Sutton, prior to their departure for Northern Cali- fernia, sold tbelr quartz mines—the Roaring Gimlet, the 92 and the Ida— to Wm. Mendenhall of Richmond, Ind., who represents Wm. Baisley of Trustee, Ind. The price given in the deed is 16000. They formerly ex tracted several thousand dollars from tbe first-named ledge. W. H. Maultby and Ansel Gilson, who are working some new placer mines in Sterlingvllle precinct, think they have struck the old boulder channel that always pays to well. They have run a drift 180 feet long and found good pay dirt. It la coarse, some of the pieces weighing as high as 84 and $5 each. Tbe department of mining engi neering at tbe 0. of O. bas recent ly expended *800 for an assaying out fit, consisting of a Union Iron Works rock crusher aud a grinder, driven by a two-horse power electric meter, for preparing assay samples. Besides these a number of band crushers and pulverizers, for the same purpose. The furnaces, which have a capacity of about 200 complete assays per day, or 12 fusions every 20 minutes, are all operated by gasoline from two central tanks, with a capacity of about 15 gallons each. Tbe department also possesses three first-class assay bal ances, one of which will easily show as little as five tenths worth of gold to tbe ton of ore. The ass ty department is designed wholly for the purposes of instruction, and commercial work Is not undertaken: but problems in assaying aod metallurgy that are too difficult for the ordinary practicing assayer are sometimes welcome, in order to demonstrate the advan tage of tbe scientific way of doing things, says the Guard. J as . W. B rown , who for quite a number of weeks war on trial at Al turas, Modoc county, Calif., charged with participation in the lynching of four men and a boy at Lookout, ended in the acquittal of the defendant, al though he was clearly guilty. It was probably the most sensational, ridicu lous aid remarkable trial that has been held on tbe Pacific coast in many years. It seems unlikely that the many other persons who have been indicted for tbe same crime will be tried, as it would be impossible to get a Jury In Modoc county; and the laws of California do not provide for a change of venue on the part of the prosecution. The expense of Brown’s trial was as large as tbe conduct of his attorney- and Judge Harrington was silly and outrageous. T he conference of the two houses of congress on the Philippine tariff bill reached agreement after one sitting, the representatives of the House ac cepting al) but one of tbe material amendments made by the Senate. The House con ferees also refused to accept the pro viso connected with the Senate limit ing the operation of tbe sedition laws DAVIDSON NEWS. of tbe Philippines, leaving that pro vision to declare simply that “no per Ben Thurston, tbe miner, was here son in the Philippine islands shall, under the authority of tbe United this week, examining tbe Tip-Top. It should be either readily and coorteoualy ac cepted or promptly and courteously de clined. Nothing is more trying to the pa tience of tbe hostess and to the temper of the cook than a belated dinner guest. Perhaps no invitation once accepted should be more strictly kept than this one to dine. A guest should be at the hostess' house five minutes before the hour appointed, and. to use another’» expression, "Nothing but death should hinder.” V>’e should go to any function resolv ed to be entertaining and easily enter tained. An appreciative, responsive, animated guest lifts part of the re sponsibility from a hostess.
