twice were they compelled to (all back. The third time they reached the battery, and planted tber Aug on the edge. It was shot down, raised again, and again shot down. They swarmed about the bat tery, they climed over the parapets : they fired through the escarpments, and for a lime it seemed as if tbey bad secured the victory their valor bad so richly earned. When they obtained the battery, our meB who were working it fell back behind the projecting earthworks, out of reach from onr shells, and immediately all the batter ies bearing upon the position were turned upon Battery Robinett, and on a shower -of missiles were falling like hail upon the bravo intruders. No morfnl man could stand the fire, and they retreated. 8lowly the brave remnant turned their unwilling steps towards the forest from which they slarted, when the order was given to the two regiments supporting the battery to charge. This order was splendidly exe cuted. The (miserable remnant .of troops whom (the batteries had nearly destroyed was now almost annihilated. A few scat tering troops were all that remained of the column that so valliantly attacked the bat tery scarcely an hour before. Tho dead bodies of rebels were piled up in and about the intrenchincnts, in some places eight and ten deep. Iu -one plnco directly in front of tho point of assault, 210 dead 'bodies found with'm a space of 100 feet, among them the camnmuders of both brig ades making tbe assault Col. Rogcro und Rnsf. This wns the termination of the engage ment. The enemy withdrew to the timber, and shortly beat a retreat in tbe direction of Chcvalla. Sanitary Fund AmountRbmitted. Tho following is k succinct statement of the amount raised in this county, by the different precinct agents, for the relief of the sick and wounded soldiers, and by them paid into C. C.
