equipped to receive applications un
der tho timber and stone, also home
stead laws. Final proofs taken, and

Burleigh’s bill providing^for the main
tenance of a state bureau of informa
tion at Portland and tho levying of a
state tax for tho samo was defeated.
This is one of the Legislature’s many
mistakes, for tho measure was a meri
torious one and would have benefited
the whole stale much, especially South
ern Oregon.
J. H. Drake of Pooh Bah was in
Medford Tuesday. He informs us that
an agent of tho government has been
over the route of the rural delivery that
will soon be established in that sestion,
for the purpose of furnishing the
patrons thereof with tho required mail
boxes. Tho price asked is from $2.50
to $3.50 each.

On Friday night Jacksonville Fire
Co. will give a grand ball for the bene
fit of those children who lost their
books in the fire that destroyed the
school house and are unable to huy
others. Extensive preparations have
been made for the event, which will lie
a success in every way. Everybody
should patronize so worthy an object.

dreth, Jr., of Ashland, representing the
Southern Oregon Base Ball League,
went to Grant’s Pass a few evenings
ago. to confer with the lovers of the
national game of that city and complete
arrangements for the coming season.
Nothing definite was accomplished, al
though the prospects are favorable.
In no other way than by the establish
ment of a circuit can a series of inter
esting games be secured for t his section.
Senator Mulkey has introduced a lo
cal option bill in the state senate. 11 pro.
vides that the legal voters of any in
corporated city or town shall have the
authority to vote upon and determine
for themselves the question as to
whether licenses for the sale of intoxi
cating liquors shall be granted by the
council. A vote upon the question may
be called by filing with the recorder a
petition signed by ten or more legal
voters not less than 15 days before any
general election of such municipality.
It is not likely that the bill will pass.
A. M. Helms attended the meeting
of the Red Men's tribe at Jacksonville
Saturday night. He started for home
soon afterward, and when he reached
the east end of the school yard he was
accosted by a stranger, who said he

quested the loan of a dollar from Al.,
and on being refused proceeded to as
sault him. Ho met with such stout re
sistance that he drew a razor or knife,
and struck Mr. Helms with it several
times, but fortunately with little effect,
disappearing in the darkness when
he discovered that his game had been
foiled.
“I have used Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy for a number of years and
have no hesitancy in saying that it is
the best remedy for coughs, croup and
colds I have ever used in my family. I
have not words to express my confi
dence in this remedy.—Mrs. J. A.

W. F. Arant, superintendent of the
Crater Lake reservation, has gone to
Salem to discuss with the members of
tue Legislature the matter of an ap
propriation for the improvement of
the roads to that park. The Town
Talks says that ho does not go to Salem
to ask an appropriation. The sugges
tion has come from elsewhere; but he
will give the members such informa
tion as they desire, and believes it would
be good policy for the state to further
the accommodation of travel to the
lake. The government will take care
of the roads inside the park. The ap
propriation for that purpose is limited,
but Mr. Arant can accomplish quite a
good deal nevertheless.
