have not had any extremely low tem­
perature during the Spring to injure
fruit of any kind. The bloom on all
vurletles wax profuse; but on fertiliza­
tion it will lie noted that the apple and

fertilized and
set a large crop.
During the time the peach, almond,
cherry and prune were in bloom the
weather was warm, dry and pleanant,
the honey bee was active and these
varieties were properly fertilized. As
the apple and i>ear began blooming
the weather became cold and wet, and
continued so during the blooming
period; honey bees were not active,
hence pollen was not distributed
sufficiently to fertilize them, which, in.
uiy opinion, accounts for the small crop.
Orchard men have sprayed much more
this year than usual. At present date

to a Charge ot Giving False
Testimony.

sail,une uf the beat-known timber land
promoters on tills coast, was today
held by Justice of the Peace 11. W.
Rideout to ahswer to the Superior
Court on a charge of perjury. The
preliminary examination had lasted
the greater part of a week.
The charge grew out of tbe civil
action of B. F. Durphy vs. C. E.
Pearsall, tried recently before Judge
Wilson. It was sought to Bet aside
an agreement made by Durpby on the
ground of duress. It is alleged that
in this action, which went against
Pearsall, he swore falsely in that he
said on the stand that be did not give
J. N. Gillett, his attorney, the
marriage certificate of B. F. Durphy
and Margaret Ryan, which was used
to convict Durphy in the Oregon
courts of polygamy.
Pearsall is believed to be wealthy
He has made about >200,000 during
tbe last year, which he lias given to
his wife. His judgment creditors
have endeavored to reach this fund
on supplementary proceeding“, but
without success. Pearsall has been
sued oftener than any other man in
Humboldt county. He has three
civil suits pending, and lias Just con­
cluded three others, all having been
decided against him.
