I a t tn r e 4 JACKSONVILLE, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1903. VOL. XXXIII. HEROIC DARING liovernmerit Life-Saving Crew Receive Gold Medals. From the thirty-first day of October to the eleventh <biy of November, 1883, the cr> vv of the U. 3. life-saving station at Cleveland, Ohio, saved twenty-seven uivu and two women from vessels thrown tsbura by the atorma that lashed the Vaters of Lake Erie. To each of the I lue men in the crew the government I >ld medal “ for heroic daring ” was awarded. One of the crew was Ch,as. L. Learned. While attempting to get a liuo to a dis tressed vess«-l, the life-boat capsized and, when the Umt rolled over, he was caught beneath it. Finally he was washed out by tlie waves and drifted ashore where helping hands revived him. The other members of the life crew made their way to the shore and hurried for the beach ap- pamtn«. In about one hour and a half they returned and Learned had so far recover' d that he made his way to the a lie of tlie wns'k and took his place *.Ci the trew. All hands were saved, bat Learned’« career as a life-saver was end'd. 1.1 relating the story, he said taat rheumatism quickly set in as a re sult of I ho eold and exposure. This was complicated with neuralgia. “I had such ]Kiin i i:i ujy back that I could hardly move,” lie says, “and the least excite ment would canse my heart to beat viob nt!;,'. I had to be very careful of my diet and suffered much distress after eating. I could not sleep, my head ached, I wus all run-down and dis couraged. Having been disabled in the government service, I received something over six hundnd dollars in addition to my gold medal.” Mr. Learned is now a prosperous far mer at Sandy Creek, N.Y., and the story of his restoration to activity is best told as he tells it. “About four years ago,” he says, •* I saw Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills mentioned in a newspaper. I tried them and firmly believe that if I had not I should be in my grave now. The pills began to help me in less than a week. Not only did they benefit my rheuma tism, but they built up my strength, so that I was soon able to do a bigger day’s work that in years before. The insom nia disappeared and sleep was sound aud refreshing.” Dr. Williams* Pink Pills for Pale People may be had < >f all druggists or direct from tbe Dr. Williams Medicine Co., Schenec tady, N. Y., six 50-cent boxes for two dollars and a half, postpaid, on receipt of price. MARRIED. J ohnson —H ackett —At Salem. Jan. 20, 1903, H. H. Johnson and Mbs Ei hel Hackett cf Grant’s Pass, by Rev. J. AU Stuffed Up That’s the condition of many sufferers from catarrh, especially in the morning. Great difficulty is experienced in clear ing the head and throat. No wonder catarrh causes headache, impairs the taste, smell and hearing, pollutes the breath, deranges the stom ach and affects the appetite. To cure catarrh, treatment must be constitutional—alterative and tonic. •*1 was afflicted with catarrh. I took medicines of different kinds, giving each a fair trial: but gradually grew worse until I could hardly bear, taste or smell. I then concluded to try Hood’s Harsaparilla, and after taking flve bottles I was cured and have not ha<T any return of the disease aince.” K nees Fogies, Lelxnon, Kan.
