A FRIGHTFUL RECORD.
Death-dealing forces
have
made a frightful record this
month. Ex plosions,earthquakes,
waterspouts, tornadoes, wars,
etc., have mercilessly sacrificed
thousands of lives.
First and
foremost was the earthquakes in
the French and British West
Indies.which destroyed over 50,-
000 people. Several hundred
souls perished in the explosion of
the steamer near Cairo, on the
Ohio river, recently. The explo
sion of cars of petroleum, near
Pittsburg the other day killed
several hundred. A Texas cyclone
whirled through Goliad Sunday,
killing nearly a hundred persons
and wrecking the town.
A
Minnesota waterspout drowned
several persons in Preston Sun
day night and destroyed consid
erable property. Near Knox
ville. Tenn., a coal mine explo
sion killed three hundred miners
Monday morning. A gasoline
tank exploded in a furniture fac
tory ir Pittsburg, killing two
and injuring several men: A
hurricane raged the forepart of
the week in India, killing many
jK-ople and destroying valuable
projierty. Most of these casual
ties are recorded on the front
page of one of our exchanges.
. Sprinkled among the other tele
graphic news is an account of a
' fatal storm in Dakota, an earth
quake shock in San Francisco,at
tempted assassination in Russia,
a whole family murdered bv a
jealous lover in Florida, two
New York ferries meeting in acol-
lision, and some minor events of
the same order.
When we add to these horrors
other incidents of the month—
strikes, murders, suicides, acci
dents and many other events
the reader will readily recall, we
have an alarming list, one that
makes us pause and think, if of
nothing else, at least of the fact
that we are far removed from
these death-dealing, destructive
forces, and have that much, any
way, for which to lie thankful.
No Loss of
Time.
