He has been for eight years 'professoi

How to Xaiage the Pierson Fern.
To assure symmetry and graceful
proportions, the Pierson fern should be
grown on raised stands or suspended
from tbe roof of tbe greenhouse, and
the results will amply repay the grower
who alms to produce fine specimens.
This fern should not be shaded except
in the hottest midsummer days, when
a slight wash on tbe glass may be
needed to prevent burning. It is a
gross feeder and Is happiest when pot
bound and given liberal stimulant, with
cool culture, abundant light and plenty
of room. If these hints are followed,
there will be little or no tendency to
“revert to type.”—Gardening.
H*w to Hull Walawta.
Hulling walnuts as usually perform
ed is a dirty and disagreeable task, for
the juice stains the hands a deep brown
very hard to get off. There is, how
ever, a cleaner and easier way of re
moving tbe hulls, to which Mr. W. W
Ashe has called tbe editor’s attention.
It is simply to bore a hole slightly lar
ger in diameter than a bulled walnut
through a piece of maple or other hard
wood and then drive the walnut
through it This not only removes tbe
hulls, but does it quicker than any
other way with which we are acquaint
ed.—American Botanist.

Berberis thunbergil Is one of the
most useful shrubs a landscape artist
can have. In winter Its berries are at
tractive; In spring the leaves are a
bright green, and the younger ends are
usually a lighter color than tbe older
blanches. The coloring in autumn is
exquisite. It never grows high, is
well adapted for border or edging and
doe* well on terraces to edge a stair
way —Gardening.

LAOX OF WORK IN TEXTILE TRADE
MURDERED FOR REVENGE.
The artisans and workingmen of the
country are fast discovering that the
protective tariff does not protect them
from wage reductions, and in many
cases from no work at all. This seems
to be especially true in that hotbed of
protection, th* state of Pennsylvania,
for the Public Ledger- good Republic
an authority—recently announced that:
“With thousands out of employment
by an almost total stagnation In the
Industry and in the looms of a large
number of mills working on half and
three-quarters time, worsted yarn spin
ners in this city propose to combine to
cut down the operatives' wages to the
basis of those paid in New England for
similar work. This means a reduction
of 15 per cent In the cartings of 20,000
spinners.”
Besides the worsted operatives above
mentioned, it is reported that 60,000
other textile worker* are idle, t11 work-1
ing in protected industries. Worsted
yarn ls protected by a tariff duty of 30
or 40 cents a pound, according to qual
ity. and an additional duty of 40 per
cent ad valorem. This enormous pro
tection of course prevents the impor
tation of foreign yarns, except a small
amount of Saxony wool, especially pre
pared for ladies to knit with, so the
whole home market la preserved for
the wool yarn manufacturers, and the
profits are very large, there being no
competition. Yet this protection has
resulted In “an almost complete stagna
tion ot the industry,” with no work for
many of the operatives and a reduction
of wage* even to those working on half
time.
That ls the terrible condition to which
these poor, deluded disciples of pro
tection have been brought in one of the
highest protected Industries, and the
condition has existed for some time. It
must also be remembered that the cost
of living has vastly advanced under
thia protective tariff system, so that
even those workingmen who ar* fully
employsd and who have been fortunate
enough not to have their wages re
duced have all they can do to make
both ends meet.
‘ Tbe Protective Tariff league, which
is an organization of the protected
trusts and manufacturers, defines in
its constitution its object to be “to
protect American labor by a tariff on
Imports which shall adequately secure
American industrial products against
th* competition of foreign labbr.”
This Republican organization, which
control* president and congress, has
succeeded perfectly In shutting out
competition as far as woolen yarns
are concerned, but both the league and
th* Republican party, who enacted the
Dingley tariff law, have miserably
tailed “to protect American labor” tn
that Industry.
The facta are th£t In Philadelphia
and elsewhere ths markets and stores
ar* crowded with customers who have
so little to spend that they ar* obliged
to buy th* cheapest clothing and the
poorest provisions, and thia poverty
may be mostly traced to tariff monop
oly. The cheap wool clothing is nine-
tenths cotton and mercerized cotton or
Imitation wool. Hence, the worsted
spinner is out of work, for only the
well to do can buy the "all wool and
« yard wide” production. In other
protected industries similar conditions
exist. High tariff produces over-pro-
ductlpn, fosters trusts and comblna
tlona, which boom thing* for a while
end then the Inevitable breakdown
comes.
Th* workingman will have to study
the** matters—necessity msy compel
him to do so. If he does he will soon
discover that a tariff which will pro
duce enough revenue to support the
government, honestly and economically
administered, with trust productions
that are selling cheaper abroad than I
at home placed on the free list, will
reduce the cost of living and make
mors stable wages and secure employ
ment all the year around.
That ls the Democratic position, and
the greed of the protected interests
and monopolists ls proving that con
tention ls best for the American con
Sumer and of more lasting benefit to
tbe honest manufacturer. The Repub
lican cry that Democratic success
would Injure the business of tbe coun
try is but partisan rubbish, and tbe
history of tbe country shows It to be
so. Tbe universal prosperity of low
tariff periods, when other causes did
not interfere and when the government
Was honestly administered, is an un
answerable proof for a reasonable
.tariff.
