THE OREGON SENTMEL.
SATUKDAY,
OCT. ID. 1801,
J. O. Dim Stiu. MtsxiMJ. On Urn 3d
Inst., Mr. J. U. Dies, of Ousuurp, and Mr.
Jm. Kimball, of Dead Indian prairie, Marled
from (he liottfc of the latter In search of tliclr
horses. They caugtit one of the horses, which
Mr. Klmbnll mounted, giving Ills rifle to Mr.
Dies, with ttii! understanding of separating
nnd circling the hill. Since thus separating,
Mr. Die tins not been seen. About n down
of men have ever since been In search of Mm.
On the Cth, they struck his trail, which they
followed about twelve miles, when the trail
was lost. The search was continued without
further traces of htm, until Monday last, when
his tracVs were again discovered, accompanied
thy those of on Indian and horse, and were fol
lowed two and one-half miles Into tho moun
tains, between the road nnd Hyatt pal
tie, where all Irao- of hint were again lost.
It Is dared that he has been murdered by the
Indians. JIo had in his possession two rifles,
navy revolver, and a plain gold hunting
watch, valard at 8100. A party Intend start
ing from Oniburg this morning, In company
with Cupt. Lindsay Applegate, to further
prosecute the search, and Interrogate tho In
dians. HrTi'nMGD. Dr. L. S. Thompson Is again
with us, after a years absence tn the Atlantic
States, returning across tho plains In tho ca
pacity of .Surgeon to Capt. Maynadicr's Im
migrant escort of eighty men. He reports as
hiving had a very pleasant trip, bat were an
noyed somewhat by Indians on llrush Creek,
nt which (Mint they lost few animals by
them. Notwithstanding many objects ol the
exhibition were thwarted by unforsecn circum
stances, ho feels confident that tho presence
.of troops In the Indian country, saved a repe
tition of last year's tragedy.
We regret that a portion of this escort
icnutd not huvo accompanied tho Immigration
who came Into this valley and thus silenced
rtlio anxiety felt In this community for their
.safely; but the t (Torts of the Dr. and dipt.
Crawford, who had charge of the immigrant
rtraln, proved unavailing. We hope that
1i nccforlh the (Inrcrnnitnt will hud Its aid
by furnishing escorts to the ninny thousand
who arc looking toward to the I'aciflc Coast
,ps there future homes.

Hearing cinie joneion, acpicmoer tin, says :
Of one thing you may bo certain, namely,
that all the report and assertions put furlh
cither In Northern or Southern Journals,
nbont any Intention on the part ol England
to break Ihe blockade, or to recognize tha
Southern Confederacy, In order In got the
cotton crop, are sheer nonsense. The unani
mous desire, both of our people and Uovc-rn-
ment, to maintain n strict neutrality, so fur
from being diminished, Is, If possible, stronger
than ever, and nny recognition of the Con
federates, until they had established their in
dccndcnco In a manner that would put all
further ((Torts on the part of the north out of
the question, would bin utdvt really regarded as
n breach ol that neutrality. For tho national
honor, and for the sake ol commercial prece
dent, our Uovcrnmcul will doubtless be watch
ful to protest against action at variance with
International nnd marltlmo law, but so long
as Ihe Federal Government attend to these
matters, they may pursue their course, so far
us this country Is concerned, without troub
ling themselves to think even of our existence.

This tax, It will be borne In mind, goes
Into ilT.et the 1st of next January, when it
will not only bo assessed nnd collected for tin'
ensuing icar, but also for the present year.
This Is a matter of Interest to some pcntilr,

Cottox tor KcnnpR. The flovcrnment Is
now organizing, und has, perhaps, partly dis
patched several military ami naval expeditions
to the South, employing In tho nearcgutc
about one humiml unci lllty thousand men rtmi
three thousand ships of war nnd transports.
With this large force Ihe Southern cotton crop
will be seized nt the different (Idiots, when II
Is rendv fur murkct, nnd the Government will
have about 2,000,000 bales, by the 1st rf
January next, for export to Liiiland aid
France. There Is no necessity, there fore, fir
European nations to quarrel with til about
the cotton supply. Wc shall be ready to let
them have all the cotton they want by the
time they require it.
