A C hicago minister makes the suggestion for a church trust. He be lieves it will be a good plan to have the Standard Oil Baptists buy out the other denominations. He thinks that 510,000,000could be used to pur chase all the colleges of the vaii u- deuuiuiuations, and combine them, at the same time combining the church es themselves. “A preacher in one of these churches would have soto pres tige then,” says the suggester of the movement, ‘‘for he would lie able to present a card like this: ‘The National Christian Church of the Standard Oil Company, pre-ented by the Rev. John Smith, of Church No. 3,162.” T he Legislature has passed Senator Booth’s bill to protect timber land and forests from fires. It creates a board of tire commissioners cf five members—L. J. Simpson, R. A. Booth, S. Benson, IL A. Emmltt and C. W. Nibley. Each is to represent a specified district. Th is commission is to ‘‘have control and charge of all matters pertaining to the protection of forests and timber. It is to name at least one tire warden In each coun ty, who in turn are toappoint rang ers, subject to tlie approval of the commission. These rangers are to lie appointed at the request of timber interests and to tie paid by these in- t»iests. The raneers are io have po lice powers to enforce the act. BLIZZARD RAGING IN THE EAST MAN FROZEN TO DEATH CHICAGO. IN Chicago, Feb. 16.—Seven Inches of snow on the level, accompanied by a gale reachng a velocity of more than 40 miles an hour ushered in a cold wave which sent the mercury close to the zero mark. The traction and steam railway service, telegraph and telephones wires are suffering from the heavy fall of snow. Loss of life was less than antic! r&ted, only one person so far as known having succumbed. An uni dentifled man was frozen to death in a snow drift down town. Trains due from the west and south west are more or less delayed. Train service between Chicago and Omaha has been most seriously affected. The overland limited on the Chicago and Northwestern, due Sunday morning at 9 o’clock, did not arrive until Mon day night. Bucklin, Kan., Feb. 16.—Several trains are snow bound in this vicinity. The west bound Golden State limited on the Chicago and Rock Island road and two freight trains are in drifts between here and Hutchinson, and the east bound limited is also stalled somewhere near here. West Superior, Wis„ Feb. 16.—This is the coldest day of the winter. The mercury recorded 22 below zero at 7 o'clock in the morning. Rawlins, Wyo., Feb. 16.—The loss of sheep on tiie Red desert, whiire 500,000 graze, will be heavy as the re sult of the intense cold. The weather is now moderating, but the continua tion of the storm for six or seven days has weakened the sheep until deaths are of hourly occurrence. The weather is the coldest which has been experienced for many years. At Medicine Bow, in the center of the vast sheep-grazing country, the tem perature registered from 28 to 32 de grees below zero for four nights. In the Encampment country it has fallen to 40 below, and all mining operations have ceased. The fall of snow- in the mountains averages from 20 to 60 feet and many small mining camps will be snowbound for weeks. In spite of the storm the Union Pa cific, by extraordinary efforts, has kept its line clear, although all pas senger trains are running behind time. A score of snow plows are working day and night from Cheyenne to Og den. Memphis. Feb. 16.—One of the worst storms in years set In Sunday morn ing. Trains are from five to ten hours late. 8treet car traffic is prac- tcally at a standstill and telegraph and telephone companies are seriously handicapped. RAILWAY PKfcSivtrvT BAEK SUFFERS A COLLAPSE. Philadelphia. Feb. 16.—An act on the part of George F. Baer, president of the Reading Railway company, which was held by many to be dis courteous to the miners’ counsel in the strike hearing, was explained by the news that, for the last three days, he had been ill in Atlantic City. Im mediately after fiuishing his address before the commission on Thursday aCnoon he left the room in the Federal building in which the hearing was held, and. though his chief opponent, Clarence S. Darrow, began his address in the afternoon, he did not appear. It has developed that Mr. Baer went to Atlantic City in a state of physical collapse. His address before tne strike commission was more or less of an impassioned nature, and it wore greatly on his nenes. Had he’ been in good health when he began so great an effort, the exertion doubtless would have affected him. Inasmuch as he fought off an attack of the grip in order to speak, the strain caused a breakdown. Three days in Atlantic City enabled Mr. Baer to throw off the ill effects of both grip and the nervous strain. He returned to his home. No. 1718 Spruce street, and though he had not fully regained his strength he was much improved and will be at his office in the Reading Terminal today. MISSIONARIES OBJECT TO SHIPMENT OF IDOLS. Philadelphia, Feb. 16.—Missionar ies and ministers in this c(ty are. it is said, annoyed over the announced contract entered into by a Philadel phia firm to ship Buddhist idols to Corea. They denounce the plans as an outrage against religion and de cency. Mrs. W. H. R. Corliss, a returned missionary from China, said she was appalled at the idea that people In a Christian country would consent to manufacture idols for poor, unenlight ened heathens to worship. The Rev. Frederick Pool, also a re turned missionary, said the affair showed the spirit of commercialism of the age, and tended to put money making above religious decency. Bishop C. D. Foss of the Methodist Episcopal church said he did not think it as bad as the British sending opium to India or the United States Bending beer and whisky to the Phil ippines or other colonial possessions.
