trainer, a sight setter, a rammer man,
a hoist man, a breech-lock man, and a
loader. Each hau his station, and the
seven men practically become part of
the gun, working together like a ma
chine.
When Cunningham, the Umatilla
county “sheep king,"started in to per
secute Asa B. Thomson, the La Grande
land-office receiver, he probably didn’t
know there were two sides to all ques
tions. But now he will have time to
reflect, since he will have to appear be
fore the federal grand jury next April
and answer to a charge of perjury.
Cunningham may yet learn that, even
though a man has plenty of money, he
cannot always do just as he wills. Even
a sheep “king" haB to obey the law
sometimes.
Hitchcock is Firm
In tbe course of a recent conference
with Secretary Hitchcock Senator
Fulton b ought up the topic of the
Roseburg land-office appointments,
and sought to obtain the Secretary’s
views with regard ta» James H. Booth
and J. T. Bridges, who have been rec
ommended for reappointment. The
Senat >r found the Secretary’s attitude
to be exactly as has been repeatedly
stated io these columns, viz., that
Booth, because of bis connection with
the Booth-Kelly and another c in-
pany, cannot be reappointed.
The Secretary explained that he was
not displeased with Booth’s record as
an official, but he deemed it inexpedi
ent to appoint to that < ffic i a man
having such business connections as
Booth admits holding. He added
that there was no opposition to the
reappointment of Bridges, but inti
mated that Bridges’ name would not
go to tbe Senate until some man had
been selected to succeed Booth.
The Senators have never seriously
considered the selection of a successor
to Bjoth, as they have believed that
he would be reappointed, or present
conditions would be continued and
no change would be forced.
There is an intimation that the
matter may be compromised, either
by Booth withdrawlng and releasing
the delcjati in from further embar-
rassm-nt, or by inducing Broth to
withdraw and giving him a place
equally as good. But at this point
