THREATEN TO CLOSE MILL8
Silk Manufacturers Complain of Dull

HOW KOT TO CUT.
A GOOD WAY TO CUT.
New York, April 21.—A general
shutdown of the silk mills in Paterson
and other parts of New Jersey and in
Pennsylvania Is threatened as a result
of the paucity of orders for the fall
trade. The manufacturers talk of clos
ing their mills next month and not re
suming operations until September
unless business revives, a contingency
which they now scarcely expect.
It is said that the conditions are
such that practically all the mills will
be obliged either to curtail production
much more than at present or shut
down entirely. Orders now on hand
are said to be barely sufficient for the
looms until the middle of May.
Most of the silk men ascribe the
dullness in trade to such causes as
the presidential election, unfavorable
weather and the reduction In deman 1

two fed above, the point of its origin
in order to prevent splitting down and
tearing off u considerable portion of
bark. After the weight of the branch
has been lessened by cutting away the
main part a second cut can lie made
and the stub held in position until the
cut is completed, thus preventing the
splitting down and tearing of the bark,
which is likely to result from the care
less removal of large branches. The
evil results of splitting can frequently
be overcome by cutting first on the un
derside of the limb and then upon the
upper side, so that the breaking of the
tissue occurs near the middle of the
wound instead of at one side. When Dolliver Declares America
