SATU11DAY, Juno ilOtli, 1BOO.
Q Tub Mines. With tlio news of discoveries
la quartz on Jackson creek, we liavc this week
to chronicle also, further discoveries of excel
lent placer diggings on tlio samo stream.
Thos. Parsons and others, at work up tho right
fork for a long time, last week struck a very rich
claim in Canlrcll Gulch, which leads into the
Creek, and have already obtained extravagant
prospeeU. The. new diggings nro extensive,
ml It U believed that they will provo rich as
any ever worked In tho county.
Good news has also reached tis from tho
new diggings near Siskiyou City, on upper
Applfgatc. John Slfcr's claim Is paying
handsomely, and somo others nro doing rptlto
si well. The creek rose upon tho mines last
wck, and did considerable damage to coma of
tho wing dams, but a few days labor will re
pair this.
The lower Applegato mines continue lo pay
good wages, and labor is never suspended tliero
Tor want of wntcr. Tho yield of gold is always
uniform and certain m tho week rolls by.
At Williamsburg and Whisky Gulch, tho
miners are generally receiving fair, and In some
instances, extravagant remuneration for their
labor. Maury & Davis' ditch gives a good
apply of water, and tho prospect for this
CMcntlat clement to successful mining during
the Fall, Is much better tbnn'vtas promised
last year, Inconsequence of tho heavy snons
which cap the high hills near whero the ditch
leads from (ho stream which supplies It
i i
Circuit Coumr. Tho week has been almost
exclusively devoted to criminal business, and
one or two Important eases urcyct to be tried.
Tho trial of llartwlg, for killing Win. ICohne,
wsj concluded on Thursday morning. The
Jury, after o short absence from tho Court
room, returned a verdict of not guilty. Quite
tin array of contwl appeared In lltbcfw. Thu
argument for tho defense made by J. II. ltccd,
IIkj., Is spoken of as the ablest nml most Im
pressive ever heard In this county. We much
regret missing the opportunity to hear It. The
cue of John Hoyd (Kanaka), for nau1t with
Intent to murder Samuel Lemons (colored),
resulted In a verdict of guilty of tumult.
Charles Illvas, for larceny, plead guilty.
Iticn Qi'ahtz DiscntKitr. Last week an
other discovery of a gold quart, lend was
made on the right fork of Jackson creek. The
fortunate finders of the lode nro John Woods
and Joseph llohues.both ol whom have taken
full claim. Tlio vein has been liiditslrlnusly
prospected, and rnchdiy's work upon It moio
satisfactorily proves the extent and richness of
the lock. We havo specimens taken from each
- claim, and they contain gold clearly pcrccptl-
bin over tho whole surface. I'rout n plcrv
broken off from one of there specimens, :'
ounces, Mr. Woods obtained 97 '-'" of gold,
and the rock Is no more th.in nverofe with
nil jet taken out, he a mi res us. It Is certainly
n rich lode.
Mont: Qi'.titi& - I'rvliy unhi this county
will become as distlnguMird for the vast quan
tity of gold'bcarlug quartx, as It has fur the
rhdiiieM of Its ni'ist famous quartz lode, or for
the rnro bcniity of Its natural scenery. I Ivery
week new dlicotirlcJ In mineral wealth are
made. During the w-cvlc no received n large
jwe ol gold quartz rock from Mr. l'unn, lit
.l'ji from his new lead near the cckhratid
Hindi well vein, ninl gold In flue spoilt Is dis
cernible all over It. The lode I yet but In
differently proiectcd, but enough Is known to
warrant tho litHef that It will provo one of the
richest yet discovered.
Fourth ok Jn.v. Tluro will be n celebra
tion In this town on Wednesday ne.t, In honor
of the Nation's llrtliday, iind from the prepar
ations made, It will doubtless be mi Interesting
eeuilon. Tlio inembcrs of tho Hook and
ladder Company and of the Jacksonville lira
Hand havo token tho lead In this matter, but
our citizens have nbly co-operated with them
In order that the day shall bo worthily ob
served. Tho programme nf celebration will
be found In another column.
Tiii'Mir.n, It.ti.v vm IIaii- The Intensely
hot weather of the week has brought with it
one or two short, but intent showerlugiif
rain and hall, accompanied by thunder. On
Thursday afternoon ono of thce showers burst
npon the town, and for about n quarter of an
hour, it rained and hailed with tremendous
force. Tho hall stones were of extraordinary
zc, and rattled down upon tho earth Ku shot
upon a Door.
Axotiieu DisrovKiiv. On Thursday, Mr.
J. Kallison brought us a specimen of copper
ore found by him the day before whiloout
hunting. It was a broken from elf a project
ing boulder. Holms not yet tested to what
' depth it penetrates, nor whether there Is an
titenslvo lead of it, but wIM In n few- days,
and has promised to let us know the result of
lilt researches. The piece brought Is rich.
FwtiaiiTS. During tho week a largo quan
tity of goods havo arrived to our merchants,
by wagons and pack trains. Freights are
brought from Cre.ecnt City at from four and
a half to lis cent per pound, and from Scotls
burg at four eud Ave cents. Tho roads both
ways aro in excellent condition. Duslncss is
teadily improving throughout tho county, and
hence larger freights are brought this year
than ever before.
Amusrurnt. The Potter Theatrical troupe
give an exhibition at McCully'a Theatre to
night, and a fino bill Is ottered. Tho Willnm
ctto pipers speak highly of their performances.
The pretty and fascinating Miss I.ula Sweet,
will appear In faorlte characters. Miss Karl
is also said to bo a great attraction. Itead
their bill of entertainment in this number.
They will undoubtedly draw u erowed house.
