Slilel nnd Mr. Logan, the rival candidates for Congres sional honor, addressed llio cojp!o of dasburg find of Jackionvillc on Saturday ami .Monday last. At both meetings, a large crowd assem bled, and tho room In which the speaking was licit at Gasburg fulled to accomodate nil who bad como to listen. Mr. Logon opened tlio discussion. He tlio conelu3lon of lilt remarks, Col. Shell was warmly applauded Mr. Logan's speech was similar In style, but qnlte sollko In sonllment, to tint delivered In UasbnW. It was lens Republican, more lib eral, more ndrolt nnd buncombo. 'I'ho fact Is, Mr. Logan Is a smart, canning, ready, artful campaigner, who takes Ike precaution to ascer tain what his ntidlcnco prefers to hear, nnd tells tlicm only that. Ho appeals almost en tlrely to tho passions, prejudices and humors of his hearers, and rests scarcely n point with their judgment lto makes a political speech ns ho would nn effort in a law case beforo a jury, seeking more to gain his suit by any mean., than to keep within tho bounds of true JiKtlee, for his client's sake. No would rather utter n witticism than a maxim, nnd sooner have his audience laugh than think. Hut with all his cleverness, ha occasionally tumbles Into n pit of his own digging, as he did once or twice on Monday. He started with a feint of virtuous Indignation that Col. Slilel should appeal to the Old Line Whigs for support In the present struggle, and declared himself to bo an Old Lino Whig. Ho used no argument to convlnco tho Whigs that they should not act with tho Democracy i he labored solely to nrousc old prejudices. In a little while, how ever, ho got down from his high Whig horse, and was cunningly laboring to lend It Into the Ilepublican quagmire. He admitted that he was a Republican, but denied affiliation with the Orwfcy-sTIsoti-UMdliigs school, nnd In answer to n question whether ho would voto for Howard? repondcd "I'm n Whig, nml don't answer question, I may volo for the nominee of tho Chicago Convention, and I may not. I won't voto for Seward." He said that the Republican of Oregon blnnoll, at all events, wcro In no wtsa bound to the Philadelphia Platform, because this was not a State when lint was made, and therefore Ore gon had no delegate In the Convention which adopted It! Alter spsiklng a very few min utes upon the subject of Slavery, ho dropped it as If loo hot, and with Indifferent manner remarked that, " It wai n question of very little Importance, nil) how." lie then spread him self upon tho War Debt, the Pacific Railroad, ami the Homestead bill. In his remarks con cerning the War Debt, particularly, he com muted what wc mutt sot down ns most extra ordinary blunders for n psrson of Mr. Iignn's Intelligence, or ilso as most rcckleii perversions of very recent hlitory nnd facts. If ho spoke what ho behewd, he cvluccil unpardonable The Antolopo Springs Expedition, On the 8lh of April last, n party of our citi zens, mostly from the upper end of the Valley, left on a prospecting tour for Antelope Springs, lid ring been Induced to bellevo by a man nam ed David Tng, that In that vicinity wcro to be found extensive and very rich gold qunrUs ledges nnd silver mines. Long crossed the Plalm last Fall, and had since then resided In this Valley. Until his advent here, ho had never seen any gold quarto or precious ores, nnd was entirely Ignorant of tho nppenranco of cither In their natural stale. Shortly after tho astonishing discoveries at Gold Hill nnd other places In the county, upon some speci mens ol the quartz rock being shown him, ho declared that In crossing tho Plains ho had teen quartz rock precisely similar to the pieces exhibited. Having likcwlso been shown other mineral ores, ho nsscrtcd that near tho samo point In lilt long overland journey, there were alo ores of a corresponding nature. Ho apoko so coiillilently nnd emphatically of theso facts, and with such an air of truthfulness, that final ly a parly was formed for tho purpose of visit ing the designated spot, and ascertaining really whether gold nnd silver abounded thero to the extent asserted by Long. He consented to ac company tho expedition In tho capacity of guide. Antelope Springs, about lfl miles west of tho Humboldt river, whore tho California trail crosses, was Iho point of destination. Welt furnished for their long nnd tedious tour, the company left on tho day nbora stated. Last Saturday, Mr. Oatmau, ol Oasburg, who went out with tho cxjicdltlon, returned, War Debt Facts. In his ccch of Monday, Mr. J-ogan labored to proved that unless tho pcoplo of Oregon sent him as Ilepublican Congressman to Wash ington, thero would bo slender hope for the payment of tho War Debt, and argued that, with a Ilepublican House, until Oregon did send ono of that party there, thero could bfl.no rcasonablo Iiopo for the passage of tho appro priation. If his argument Is good for anything, It is sufficient to provo that such nn event would postpono tho payment uutll after 1805 at soonest. For, if tho payment of tho Debt is to bo made a strict party measure, nnd none but Republicans can carry It, then our people must nwalt tho assembling of a Ilepublican Senate, with a Itcpubllcnn President ns well, beforo tho bill ran pa", and not sooner than 18C." If then can the Scnato bo of that complexion. Wc might with the samo pro priety say, that not until the Democracy wero In tho ascendant In tho lower House would tho , to that man for tho Presidency, who, to what Honry Clay on Party. In his speech in " Tho Grove," on Monday, David Logan, Ksq., Ilepublican candidate for Congress, get rather furious over Col. Shell's appeal to the Old Lino Whigs, In which he referred to Henry Clay's latter-day sentiments upon parties. Mr. L. declared that ho was r. Whig still-that ho was a Clay Whig. Sim ply to exhibit tho error or fallacy of this assertion, and to provo that Mr. Logan is not a Clay Whig, we quote from a speech mado in tho U. S. Senate, by Mi. Clay, in which he wlthcrlngly denounced tho odious doctrines sought to be engrafted on the Old Whig stock by Mr. Seward. Hero are Mr. Clay's very words : "Hut If It (tho Whtir parly) Is to bo mowed into n tontimptiblt Abolition parti, ami if Abo litionism II to betneralled inon tfic U'iitr erect!. fiom that moment I renounce the parly ami cents to be a Whig. I go yet a step further : ii j nm nnvc, i win givo my iiumuic support debt be paid, but wo do not with to sco this subject made n political hobby for any party, and shall ever object to Its diversion Into such n channel. Let It be paid for Its Justness not from party nor sectional policy. As Mr. Logan unJcrtook to prove that It was Democrats who havo so fur prevented tho payment of tho Debt, how ever, It Is well for us to cite a bit of Congressional history upon the matter, to cstabllih the reverse. In the Senate of tho United States, August 1ft, 1 BIG, Sen ator Wcllcr, (Dem.) of California, moved that the Secretary of War be directed to send "a commission to Oregon nnd Washington, to over nnrlv ho mar bclomr. Is not contaminated by fanaticism, rather than to ono who, crying out nil tho tlmo that ho is a Whig, maintains doctrines utterly subversive of the Constitu tion nnd tho Union." After this, can nny true-hearted Clay Whig hwltato In pursuing the course laid out by their great Captain to net with the parly devoted to tho Constitution and tho Union T Certainly, no consilient Whig can. Then tru'fi party must ho nlnllate with f for thero arc but two. Is thero any organised National parly In tho Union, s.ivo tho Democratic parly 7 None. Therefore, If they would bo guided by tho gravo and patriotic counsels of tlnlr noblest champion, the Old Lino Whigs and Sunday, tho whole parly, except Long and ascertain nnd report to htm fnr payment, nil n man named Montgomery, both of whom re-1 expenses Incurred In the suppression of Indian of Oregon cannot do otherwise than ally them malned behind In Honey Lako Valley, nrrircd ( hostilities In those Territories."
