will be used to irrigate the orchard
and farm lands i etween that city and

placer diggings,near the Wyant place,
to a point near the outlet of Ashland
Creek. These mon contemplate put
ting in a substantial d im, about 45
feet in height,from the old placer dig
gings, to the rocky bluff on the west
bank of Bear Creek.
This dam, when completed, will
mean a lake nearly two miles long
and about or e-Valf a mile wide, cover
ing the flats belonging to D. H. Jack-
son and Clarence Farnham, to a depth
of from 30 to 40 feet of water. This
amount of stored water, if used judi
ciously, will be sufficient to irrigate
many thousand acres of land in the
Rogue River Valley.

ell’s Federal raiders closed a
drawn battle with the t'onf< >1-
erates at Rocky Gap, in the
mountains of West Virginia. In these
days of realistic chronicle» Aten-Il’s
rough ride through southeastern Vir
ginia would make a sensation. It was
one of those expt'dltions which give the
troops no limit in hardship for a doubt
ful gain or no gain at all, with all tlie
risk and excitement of guerrilla rtgiit-
ing.
West Virginia, after it had been
cleared of tile Conf edera tes in 1801,
had no positions of importance to be
eonquenjd, but It was a wild, inaceess
ible country between the seat of war
in Virginia and the great west, vert
tempting as a hiding place for armed
tolumns wishing to form in secret and
sally forth without warning. It was
also the salt producing field for the

Averell’s clash with th«- enemy at
Rocky Gap was the wind up of a ride
covering nearly 1,000 miles actual
travel. The last stage of it was a ron-

in the Shenandoah valley, Aug. 5 and
crossed the Blue Ridge, led by a
slender advance guard under his aid-
de-camp, Captaiu Baron Paul von

same time General John D. Imboden, a
C'onft'derate leader reared in th«' region,
started south by roads farther west,
intending to beat Averell in the race
and join his own floree to tlie defenders
of the district Awrell was aiming to
conquer. Imboden was a mountain
and a horseback fighter. He was just
in from piloting Lt'e’s trains through
South Mountain and across the Poto
mac on his retreat fjoin Gettysburg.

Koenig captured another band, but
after a few miles’ march the guard fell

gaged in the ambush, but a dozen men

The fifth day’s march brought the
