THE OREGON SENTINEL,
SATURDAY, Arpi'ST IU,UH01,
" A Lottor from tlio Northorn Minos.
A letter received n few days ngo by Mr. S.
It. Taylor, dated at Oro Pino City, July 21st,
written by Mnrk Wntklns, formerly n success
ful miner on Jackson Creek, from which we
rc permitted to copy tlio following Items:
1 bought Into a claim on tlio ttli of July,

nd the balance when It comes out. Four of
m washed bit week nud took out nbout 830 ;
I believe wo done ns well ns nny of tlio claims
In oar vicinity. They all say they aro making
from S to ? per day, so do wc ; but you sco
all want to sell. I have soma notion of
Wing n,y claim. Wwl Ihlnks these nro the
best diggings thai he was ever In, if they had
". wll. 1 don't think bo. 1 think if Jack
ten miners had the ualtr, they would pay
thtt dollars to these on. I would ndvlsc nil
xaj friends to stay where they arc until next
Spring, as this is tt hard old place to winter.
Snow falls eight fcct, nndnsn matter of course
miners can do nothing. I shall gat out of this
wilderness thts full If not sooner. There are
some good diggings on lthodcs' creek, sny
from 85 to 825 per day ; there are some good
rbims on Canal Gulch, nud some on OroFino
Creek, eight or nine miles below Pierce City.
Oro Pino Hat that their was so much talk
about, is not worth n In my opinion.
C'UIms arc all workcJ to a disadvantage : you
hire to throw Into slulcvs from eight to twelve
ktl h'li and tall olT on your own clatin ; ovcry
iking has to bo handled twice. The way most
ef the cl.ilms arc worked : two men throw Into
the sluices, one forks the rock out, another
(brows out the gravel. These arc the (latest
crcrk ''-H I evir saw for mountain streams,
lib almost lmOs.lblc to get fall for your
sluices. Up Oro Pino Creek where 1 am nt
nork, It Is five uml six feet dicp, and is n good
ileal such u wash its the righMiaml fork of
Jackson Cr.l, only there Is more quartz, In
bet It Is most all quartz, the bedrock is quartz
ml granite.
